He Was The Best Running Back in Football. He Wanted to Play Tight End

Спорт

Imagine if Christian McCaffrey went into Kyle Shanahan's office and demanded that the San Francisco 49ers change him from a running back to a tight end. That would seem absurd, right? Well, in the 1973 offseason, Dallas Cowboys running back Calvin Hill, coming off of a 1,000-yard season with the team, decided that he was being misused in Dallas' offense, and that he should be playing tight end instead. It went about as well as you'd expect

Ah! Calvin Hill! The same Calvin Hill who married a woman who was roommates in college with the future First Lady and presidential candidate in Hilary Clinton. And the same Calvin Hill who was the father of NBA hall-of-famer Grant Hill.

Billy Cannon was another that switched from back to tight end. He was a back with the Oilers then a tight end with the Raiders. Yes, it was with different teams.

Considering how big he is (6'4) and could catch, I'm not surprised he thought TE made sense.

Thanks for the video. Did you realize how tall Calvin Hill was? I think he was hoping this would extend his career. Normally your running backs have a Lower center of gravity and are 6’0 or shorter. Calvin Hill was 6’4. Yeah he was a great running back but you could see how it might have made sense. He was one of the tallest running backs to ever play the game

Thanks for giving some attention to Calvin Hill, who's on my All Time Cowboys team practice squad. You're right, though in fairness he did have an unusual body type for an RB. I wonder if his motivation was more prolonging his career or if really enjoyed the taste of playing TE he got in practice. Maybe a combination.

If he was a Raider, it may have happened. They did that with Billy Cannon (move to TE from RB), and they would do that with Todd Christensen (who, ironically, was drafted by Dallas as a FB in 1978) and Ethan Horton.

Hill had the height to play tight end (Christian McCaffrey doesn't), but not the weight or bulk. Tight end wasn't his lane.

Thanks for this video. I'm old enough to remember him as a player and I always wondered what happened to his career. For a while he seemed on track for the HOF, then he went to the World Football League for a season. When he came back to the NFL he played several more seasons, but after he came back was only a role player instead of a star. It seems like not seeing things on the same page was likely a big reason for him to go to the WFL, which was not a good career choice. Oddly enough, as good as he was in his early years, he also for two seasons took a back seat to Duane Thomas with the Cowboys. Duane Thomas would be another interesting subject for a KZread video.

JG9 when Hill came back to the NFL he really became a pass catching RB more than a runner. And was horribly used by George Allen on my Redskins which could have dampened his stats…. but prolonged his career as well.

Hill would have been succeeded as a RB, I believe. I would have wanted to extend his career anyways (injuries did inevitably play a role in Hill's opinion, I think). Calvin Hill is one of my all-time favorite players. He was a likeable guy and a good teammate. Injuries was unfortunately a problem with him.

He was a quality football player. What is wrong with him wanting to switch positions? He had his reasons. A better story would be why isn't he considered a hall of famer? I always enjoyed watching him play.
