Healthy Adult Part 2 / Schema Mode Therapy

Jess O'Garr takes us through the Healthy Adult Mode. This is Part 2. This schema therapy video will explain how the Healthy Adult Mode can manage maladaptive coping modes and dysfunctional parent modes and soothe the vulnerable child mode. These Schema Modes are moving parts that interact and Jess will explain how to use schema mode therapy with a case example.

Jess, your videos are awesome, especially for those people who are going through the schema therapy or just getting acquainted with its concepts. And it is so nice of you, as a therapist, to open up with your past issues and use it as an example and explain what would be a healthy way of managing the problem with the approach of schema therapy, well done. And yes, if you add a few more examples like these (this one was already an excellent one), it would help to understand and remind yourself what you should do to redirect yourself to a healthy pattern of thinking. I already did the biggest part of schema therapy with my therapist for over half a year and found it the most effective, which changed my life towards the good and helped me to become myself (we used it to cure my sociophobia). And your videos and materials are a great support to keep oneself on track. Keep on going! Greetings from Germany :)

I just wanted to say a big thank you for sharing the insights of your fibromyalgia. I have ME/CFS and have historically been a quite a sensitive person and a hard worker/ perfectionist. Your video really came at the right time. The more my condition progresses, the more I’m having to face my vulnerable child and learn new coping mechanisms other than achieving or avoiding. Your own experiences really helped me understand myself better and possibly the unhealthy reactions I may be receiving from other people. The tools are exactly what I need right now and I’ll look into learning these Thanks so much

Very helpful. It’s a problem that I have myself, only not with a punitive parent. More like a parent that doesn’t see mee, so I need to do all kinds of things just to feel I am living. Doing nothing, home alone will make me literally feel like I disappear.

The examples are fantastic help :) Would so appreciate more ways of how that negotiation table looks like... From an IFST perspective, there are no "bad" parts... just Parts that lost their way and are stuck in an unhealthy rote. Approaching them with the Kind Firmness of the Healthy Adult is what I'm fascinated by.

I always enjoy your videos and the way you explain things with personal stories and humour👍I was introduced to schema therapy along with ERP to help with my anxiety, my therapist found I had the abuse and mistrust schemas, which resulted in avoidant protector and the perfectionistic modes, I think schema therapy is very effective but unfortunately my therapist in Orange NSW left I'm looking forward to checking out your schema handbook and im glad i found your channel a while ago, keep up the good work 😉

Thank you so much. I really appreciated you walking through the thoughts/emotions/modes with a real life example. I have a request, could you walk through a fear of abandonment example and how that plays out depending on the coping style (avoidant, overcompensator, surrender). Thank you for these videos! Warm wishes!

I've just started schema mode therapy and nothing has ever made more sense to me. I feel hopeful for the first time that I'm going to overcome my eating disorder. I love all of your videos and must admit my perfectionist overcompensator is urging me to take copious notes, driving even when I'm in threat level zone rather than self soothing. But I'm learning. Your videos and resources are changing my life. Thank you. Ideas for healthy adult dialogue walkthrough: eating disorders and oversharing our vulnerabilities. I also have fibro so thanks for sharing that. I have this conversation several times a day.

I really appreciate your videos. so definitely keep going. 👏 I have a question? I only see two unhealthy adults in schema therapy. the punishing and the demanding. there must be more, e.g. cold-hearted adult, the belittling, irritated and many more. where do they fit in?

In the schema therapy model that I learned in therapy there is actually a third one, called the "guilt inducing parent" (not sure if this is the correct term, I translated it from Dutch). Not exactly sure if what you mentioned falls under this mode though, I think this mode is kind of vague to me. But belittling for example could also fall under the punitive parent maybe?

This was so very helpful. When doing the worksheet with a client, is it necessary that they understand all the modes and theory or can it be a learn as you go sort of thing?

I ask all my schema patients to watch the overview video a few times so they become familiar with the language and then we fine tune as we go.

Can you do one with a detached protector, please? I've found that the detached protector and the healthy adult often sound very similar in my head because both use logic and rationality as tools (but the former does that not to feel any negative feelings). I'd really appreciate that :)
