I have the navy double breasted Reigate blazer by Brook Taverner. The fabric, 100% wool, is superb. It is smooth to the touch and looks and feels excellent quality. It also has a reassuringly good weight to it. I also have several pairs of pleated trousers from Peter Christian. I wear them with my Loake 1880 Brown brogue boots.

Regarding the footwear: for Americans, used Allen Edmonds. They’re not the best, but better than most people will ever encounter, and can be found in just about any size in good condition for under ~$50. For those who prefer new, CNES, BLKBRD, TLB Mallorca, and Meermin are great, though Allen Edmonds, too, can be found 50% off most times of the year.

I’m an older (67) short (5’ 6”) guy. I’m fit and in shape but not exactly slim. Pleated pants don’t look good on me. Now on watches, I own two Orients. A small seconds white dial Bambino and a black dial Ray II diver. Lovely watches. Excellent quality at a very affordable price.

I'm 5' 8" myself but a lot of men in my family are about your height or shorter. I think higher waisted pleated trousers are worth a try, especially a single pleat rather than double. The reason being it can help work with the crease to elongate your leg line in my experience. Not all pleated trousers are created equal!

Without doubt one of the best buys I have ever made in terms of something exceeding my expectations. I have a few watches including the Tudor GMT and the Black Bay 58 and this is right up there. When worn with business attire it works so well. I find that a lot of time it’s the accessories that can really elevate your look and the Bambino adds a touch of class. Great video as usual Regards

Interesting breakdown, thank you! Out of necessity and availability I'd probably do a lot by going with the cheaper options in made to measure (as I did back in my later student days) and I'd just get uppers made for the shoes and do the rest myself (which I normally do rarely, it's time consuming but it would of course be a steal). My real interest here is shirts because in a rare case I could (and do) go with off-the-rack sizing - I actually *do* have a Charles Tyrwhitt light blue... somewhere in my way to full closet😅 - I know the light blue is an absolute mainstay and I have...several... but rarely wear them because over the last decade or so I've come to prefer either monochrome whites or contrasting and complementary shirt to go with the suit colour (light pink, "vanilla", light khaki e.g.) or go straight to the Winchester shirts. (Need to get a couple more of Tyrwhitt shirts now that you brought it up, I occasionally treat shirts with mild neglect because I have so many for work that are calculated with a severely limited lifespan.😓) If I *had* to make a choice hat-wise I'd go with a grey Fedora (wool felt - perfectly fine and affordable and I honestly have inhibitions against getting something as posh as a rabbit or beaver felt for something as intrinsically "normal" as a Fedora, I have rabbit felt *Homburgs* but all my manifold Fedoras are wool felt) over the flat-cap though I love and wear both, I feel the Fedora, while maybe a bit less informal still can be worn with pretty much any level of formality and offer protection in addition to warmth over the flat-cap (though I own a rather substantial newsboy cap that actually offers some protection in it's "flappy-ness"). With this feature and even without seeing the luxury one in the wings I've already come to the conclusion that I'm a schizophrenic person when considering the prices of things I normally wear... but then I think most of us are.^^ Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

All excellent recommendations - the Orient Bambino especially - as I’ve commented before, a little gem of a watch! For chIno type trousers, I tend to buy Dockers D2 chinos, made by Levi - hard wearing, durable, timeless and inexpensive- usually around £50-£60, and available in a range of colours. Shirts, almost always Charles Trywhitt - why? They are always readily available in charity shops, often still with labels attached (unworn!). I’ve never paid more than £5-£10 for a shirt. They’re also available in a range of patterns, including some very attractive ginghams and candy stripes, if you don’t want to wear a tie.

15-20 yrs ago at the height of my professional life I spent real money on quality footwear. I have several nice boots and dress shoes that now need resoling. Problem is, I cant find a local shoe repair. Its not like I live totally in the sticks, I live in a town of 15,000 or so and nearby a town of 50,000+, but not one cobbler to be found. I would have to search the internet and drive at least an hr or two to drop them off or pick them up. Given that and the fact Im now a retired old man and dont have as much need for really nice shoes I have avoided spending over $100-$150 for footwear. Sometimes I luck up at the thrift store. Im my area they are usually only dept store quality, but at least I get em dirt cheap. Still I miss my nice boots and shoes. Cant bring myself to spend $300 a pair but I cant get my nice old shoes repaired, conveniently at least. Sad story.

