You got a Supreme commander at the top, you got dozens or hundreds (depending on where) of soldiers who answer to captains, you got rules and regulations, even rules to "war" (i.e. no touching families or Joe Blow civilians) in that life.

If you think about it for a relative small family in New York Bonnano yielded a lot of power and stayed Boss for over 30 years without incident until Gambino, Luchesse, and Magaddino made they move and took over the commission. He basically told Gambino and them to go F themselves and lived to be 97. His faction was still loyal to him to the end. Built a satellite family in Montreal established the Drug pipeline with Luciano with the Sicilian mafia that became known as the pizza connection. Bonanno problem was his ego and hunger for more power he played his cards wrong and still lived to tell the tale.

According to the Online Etymological Dictionary, lam means: "flight," as in on the lam, 1897, from a U.S. slang verb meaning "to run off" (1886), of uncertain origin, perhaps somehow from the first element of lambaste, which was used in British student slang for "beat" since 1590s.

Also not to mention the whole reason they were all pinched was due to Gotti's big mouth. He had every right to tell on Gotti but he should be in prison for whacking the amount of people he has.
