I was also recently at a bird of prey experience day in the UK and the woman there told us almost the exact same story. Now, it could just be that Ben went to the same place as me, but I like the idea that this owl-punch-man has become an urban legend amongst all raptor keepers and his story is passed on to visitors as a warning…

When I was a kid, we went with our school to a bird of prey reserve with flight demonstration and stuff. We all sat in a roman theatre ruin to see them glide across for a show. Then a falcon landed on my neck and try to lift my shirt up. Turns out I had a lizard imprint on my collar. I wasn't scratched or hurt at all, had 8 holes in the back of my shirt though.

The wanting to scar oneself is already a dumb idea. But did it not occur to him, that he could have just scarred himself with a somewhat sharp object without being at danger of his eyes being poked out by a bird of prey?

What really makes me angry is, if the laws are similar to dogs, that owl could have been euthanized if it attacked the man, even if it were in self defense and provoked. Doesn't always matter if it's the first time in some cases, an animal deemed "aggressive" is considered a serious liability in regards to public safety. At the very least that owl would be pulled from being allowed to interact with people like it is. Which, with enough conditioning (as they usually only let the public interact with the most docile/sociable examples of the animal), it could become quite depressed in not experiencing any more. If you want a scar from an animal so badly you are willing to get one, not naturally but by provoking one that was raised in captivity you're already a poser. So just go to a body mod person and you can pay for scarification. Chances are it will look cooler than the real thing and you can just lie. After all. I doubt you were going to tell people "Yeah, I got this scar from a zoo owl I kept harassing." No, you were going to make up some story already anyway.

all that and yet i reckon all he would have had to do is lower his arm down. the bird wants to be perched on a nice high spot. so its perfectly happy being perched on your fist when you have it raised up but if you lower your arm the bird will be like "what the hell am i doing on the lower part of this branch?" and start trying to walk up. for an eagle owl you might have a nice long glove on but if you let it walk off the glove and onto your bare arm itll claw you up theres a reason youre wearing the glove. the bird doesnt have to be attacking you to hurt you, they dig their claws in just to hang on.

This reminds me of one time at my school. So apparently an event was going on, but at the finals of the event, someone set up a lie that would make one of the finalists look like a fool and lose. The lie involved a dog and how he had a secret. However, one of my friends found out about this after it happened, and immediately after the event, he got close to the dog by talking to the person and then fatally stabbed the dog with his pocket knife in front of everyone. He then stabbed the liar multiple times and slit their throat and stomach. In the end, he was charged with manslaughter and was expelled, but because of some of his medical conditions, namely autism and schizophrenia, he was sentenced to a mental hospital and stayed there for over a year. Because of this, all future events of that kind at my school were cancelled. The school still hasn’t forgotten about the incident.
