the method they use on this show in psychology is called 'Flooding'..they basically make guests face their fear and increase their anxiety to a maximum. .because anxiety can't stay max forever it eventually calms down. So even though they are childish he wants to overcome his fear in this way. stop blaming th show

I agree. I don't blame the show. I blame Korean culture for continuing to stigmatize psychiatry, mental illness, anxiety, etc. As for others "blaming the show"- I think people are more angry at people's reactions (how they laugh at his anxiety) rather than how they try to resolve the issue (though I'm sure people disagree with the "flooding" attempt as well). I hope in the coming years, Korean society might be more open to seeking treatment for depression, anxiety, and the like.

PianoFanatic1989 Okay well it is a show...he knows how it works...they cant be all sad throughout the entire thing...this is what the guy wanted..an audience and people to publicly help him?? Lol. Stop being so picky. Literally this is such good way to address a problem, having the smiles of people who support him ..not everything can be exactly the way you want it...and not everything works the way you see it....and you can stop complaining about pointless things...😑😑

지국 빵! I'm not asking for them to be sad throughout the entire segment. I'm asking for the show to aid him properly. There have been episodes where the hosts have done a good job of shedding light to issues present in daily society, whether it be through guests with familial problems, racial issues, etc. but in this case, they downplay his anxiety entirely, blame it on stress, and say it can be overcome if he can gather the courage to do so. Severe anxiety of this level can't be solved with a simple, "You'll get over it eventually." Try telling that to a depressed person- "you'll get over it eventually." Sorry, that's not how mental illness works. The audience, also in large part, don't seem to find this as a big issue which leads one to the conclusion that Korean society itself doesn't acknowledge this as an important issue. You yourself said that I am "complaining about pointless things" so I can see that you too don't take mental illness seriously.

Amira, you're totally right on. At first I liked this program but still enjoyed watching even though they always treat mental /emotional disorders in a confusing variety of ways. One show may recommend help and have polite interactions and yet with another similar case they differently. 🤔 Wonder how much of this is the writers and producers directions? 🖖 I really feel that the hosts are intelligent hood people but except for the new young host they are all professional comedians. Which is the basis of the show. 🤔 The show needs to vet stories and guests in a better way.

I don't think psychologists/psychiatrist treatments are seen as legit in Korea. Like, there's still this stigma around them. If people do see psychiatrists, they do it secretly, so I'm not at all surprised that they don't have a specialist on as well as why they don't understand his anxiety issue on this show.

I agree that a lot of guests on this show need therapy but this is a variety show not a documentary. The purpose is to do a short segment observing the situation and then wrap it up with a bow while still making the audience laugh. The guests will have seen the show before and should know what they're getting into. All a real psychologist would do in this setting is say a few encouraging words at the end tbh.

Plus, how many times is he going to be in a controlled environment to allow desensitization to said phobia (not many if he doesn't have a therapist to set them up)? How is he going relax or use relaxation techniques if there's no therapist to coach him through it?

+May Jeganmogan +Watopeng Yup. You hit the nail on the head. There still is a huge stigma around in Korea about seeking proper help- the Korean mentality is mostly to keep problems bottled up or face them head on (sort of like how they were forcing the poor kid to talk to the women to his left). If people do see psychiatrists, they do it secretly (they pay privately versus paying through their government insurance so that it doesn't appear on their insurance records to avoid being publicly shamed or losing face). I'm not at all surprised that they don't have a professional therapist on the show- there's still too much of a bad reputation among them, sad as it is. Nor am I surprised at how everyone laughed it off when seeing how anxious he was. Korea has a long way to go in terms of accepting mental illness, anxiety, etc.

What you’re talking about is a form of psychological treatment called SD which entails gradually exposing the individual to their phobic stimulus. However the show did nothing wrong. The show basically carried out a simulation of an effective psychological treatment for specific anxiety called flooding. Flooding is basically immediate exposure- what you call “automatically forcing him” and it’s actually really effective- hence the reason he was able to improve by being able to talk to and make eye contact with the girl in the audience. The show did nothing wrong so please avoid commenting on matters you don’t have knowledge of.

