    ***Further Details*** The mercury in the bulbs does degrade. HOWEVER , so does the glass thats filters the radiation output. This is what appears to be causing the higher than desired UV readings. Just wanted clarify that the mercury itself isn’t miraculously increasing. 😁😁👍🏼

    So for months I have been investigating the death of one of my bearded dragons, the adult male, my female was housed separately with different light setup and she is very healthy, anyway I used this mercury vapor bulb off amazon because I trusted it based on all of the reviews and it seems to be wildly popular which is concerning because I still don't know if my lizard died from metabolic bone disease or a parasite or what not, but my suspicion is MBD.... I have the link here for the exact bulb and I just wanted to put it out there because it is very popular. Thank you so much!!! I was excited when I saw the title, this answer some of my questions. I honestly wasn't aware that UVB strength exposure depended on the activity of the animals. The only thing I knew was that 10.0 was for arid species and 5.0 was for tropical species (can't remember what numbers exo terra use). Also really thank you for the warning on exo terra. My Columbian tegu was on one (now I shut it off) fortunately she has been slowing down and been in a kinda mild brumation so she hasn't been fully expose to it lately. My bearded is on zoo med all ready so I was relief. Again always good to watch your video, it is very informative!

    Hi Newby here, love your videos so much and learned a heap. I do have a question though. I have had UVB bulb running for a good six months. both my blue tongues are doing great. but we had a major emergency the other day. Mr. T was having a wallow in the water and came back up to the log for a sunbake and shook himself and the bulb exploded all over him. I was quick to pick him up and clean the mess. I now am running a 100w Exo terra Swamp basking spot, in fear of it happening again. Can you do a talk on the dangers of using bulbs with the water splashing.. probably not a normal question but I'm sure it needs to be addressed.

    hey there TC. Independent of appropriate UVB output, is there any concern on having a linear style bulb cover the entire length of the cage as opposed to the same area as the basking spot?

  • @ReptileMountainTV

    @ReptileMountainTV

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes. Blue tongues are typically sunbeam style baskers in the wild. By not giving the entire enclosure uv you allow for a gradient of uv allowing the animal to select their exposure to the radiation rather than be forced to expose to it if they chose to be out of hiding at all.

I checked the solar meter site and they recommend having BOTH meters, just ONE is very expensive! I would primarily be using it to gauge effective uv distance in an enclosure and bulb life. I’m going to stretch for one, the site says my intended use is the 6.2R. Would I be missing out on any benefits for this application by going for the 62R instead of the 6.5R? Thanks.

    MVBs are great for heat and some UVB however because they are self ballasted they can turn off when then get too hot. Nice safety feature but not a good consistent source of UVB. They also don't provide the amounts that linear and some compact bulbs can provide. I do recommend them as supplemental but not primary sources of UVB.

    Hi, I know you want us to find out which uvb to use ourselves however I just want confirmation on whether the uvb I'm using is too strong for my blue tongued skink as I've been told a few times it's too much, I have an enclosure which is 4'x2'x18"(WxHxD) however the substrate takes up about 5 inches, and I'm using a reptisun t5 10.0 uvb 39W strip light, is this okay or too much?

    Oh wow I never thought some UVB's would increase the amount of UV when time passes, I'm getting a solar meter soon, one question TC, when it comes to you and your UVB lighting with northern blue tongue skinks, does the UVB cover the whole enclosure?, like is there a spot in the tank where it's shade? (excluding the hides), this might be irrelevant to this topic but some folks said that the UVB can't cover the whole tank, what's your opinion?

    can skinks get scale rot and what is the difference between scale rot and just a dried out stomach ??

  • @ReptileMountainTV

    @ReptileMountainTV

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes. Scale rot is the result of an infection of the skin. There are many causes but the most common is wet unsanitary living conditions. Think of scale rot like an infected rash from too much moisture. Dry belly scales is caused from too low humidity and it is not an infection. The thinnest part of the scale gets dry and begins to curl outward from lack of moisture. Like when people get dry skin in the winter time.

    In this video you recommend Reptisun 13w 5.0 UVB. But on your site under Lighting for Northerns you recommend 10.0 T5 HO tube UVB, and in your kit link you recommend ReptiSun 10.0 UVB Compact Fluorescent 26 watt "above all other coil type bulbs for UVB. It's still not perfect but it's a start." So I'm a little confused. Which is it? What is the most up-to-date information?

