You could also use a clamp light with aluminum reflector to accomplish the same thing. They are much lighter weight than a ceramic pot and serve the same basic purpose. I have 2 of them in different sizes. They sell for about $7 at most any hardware store. Just remove the clamp (unscrew the wing nut) and drill a couple of holes in the aluminum reflector to attach hooks to hang on the feeder. I use small S hooks. It works great. I had to go to a 25 watt incandescent bulb to keep feeder from overheating. There are a few videos on it.

I don''t know but you might want a smaller bulb as I just watched a Hummingbird expert who claimed you wanted to keep the nectar just above freezing but not too warm as the birds were susceptible to being 'shocked' by too warm nectar as they were used to the cold environment. Not sure how true that is but wouldn't want to harm the little guys. Also keep that feeder under shelter as you have open contacts on the lamp base which won't do well in the wet (you be careful when handling it also as it can give you a lethal shock especially if you don't have it on a GFCI circuit). Personally I used a landscape light (kind you can stick in the ground or mount with a hole to whatever) and a small 50 watt (I couldn't find smaller but I think a 25 would be ideal) PAR bulb wired to my horizontal feeder stand so that it is aimed right at my glass hanging feeder. I can slide it back if it gets too warm and closer when it get colder. The PAR bulbs are outdoor rated spotlights to they shine the heat right on the feeder. I am in Alaska (Southeast) and have had a Rufus male here all winter. We were down to nine degrees Fahrenheit for a few days at night and in the low teens during the day. Worked great. I brought it in during the dark hours and put it out at daybreak with the light on it. All my feeders are of the hanging glass tube style so I didn't want to scrap them. This works great and I can take the feeder down without disturbing the light arrangement. Take care. Doug

We tape disposable hand warmers onto the feeders. Amazon has the Super Warmer Hot Hands for a good price. They get really hot & work overnight in our unusual cold snap. We don’t often get freezing weather but today our fountains are frozen. We also put a bright light on the feeders so the little guys can feed at night if needed. The large pocket warmers are great to keep my pulled muscle feeling good too but they can’t go directly on me cause they leave red marks & they could burn.

If you’re looking for a smaller bulb for less heat, try the 25 watt appliance bulb, found in ovens and fridges.

Thank you dear for sharing your creative idea with the world. Might I suggest a lower wattage bulb as it won't take many watts to prevent freezing. I hope your hummers stay happy and well fed.

Thank you for your feedback and yes you are correct. When it is really freezing during the night the nectar stayed fairly warm but during warmer days it over heated. Have a new video coming up in the next few days. Much easier and better way. Take care 🦋

Would be nice to have suggestions that don’t involve electricity. Not all apartment buildings with balconies have outlets.
