Heal Your Frozen Shoulder Fast with These Home Stretches | Dr. Mandell

Adhesive capsulitis, commonly known as frozen shoulder, is a condition characterized by the stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. This occurs when the connective tissue surrounding the joint becomes inflamed and thickens, limiting motion and causing significant discomfort. Early intervention with targeted stretches is crucial in managing and potentially reversing this debilitating condition. These stretches work by progressively enhancing the range of motion, maintaining the elasticity of the joint capsule, and reducing scar tissue formation. When initiated early, stretching exercises can prevent the shoulder from becoming further immobilized, thus mitigating the severity of the condition. Additionally, these exercises improve blood flow to the affected area, promoting faster healing and reducing inflammation. Regular practice of these stretches not only helps in maintaining shoulder mobility but also alleviates pain and stiffness, contributing to a quicker recovery process. By incorporating these preventive strategies, individuals can manage symptoms more effectively and enhance their overall shoulder function, thereby improving their quality of life.

I hope your frozen shoulder heals soon Dr. Mandell! I had one about 8 years ago. It took around 2-3 years to 100% fully heal. It started to free up very gradually after the first year. I can confirm that all the exercises you describe are spot on. Especially the bad free arm hanging/swinging motions. During the slow healing phase, whilst doing this gently with a 5 or 10kg dumbbell I would get random pops as the connective scar tissue fibres snap! I came to realise that with each joint pop, I was getting more mobility back. As well as swinging the arm, whilst it hangs try lifting and lowering the dumbbell by bending the elbow and also twisting/rotating it back and forth whilst hanging it vertically. The inertia of the dumbbell helps to release the tense fibres. The pops are a good sign the therapy is working. Swimming regularly (breaststroke) helps also. With frozen shoulder it is very important not to immobilise as this just makes it get worse. The worst thing you can do is put the arm in a sling for days (even though it temporarily feels better) Good luck. Peter.

Thank you for going into details. I fell on valentine's day 2024 & shoulder came out of the socket. Insurance referrals and doctor issues caused a huge delay in my getting surgery and more delays getting to physical therapy. As a result my shoulder is frozen and I have been so concerned about ever getting back to normal. Your story gives me hope and thanks for sharing specifics to help the shoulder heal!