Can I chuck in some other options? Seiko presage if you like a quartz dress piece or perhaps a Tissot PRX if you want a steel bracelet. £200ish. Both brands so a sportier looking watch for £200ish. A few wise second hand choices could really bring the price down. Second hand Loakes/Grensons £50. Maybe something like a Brooks Brothers jacket (£50 second hand). Some good quality M&S socks instead of the fancy ones. Charles Tyrwitt for the chinos and shirt, probably gets you in the market for deals too. A very similar quality outfit for maybe £500 less. Also, I think building up to this point. Maybe starting with the chinos with a cotton Oxford for something smart in summer. Pick up a blazer when a bargain surfaces. Watch as a Christmas treat. Overcoat in the sales. Chip away at it. See what you have already that could be upgraded.

Again Ash, Edutaining content. I have most of these pieces from various sources, including a very cheap (£21 from eBay) Harris tweed overcoat. I really must get a grip of Pocket Squares though, I have 2 proper ones (seldom employed) and a piece of cotton as a faux one in a presidential style. Watch-wise I have a fitness tracker in a traditional watch style and I utilise an analogue face option as I find it easier to read if I'm not wearing my glasses. I do have a quartz "Field" watch for times I am away from a recharging facility. I have not seen Chinos in that colour Tan before, I believe it is "Coyote" Tan in military circles. Headwear... I have a couple of flat caps, several bowlers, a fedora etc. I must admit, I seldom wear a hat, I should do if for no other reason than to keep rain out of my hearing aids. Until next time *salute

Of course you base things on Pounds and UK companies but we are watching The Chap's Guide, not The Bro's Guide. I do notice that the UK Pound is practically double the Canadian Loonie. I do understand that you would have to buy all the items on the list, but yeah... By the way if you're on a budget you should go for a quartz instead of an automatic, it's way cheaper and no one will notice the difference. In that price range quartz watches often look better even than their automatic counterparts, because the casing will be less thick.

I am. fan of the GS brand, although, like many people I find it hard to countenance spending Rolex/Omega money on a Japanese watch. This is not snobbery, but more so a sense that the Seiko is a good watch, but Swiss timepieces fall more easily into the great watch category. On a personal level, I think I would definitely invest in a GS, but only as part of a collection that already has the more traditional underpinnings. I know this makes me sound like an old traditionalist, but I am rather conservative and favour tradition as a matter of course. But GS make truly excellent watches without any doubt at all.

What you describe as low price or budget is far beyond my budget range Charity shops and eBay are my sources for good clothes Occasionally a ‘good ‘ pair of Goodyear welted shoes from Jones the Bootmaker as a birthday present I’m really interested in all the different ways to tie a tie as I only knew two before Would you consider a ‘working class’ very low income section to this series Seeing as so many people in the country are struggling on the breadline almost It’s amazing how good you can feel once you dress smartly even if you only do it for special occasions I have now collected a range of chinos, prince of wales check trousers Ten pairs of shoes of different colours and styles Found a proper cobbler, a tailor and collected a variety of suits and sports jackets I’m working through getting a collection of dress shirts now All this on the tightest of budgets imaginable! The gentleman’s gazette and yourself are missing out on a trick by not catering for people in my price bracket It is possible and I think I could stand side by side with you and not disgrace you in a number of outfits I challenge you to think of the lowest prices and lowest budgets 🤔

I have achieved some excellent items at remarkable prices and the thrill of finding a nice piece at a few £s is almost like a form of sport for me after all these years. I would suggest the half Windsor as the one-and-done tie knot. Almost all of my videos feature me wearing my ties with a HW. A four-in-hand has its place, for more casual situations, but the HW will always be king.
