Heading into the New Zealand "Desert" - Episode 9

I leave Queenstown and head east into a dry barren landscape and come across a sign that says "The Heart of the Desert", where I ride up a rough rocky trail to see a incredible vast open valley that I explore. I then drop down on to another winding dirt tracks to end up on the shore of a lake that has an other worldly landscape.

Central Otago is where I grew up, spent so much time 4wding around the place, living in Perth now and watching you enjoy my home as much as I do fills me with joy and makes me miss home. Thank you for doing the place justice and getting out to some of the lesser known and seldom visited places👍

Awesome ride, Bannockburn used to be my playground when I was a kid, I rode my dirtbikes up there all the time, last time I did Carricktown was a few years back coming back on the MTB FS, rode up the old Quartz town side and back down Carricktown, epic place esp in Summer for a bike, Nevis river has some great Trout fishing further along and yeah you'd probably struggled to get the bike through! I rescued a couple of Adventure bikers of New Years at the far end the last big ford where a TT500 had drown and filled the airbox and carb with water, poor buggers had ben there for hours while no one stopped to helped, I had my big LC 80 and plenty of tools and being a bike enthusiast was keen to help em out. good guys too. the fords were plenty deep in Summer so now be well flowing Id say, though my big girl would get through no probs. Glad you took the Hawksburn road as well that's an awesome loop into Clyde, ya should have stopped at the Old Post Office, they have great food and coffee there too, and plenty of places to camp if ya had got a bit tied up there, its pretty hard to leave once ya settle in there, I never want to leave that place, beers pretty good too haha. I also went up to the PoolBurn and Manorburn dams over Xmas New Years, but the gate was locked on both tracks to Alex so had to turn back unfortunately still a great run, so props for going up there, def out of your way but worth every mile of it. look forward to the next day, cheers mate, btw NZ can be 4 seasons in one day, esp this time of year, ya doing well though and dam the miles ya doing each day is impressive considering allot of it is also gravel roads and dirt tracks.🤘 Next time def come in Jan or late Jan early Feb best weather!

Oh wow, you're right it just click, most if not all bridges are green, I wonder if it is like the Sydney harbour bridge, the reason it is grey is that it was the only colour they could get enough paint for. Maybe there was a sale of green paint when they made the bridges and they stuck with it haha. Sorry had to google it, there was nothing specific about New Zealand but there was this "It was a shade designed to complement the natural surroundings" Have fun on your ride.

No cursing behind the scenes as there are no expectation on these trips, so there is nothing to get worked up about, what ever happens is all part of the adventure. What's that saying, it's not an adventure until something goes wrong. I hope you are enjoying the series.

Production question - when you're filming the B-roll where you ride past the camera and off into the distance, are you doing that with a drone, and fly it up to you, or going back and fetching the camera :) Mr brother-in-law's partner comes from the south island and he's done a couple of the tracks you have by 4wd and said how great it was - but nothing in his photos captured the country you've shown so far. Very nice as always. 👍 I'll have to get there someday. I just made it into Baja on Tuesday on the ferry, landing in La Paz. There's TONS of desert here, broad valleys full of cactus, sand, and rocks. On the sides there's rugged mountains with almost no vegetation, only steep crumbling sides, tumbling rocks working their way to the bottom. Highway One coming up from La Paz takes you mostly through the center, going through high desert, then turning right at one point it takes you to the coast, and the Sea of Cortez, passing through the mountains on some lovely twisties. As you head down you can see bits of blue between the rocks until you get closer, then you see expanses of blue/green beauty. We are truly blessed to be Himalayan riders.