Saying "You should have some guts." is, for me, a little insensitive. Maybe due to the generation gap or the lack of awareness, we usually take these sicknesses lightly when we shouldn't. His fear for women already affects his lifestyle, he can't go to the hospital because of women, he can't order food because of women, I really hope that he could overcome this fear of his maybe with the help of a psychiatrist.

Like you can tell he clearly has an anxiety disorder, yet they are forcing him to "look at the audience" and say this and that rather than talking to him, hearing him out and trying to give him the best advice. They should have had an expert on the show to actually have that connection with him. Like he said, it's easier said than done, it's a battle he has with his mind which effects him a lot. Really wish they could have been more considerate rather than making jokes and laughing very often.

Reminds me of myself back in elementary to high school. But since I'm kinda okay now. I can now clearly point out the whys and whats. 1) I was scared of both men and women who were older than me. Simply because I felt inferior and unworthy of their time. 2) I wasn't *scared* of girls my age but my mind always went blank when they try to talk to me. I thought they were *OTHERS* 3) I was completely fine talking to boys my age, youngsters and elderly people regardless of gender. I thought of them as equals We have pretty similar symptoms but there's a slight difference, For older men and women, I would sweat profusely and both my hands and lips tremble but I can make steady eye-contact and I know what I wanna say but I can't say it properly. As for girls my age, I don't sweat nor tremble but I can't make eye contact and I simply don't have anything to say but I do respond to questions without looking at them. One of my biggest problems back then was also *ordering food* at the school cafeteria or restaurant. I simply couldn't do it. And whenever I tried, I would just back out right in the middle of ordering. Which is why I had my friend (my only close friend at the time) to order for me whenever I wanted to buy something. I just gave him like a tip or something or I told him he could buy one for himself too just so that he'd agree to do it. He kept doing it for me from 4th Grade to end of High School. It's weird... but right after I went to college. (Since I didn't have any friends) I tried to order for myself for the very first time and it wasn't so bad after all. I don't have any problems talking to people anymore after that. =)

Roger Tan Exactly. It’s all about experience. When you don’t have much experience/exposure or have bad experience than it might be hard. But like when you talk to them you kind of overcome that feeling. I used to be shy and not talk to many people but when my cousin told me to not care what people think about you and people will like you if you are an open person and that definitely helped me. But still I kinda have a little anxiety with men who are like 40-50s outside my family(not everyone outside but certain people). Like I kinda feel uncomfortable because of things that happened in the past. I feel like definitely during/after college really helps out with that since it’s like exposure to the outside world. Also it’s good to know that you overcome your anxiety🙌🏽

Huh , I can relate to the one where his mind completely blank everytime a woman talk to him . Not that I'm afraid of men or women . My case is not as serious but sometimes I have those moments where I mess up something I say to a stranger . There's this once incident when I blurted out a menu that doesn't exist when ordering through the drive thru because I was so panic and the one time I was ordering something too and just said yes yes although I didn't want to at first .. now I have to write down on a paper or type it in my phone before asking or ordering something . With males , I just prefer to distance myself sometimes from them because I sometimes get nervous around them , it takes me a while to talk to them but so far I only have a male friend that is closer to me . But anyway , I was suprised when one of the mcs tried to move his head forcefully to look at the women like ??? I think it's quite rude ._.

I think the ideal scenario to ease him in would be if he was with a big group of guy friends and maybe one female friend. That way, there are other people to talk to and he doesn't have to interact with her but he can get used to a woman being around him. Ideally a tomboy 🤔 this is a tricky one.

