Mary Chapin Carpenter, Emmylou Harris, Kathy Mattea, Suzy Boggus, Trisha Yearwood, Pam Tillis and Patty Loveless all on the same stage. In my opinion the ladies of that era were some of the best country artists of all time and will never be repeated again.

Allison Tate A lot of it is so close to pop now I think. These songs are classics that everyone just loves to listen to even close to 30 years later. Songs today don't last on the radio a month before the next cookie cutter song is out to replace it. Don't get me wrong, I love to jam to today's country just like everyone else, but few songs today will even join the same league to classics like this. :)

Back in December 1993 this song caused a lot of wives to say "There has to be changes in how things are." One of them told me to either get my boyfriend to change or I should leave. After three months of watching the changes that were happening in her life and the changes that weren't happening in mine, I decided she was right. The fact I'd met a pleasant, friendly man who was willing to discuss the lyrics with me instead of talking about how hot the women might have factored into the decision, LOL!

I finally had the opportunity to meet my favorite female country singer of the 80’s and 90s, and my crush. It was Christmas time near Kerrville, Texas in 2012, Suzy Bogguss. She was so down to earth, so personable, such a wonderful lady, a beautiful person and very likable soul. I had my picture taken with her after her concert. We talked for half an hour. She told me that she had never met a man with my name, she told me she loved my name and she would always remember it. She actually kissed me on my lips and I about passed out. A dream come true.....now I can die happy and fulfilled.😘💋🥰

@Leo Peridot Erm...Kris Kristofferson attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship. That said, country music artists (for the most part) know on which side their bread is buttered and will aim for as wide an audience as possible. Back in the 90s the politics were much more civilized and positions much more fluid than they are now. Country music also enjoyed probably its greatest crossover appeal, particularly among women.

I had the privilege of seeing MCC when she released “C’mon, C’mon” about 1993. It may still be my favorite concert ever with a solo female artist and that album has nary a poor song on it. “Passionate Kisses”, “ He Thinks He’ll Keep Her”, “ I Feel Lucky”, “Only a Dream”, “I Am a Town”, “ I Take My Chances” and the title song..... it was a warm summer night in Philly and Chapin was at the top of her game along with the late John Jennings. I remember that show because my wife hadn’t really been exposed to her music prior, and she left a certified fan. What I remember most is the way she reduced me to tears twice during the show - when telling the story that eventually evolved into “Only a Dream” and then when she closed with “C’mon, C’mon” - one of the most poignant stories about love and loss ever put on vinyl. She had a really good run in the ‘90s and I still listen to her now. Thank you, Chapin..... gotta love a Jersey Girl.

Looking back on Chapin's success it's really remarkable. She wasn't country in the traditional sense but her songs were so good and spoke to people like Loretta and Dolly's songs did. That's the real problem with most of the current mainstream country, the songwriting is lazy and shallow. For a genre that's prided itself on storytelling, that's a shame.

Eddie Sutphin "He Thinks He'll Keep Her", one of Mary Chapin's (Billboard) No. 2s, of which she had three, between 1991-94. She did claim one No. 1, "Shut Up and Kiss Me", a Grammy Winner Vocal, (1994). She had 18 Top 20 releases, stretching to 1996. All the best to her. A beautiful lady, a super great songwriter, owning a rich legacy, of endless proportion.

Country isn't what it used to be. I grew up in the 90's when country like this ruled the airwaves. Today's Country isnt even close to this! I'd rather listen to country from the 90's as opposed to today. This one hits the nail on the head, as it was also one of my favorites by her. These women left their mark on country-now hopefully it will not get eroded.

Even as a regular guy, this song chokes me up. It brings to mind, a time in the past, when things felt better. However, that's not what it's about. The royalty, of country music women, telling the truth. I have to bow my head when Chapin walks out with her guitar, to a standing ovation. Never forget.

A time of answering machines, mix tapes, video stores, and penny candy.......and my first kiss.....Lmao! The feeling I get from 90s country is hard to describe. It's like magic.

lacouerfairy - It is an emotional song indeed. For some reason after about 25 years this song popped into my head out of nowhere and I got the same distinct feelings as when I heard it as a kid. Unfortunately in the song the woman walked away, but real stories make real art. I’m glad I found this. Oh, and what a lineup of background vocals!

This song always confused me. As I grew up I was taught that women go out to work full time ,share tasks equally in relationships and that I should value myself. So now I am a mother of three , I work full time earning equal to said husband teaching men how to do their jobs, my house is amazing and spotless and nothing has been sacrificed . We are all happy , and my children will go on to pursue better hopefully, in the realisation that if they work hard physically or mentally, they can achieve what they want. Maybe things were different back then , but now at 40 , I thank my parents for all their wise words and encouragement. This woman she is singing about probably should have realised how powerful she was and pursued it ALL instead of putting herself in the position whereby she thought being a house mum and wife is the be all and end all. She obviously grew up with the distinct message that this is what women are meant to do. Ladies you don't have to sacrifice your own lives for the sake of others. You have to take good care of yourselves for the sake of your kids as they will pick up on any negativity and learn from what they're first disposed to. Value yourself.
