Healing from Sexual Abuse Q&A

Today's question is about self-blame. Why we continue to feel shame even when we know it wasn't our fault. The difference between "knowing" and "believing".

Thank you! I’m sobbing but they’re good tears…healing tears. When you said at the end, it’s not my fault, at first I felt nothing but you kept repeating it and then the emotion hit hard.

Dear Peggy, I am happy that I found your videos! It is like light in the dark tunnel for me. I see it and I hear noise coming from the light and feel the warmth but I am still overwhelmed by my pain. Thanks for the light! Can you make video how is it possible to meet loving partner after being sexually abused? Like what are the little steps a person should make to meet someone? Thanks again!

Peggy, i'm a crying mess right now, can't help it. I'm an emotional person. For me, what came up when you were talking was, Yes, i know what happened to me as a child wasn't my fault. I have to tell myself that on a daily basis, and then the yes, but you did this kicks in. And it totally sucks. Everyone of my abusers told me it was my fault that these things happened to me, and it doesn't help when your family doesn't believe that these things happened to you. And again, it sucks. My family doesn't talk to me because they blame me for what happened, but that's their choice, not mine. And another thing is, i was told just yesterday, that i need to quit making things up because, i'm just doing this for attention. WTF? I hope you understand my comment.....

Thanks for sharing in this conversation Jessi. I'm sorry you've been blamed for what your abusers did to you. As you remind yourself you're not to blame, take it a step further to acknowledging "why" your not to blame. So instead of just saying it wasn't my fault, say it wasn't my fault because... . This will help it feel more real.

Your welcome Peggy. Thank you, for saying that peggy, you made me feel better. Did you know you were the first person who told me, i wasn't alone anymore? When you told me that, i honestly cried because i felt someone actually understood me, and what i had to go through as a child. It wasn't my fault because: i was little when these things happened to me, so i didn't know any better, but THEY did. Honestly, that's the only thing i can think of right now.....

I'm so glad it helped you feel less alone. Your "because" is enough. Keep repeating and you'll end up recognizing some other truths about it too.