As an introvert guy who still have this anxiety, I would like to say something too. I used to be afraid of girls and women especially those who are teachers. But now, I lost most of my anxiety and I could easily talk to girls now. There are some girls/women that are hard for me to approach or me feeling nervous being approached by them though. On some girls/women, my mind go blank sometimes that I don't even know what to say(regardless if they are beautiful or not). I still have this anxiety but I think it will gone one day because it gets better from day to day as I try to expose myself to company of female more. Also, I have been thinking that I want to date a girl like him too because I never date a girl my whole life. So, please don't hate me if I'm very nervous and sweat a lot if I get a date with a girl one day. I never date a girl but imagining it makes me nervous. Hope my fellow sufferers get better too. It's very hard at first but it will get better if you surround yourself more with girls/women through the psychology method "flooding". P.S. : When Jiyong talked to the girl, it made me smile happily I watched it more than 5 times for that part :)

In most Asian countries, most people would just tell ones with mental disorders like depression, anxiety, or bipolar to man up and tell them that they are too sensitive. It was like this for me this way because I develop depression in a very young age (6th grade) and my friends would just think that I'm sensitive and negative and completely ignored it. It wasn't until 3 years after that I was officially diagnosed of depression. But still, it is highly ignored in my country especially and there are only a few circles of people who actually do acknowledge and care about it.

He has anxiety from a trauma which is understandable. This show needs professionals for these types of situations because it was wrong to force him to sit next to and talk to women when he stated that he had anxiety towards such situations. Imagine if you had to be forced to face what you're scared of or gives you anxiety? I am like him, I am scared of snakes (particularly pythons). I get such bad anxiety when I even think about them let alone having to see a picture or video of them and worse, being forced to have one NEAR ME OR TOUCH ME!!!! just the sheer thought of it gives me anxiety so it was wrong for them to do that to him.

I feel sympathetic with what he's feeling and going through, because I was in his situation when I was his age. This is not a simple shyness with girls. My problem was I was labelled from childhood as a shy kid by my family because I was very introverted and reserved that it was wrong to be that way, and growing up that was ingrained in me. I also have a traumatic experience that I went through on top of that. I can't understand what's wrong with me because whenever I meet new people I can't talk to them, I can't look at the person, hands sweating profusely, nervous to the core that I stutter when I speak, and my mind goes blank then fight or flight kicks in, like what he did when one of the girls sat beside him. If my mind's not blank my mind is racing in different directions that I get overwhelmed and shuts up. The embarrassment that I felt after only worsened my situation. My subconscious was always telling me that people will not like me because I can't express my feelings, that I'm shy etc. It's quite true that when he gets to college he will be forced to communicate and improve his situation, but the anxiety will always be there unless he go to a psychiatrist, but he will need to learn and be patient on himself if he wants to somehow manage it one day. But it will never be easy. What the mcs doing to him are well intentioned but in a wrong way, it will only worsen for him.

As one commenter mentioned, one of the ways for a person to overcome their fears is to face their fears. Sure, the people in the show were a bit insensitive but that is one of the ways to help a person overcome their fears. Also, just in case someone misunderstands again, they're not laughing at his difficulties. I don't know what the subtitles are like since I don't need them but they're not always 100% correct. Heck, they're sometimes 50% wrong...

I was scared homeboy would pass out, honestly. I've been shamed for my social anxiety and the best way to solve it isn't to force yourself into situations you're uncomfortable with. It's a process and the last thing you deserve is to be shamed or told you're too soft or too sensitive or told to "just get over it". Your feelings and fears are valid and you deserve help, love and support.

He is so cute and has a great personality! I am getting secondhand anxiety just watching this though. For me, I have what I guess is social anxiety but it's just in general. It gets on my nerves when people call me shy because that's not how I see myself. Of course I am more open with my friends. But when I want to make a comment in class, my temperature rises and I get this bad feeling in my gut, but I basically have to ignore it. Sometimes I fumble with my words too, because I'm trying to figure out how to express what I want to say. I mean you can have courage and do things in spite of your anxiety, but that doesn't make it magically go away. It's like a decision every time, "Do I want to deal with this today or not?"
