GCSEs (general certificates of secondary education) are exams we take at the end of year 11, the grades are U-9, a 4 or above is a passing grade! Charlie is in year 10 so that’s why he wasn’t in study hall :)

Technically we met Charlie’s mom in season one when she interrupted Nick explaining himself at the door after running to Charlie’s house in the rain. But it was a very short scene with only a couple of lines from her, and most people don’t remember it so that’s fine. 😄

It's a great episode in showing off something about the lgbt experience that is kinda obvious when you think about it but I hadn't really considered until I 'came out' to some of my friends and family, which is that coming out is not just something you do once or twice and then it's done. You have to keep doing it over and over and over. And eventually it becomes less frequent, but it never really goes away. Coming out is a lifelong thing you just have to learn to do again and again

Coming out is complicated and exhausting and fraught with anxiety. I am 44, and the first time I came out to someone I was 16. Since then it’s been family, high school friends, college friends, roommates, work friends, work acquaintances, club friends and potential romantic partners. Every time you move, there’s a new set of people who assume you’re straight. A long time ago I stopped feeling like everyone in my life needed to know, and as a cis person who is perpetually single, it really doesn’t come up that much. Of course, that’s harder if you read as queer outwardly from your dress, mannerisms, and appearance. Then people are less likely to assume you’re straight and demand you give them answers so they can make sense of your nonconformity, which is intrusive. For me, the biggest thing is just navigating the process of telling personal anecdotes so that I don’t accidentally out myself to a bunch of people while telling a random story of going to a restaurant on a date and then having the point of the story being totally lost in answering the follow up questions about “wait, what? You said date, but you didn’t use the pronoun we expected, so explain that to everyone in detail!” Nowadays I don’t actually label myself to anyone new, but I do wear LGBT apparel to signal to people that they need to watch their words around me if they are naturally alphabet-phobic. I also do it to signal to people who are in the closet that I’m a safe person to confide in and to let the world know that I because I don’t meet any of the stereotypes for people who are LGBT+, then they should check their assumptions.

GSCE are kind of like SATs only the take them more around the time we take PSATs and they seem to be more intensive. They take a lot of notes and they have them in individual subjects compared to our one day SATs consisting of language and math fill in the multiple choice circles (although I know that they've added and essay portion to the SATs since I took them in '85. After GSCEs they do either A or O levels depending on their educational track. At least I'm fairly certain that's how it works. O levels are for less academically minded I think? I might also be talking out my ass. I'm not sure, but I think school might be harder in the UK.

GCSEs replaced O Levels when they were abolished ages ago. They are exams that you take by subject, in subjects you are good enough at - usually in the year you turn 16. So Nick is taking them but Charlie, Tao etc are not.

@@tgibson-hv4evAlice is aroace and has written an insanely popular and engaging story with romance at its center. Alice also admits to reading fanfics and indulging in shipping characters from other franchises. I have researched a bit about asexuals and aromatic asexuals in particular, and there seem to be three takeaways: 1) Sexual attraction and libido are not linked 2) Asexual people can have vivid fantasies, but they do not have the desire experience them in real life, and often imagine these fantasies playing out through other people, like fictional characters. They’re happy thinking about that stuff, just not about doing it themselves. And they can be happy for their friends who do experience that. 3) Sexuality is super-complicated, and asexuality and aromanticism can have many shades. Not that many people are genuinely repulsed, and so they may not feel personally lit up by engaging in sex or relationships, they can still do it, anyway. In conclusion, it takes a bit to come to terms with asexuality and aromaticism, and it’s really best if you take what people who identify that way say at face value. If they say things that seem contradictory or difficult to reconcile, just try to expand your understanding or let it be (unless they’re happy to explain in detail, which many are not). I’ll leave you with a very imperfect and poorly thought-out metaphor. I think dolphins are cool, and it brings me joy to know they exist. My sister had an opportunity to swim with dolphins when she was 16, and I was very happy for her and intensely curious about what it was like. However, as I grew older, I figured out that I don’t actually want to swim with dolphins myself. I can understand why people want to do that, I can be happy for them, and I can live vicariously through their enthusiasm. In the meantime, I’ll be living my best life on the boat, fully dressed, taking pictures and eating cake.

The no sex thing is most parents of younger teenagers. Religion doesn't come into it. I'm a parent and I didn't let my son's girlfriends sleepover until he was 18. You want your kids to be safe, emotionally and physically. My parents definitely didn't let me hang out with my boyfriend in the bedroom with the door shut. It's pretty typical of most parents.

Why would you tell people about your sex life immediately upon meeting them? So awkward. I wish it was just normal. Someone introduces you to their partner, and it's no big deal if the partners are same sex.

GCSE = General Certificate of Secondary Education = kinda equivalent to High School Diploma. Not to sound insulting, but it would be a bit refreshing for you to trim down the slight undertones of condescending comments. We must remember these are teens. And it has been over a year since season 1, don't you think the "Imogen technologies" gag is a bit old now? You wanna get s small sense of what it is like to have to "come out" is like? For a moment try to imagine that the entire world is gay, and that ONLY a 20% amount of the population is straight like you are...and for the REST OF YOUR LIFE you have to inform everyone that you are straight...every time you start a new school, or a new job, or move to a new home or neighborhood. And that you have to deal with bigotry, and phobias about YOU just because of who you are, and who you love. And that you ONLY have about 20% of the population to find someone else to share your life with, AND, it never goes away...get's better, but it ALWAYS there because people who are religious, and say they believe in a LOVING god, but they also believe you are EVIL, and sick, and judge you at every turn, and some states are trying to pass laws to either push you back into a closet, or cancel your community completely...it isn't easy or fun to deal with. And yes, I am gay.
