Incredibly interesting video for me chaps and here is why. The issue you have mentioned before but elaborated on more in this video regarding the joining piece between the two heater hoses caused me problems after I renewed the hoses with brand new hoses as a precaution against failure. I could never understand why when I turned the heater past half way towards cold, the car would start to overheat. After months of head scratching and garages unable to diagnose I substituted a good used hose and the problem completely went away. I bet this was the same issue. All your videos benefit greatly from the great enthusiasm you have for the this brand of vehicles and the meticulous attention to detail. Great work and really appreciate you making these videos. I love absorbing the experience you have gained. Thankyou.

thanks for taking the time and effort to make all these videos - I have Rover45 that drove all the way Manchester to London without skipping a beat BUT after leaving it parked for a few hours it would not start didn't even cough! So I have to strip the engine so this is absolutely brilliant info for me.

Excellent video. Thank you so much for your documentation of this process. I'm in the process of rebuilding a 160vvc engine and this is similar enough to be very helpful indeed for a novice.

That was really informative! It's helping me (a completely non-mechanically minded person) to understand how the K-engine works. I do have a question: I thought that a small bead of a special sealant (a Loctite product) should be used between the head and the gasket. Have I misunderstood that?

  • @DPNTV

No sealant is needed with that gasket

@@DPNTV Thanks for that. It seems less messy that way, and not prone to using a sealant incorrectly.

I might have memory issues, I thought the initial Torque up for the bolts was raised to 30Nm ? Then the two 180 degree turns.

  • @DPNTV

the manual and the instructions with the kit both say 20Nm so that it what we used it is also what we have used before with no problems

We have never needed yet to skim a head so I would try cleaning first like we did in the video and then check the condition

@@DPNTVGood advice. Lazy pro-workshops ALWAYS skim Cylinder Heads as it saves labour and time cleaning it. The cost is passed to the customer. In many cases Skimming is simply not necessary. A thorough clean and check with a reliable straight edge should confirm the head face is true ... or not. Check for Fire Ring indentations on the Exhaust Valve sides of the Head. Unless fire ring indentations are really deep, unlikely, fitting the MLS ( Multi-Layer Steel ) and the all important Head Saver Shim is all that is necessary. Sometimes there is evidence of a previous reface ( Skim ) and further skims could render the Head scrap. Sometimes the U-Shaped recess in the head face next to the Combustion Chamber circumference will be completely machined away. Seen that more than a few times. Chances are that Head is only fit for recycling. On the few occasions Cylinder Heads I've worked on needing refacing I take it to a local engineering firm to have the head processed on a Grinding Machine, not a skim cutter. A light grind is far less harsh a process on the alloy and produces a superior surface interface for the new Gasket ... I have seen a Rover Cylinder Head come back from a Skim in worse condition than before the skim. Placing a Straight edge on that head saw daylight under the straight edge. Always check for truth. I stopped that head being fitted without that simple check. That if fitted would be an immediate failure. Always check the work is good. The poor old Cylinder Head Gasket invariably gets the blame when the real blame lies elsewhere. Cylinder Head Gaskets rarely fail. Invariably they are first damaged by some other process such as over heating, Prime cause of overheating is coolant loss. Coolant lost can be due to many many reasons.

The one we used in this video works well there are many different types out there and I think with research it's a personal choice which one will work for you

Had my headgasket done on my rover engine was silent no overheating before the job was done / so when the job was done they told me on starting up the car a valve shattered on start up what would cause that to happen

  • @adogmcdizzle

You never seem to block the flywheel... I want to change my oil rail as well, so I assume it's better to prevent the crankshaft from moving?

  • @DPNTV

    @DPNTV

    Жыл бұрын

yes, it is important the crankshaft doesn't move. we used an AIR IMPACT DRIVER WRENCH when we removed crankshaft pulley and we also used a method to prevent the crankshaft moving which we covered in the video

Hi there my8 how long does a new gasket last I have a rover 75 1.8 petrol 220000 mls is it worth it to repair it

  • @DPNTV

there is no way of knowing how long a new head gasket will last but if the engine is looked after and you keep an eye on the water levels there is no reason it should not last for years

I would have also put on the better N-series gasket, stronger oil rail, higher tensile bolts and PRT thermostat in order to bring it up to modern spec. Not much more effort if you are doing the gasket anyhow. kzread.info/dash/bejne/k4GXzMVsfNCzppM.html A minor point but checking for air out of the exhaust or out of the dipstick is a waste of time as they have other exists that are free to the air.
