Mark Spicer made a book about snipers when I was a kid and one of the methods they showed for concealing the face was a cold weather mask covered in jute. It was extra creepy 😂

@@KitCreepthe name Balaclava comes from women knitting this headwear for their male relatives fighting near Balaclava, Crimea during the Crimean War in 1854

I like the Avon C50 people think its silly to use a respirator in cold weather as a first grab item, but instant acesss to warm water via bladder or bottle line, microphone to phone + VPU, perfect hood/face sceals and no foging up 2 layer eye protection, with standard outsirts avalible for all use cases, and you just change the filters from ABEK2P3 to P3 and it just protects from dust/pollen etc with neglgible breathing resistance, mousture buildup and weight. It's a simplifyed 2/3 layer system and for high wind use nothing beats it for photo/video in windy rain, just like how pletors with a BT module on the side work fine for keeping your ears warm too but upgraing the drivers to somthing with better range is a fun idea.

I generally find, when I'm active, I don't need much insulation on my head at all. I've had big days this winter where I've been very happy in my ballcap, with my hood pulled up to keep the wind off my neck and ears. That said, for static insulation, hats are such an easy add. I picked up a dutch army cold weather cap in a surplus store about a decade ago, I love it. I also recommend the Särma merino knit hats that Varusteleka sells, if you're re-upping on scho-ka-cola any time soon.

Ball caps really are the best. The ultra light merino cap has been doing a great job of keeping my ears protected without overheating me. I don’t have many base layers that have hoods but I think that might be something I’ll play with in the future. Those tight hoods I see a lot of climbers using look handy.

Also strongly considering one of the Särma hats now. I’m a sucker for OD green.

You definitely could but I guarantee you’ll soak it with sweat pretty quickly. Even in cold temps. The back side is lined with wool. The itchy kind too.

One problem as a glasses user is that sweat can pretty quickly get on your glasses, making them incredibly annoying to use. Especially when it's hot and your rucking. I've noticed that with a shemagh it can stop the sweat from your forehead from getting onto your glasses, but I only realize now that i need to try out a beanie and see how it goes. Now the main question for me is whether to get the 56% wool 44% polyester smartwool sport beanie cuz i'd mostly be using it for hotter weather to stop dripping sweat, or the 88% wool 12% nylon one that you showed in the video. Any thoughts?

I’m a fan of the higher wool content because it doesn’t hold onto water the same way cotton or even “drifit” material would. And I agree about sweating with glasses. The beanie really does help.

KZread deleted my comments with the link for the VKBO Russian balaclava BUT here is the info without the link Russian Cold Camo has it stupid cheap right now for $17.50 free shipping. That's where I got mine, they are going out of business so it won't be restocked. I would recommend getting two.