  • @ReptileMountainTV

    @ReptileMountainTV

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for reminding me to update a few things. My enclosures in the video have the bulb at about 6” from the skinks skin through 1/4in mesh the 13w 5.0 reptisun coil DID provide the appropriate levels of UVB according to the Furgeson Zones and was tested via Solarmeter 6.5. So they work for THAT set up. A 26w 10.0 coil will work for a 40 breeder height 18” tall. The Ideal bulb is to use linear bulbs either a 5.0 or 10.0 T5 HO zoomed or arcadia bulb depending on your set up. Each has different levels. So I recommend all three but it all depends on the set up. Height from skink’s skin, mounted inside or outside the enclosure...etc.

BUT re-watching it now, you said, “compact fluorescent (AKA coil bulbs)” and my UVB isn't a coil bulb it’s a linear bulb so does that mean it’s okay? I don’t have a solar meter and don’t know if (or maybe when) I’d be able to get one since they cost quite a bit (especially since I’m just 16 and don’t work at Maccas). I’ll leave it off and continue looking for replacements until you reply. (might also bring him out into the sun during the day cause its school holidays and I live in AUS and its summer so he will like that) [ExoTerra - 15W - 45cm/18" - UVB 100 for extra info] Also the T and then number rating thing doesn’t seem to be a thing in Australia can’t find that on anything here.

    A 5.0 will work if it's not being filtered out by anything in between it and the animal's skink such as a screen lid. The best way to see if the animal is getting the right amount of UV is with UVI meter such as the solarmeter. If you are providing dietary D3 then the 5.0 will certainly be enough.

His previous owners keep him on pure sand, he can barely open his eyes and a few of his toes have fallen off :( I only have one picture of him, and that's of his face and one if his legs is showing too. I don't really know how to identify different blue tongue skink species, do you have a video on that or something? Cause I'm bringing him home in a few days and I don't want his care to be wrong.

For Smaller species take 10-15% off. I consider adult northerns 500g and above. As far as feeding I feed a portion the size of their head no matter what age. I feed babies daily to every other day depending on appetite. I feed sub adults 2-3 x a week and adults once a week.

    UVB, etc. is a myth: *Source:* kzread.info/dash/bejne/d2eGz6t_cdXWc5c.html *Summary:* Using a UV spectrometer, he shows a reading of 2.2 on a sunny winter day in Wisconsin. In the summer, the reading would be much higher, and in certain other parts of the world, it would be dramatically much higher. For a popular bulb that claims to be full spectrum with UVA and UVB (by the way, I can tell from the packaging that it's the Zoo Med AvianSun 5.0 UVB bulb), the reading is 0.6 a few inches away from the bulb, tapering off to 0.0 at eight inches. The manufacturer recommends a distance of 16-18 inches! At that distance, there's no UVB, and to get a miniscule amount, your dove would have to be blinded. *Regarding full spectrum lights (that don't claim to also produce UVA and/or UVB): * * Full spectrum fluorescent lights are practically same as a typical fluorescent light that doesn't claim to be full spectrum. * Full spectrum incandescent lights--along with full spectrum fluorescent lights--also don't come close to daylight

    I was long hesitant buying a solarmeter 6.2 because of the high price (and most people who own reptiles don't bother with these), but now that I have it I realize how friggin important it is. Turns out that one of my exo terra lamps gave off relatively NOTHING, when I was planning for a bearded dragon who needs TONS. It was sold as a powerful desertic reptile lamp but even if you taped your lizard to it he still would not be getting enough... Same for my exo terra mercury vapor bulb which is supposed to be very powerful. Up to this day its still giving very sub par readings. I switched to Arcadia lamps, which are very powerful. Solarmeters also allow you to monitor your lamp's decrease over time so that you know when to change it instead of doing an automatic ''just in case'' change, so saves you money on the long run.

    I personally don’t suggest cohabitation unless its outdoors in Australia in a very large pit or you are a professional zoo doing so for display purposes at a zoo. Both species are not obligatory social animals so they don’t need companionship. All it does is increase risk of food competition, stress levels, risk of injury and limits individualized care. I only cohabitate social species when necessary. 😁
