I work the overnight shift and sip a Nos for 3 hours and it helps keep me up. Been doing it for over a decade now and my blood pressure is usually on the low side. A “heart attack” is technically due to plaque build up in your coronary arteries (the main arteries in your heart). Also called a STEMI. This is mainly due to either lifestyle choices (diet/obesity) or some other genetic predisposition. So this cause of death was a STEMI and then a cardiac arrest due to a heart attack, but the most likely cause of death was lifestyle…… not Red Bull. P.S I am a RN who worked in a cardiac ICU for 5 years and am currently in CRNA school. Hope this family finds peace. Amen

Am almost certain I can guess where the truth in that girl's story lies, and what are the omissions. Her and her family always hated how many energy drinks her dad had, because they always heard 'how bad it is for you'. So when this heart attack happened, rather than the Dr being the first to bring it up, they probably mentioned to the doctor, 'He drank a lot of energy drinks, could that have contributed to the thick blood?' to which the doctor would've given some answer about there being a possible link between energy drinks and blood issues, etc. The family are trying to make sense of it all, and so they will latch onto anything that helps them have a reason why it happened, so they don't have to face the randomness of the universe and the bad luck of genetics.

I have real doubts that at the ER the first thing a doctor will ask about a patient that just died from a heart attack or cardiac arrest (whatever the etiology may be) is if the patient drank a lot of energy drinks. Especially when considering that the supposed underlying cause that lead to this was "really viscous (thick) blood". The studies that do show an increase in blood thickness due to energy drinks are very few, and the connection between the two is weak at best. The predominant causes behind viscous blood are elevations in RBCs / WBCs / Platelets / some kind of Coagulopathy / etc. - all of which energy drinks have very little (if any) influence on, AND DEFINITELY CANNOT cause such extremely viscous blood as described by her. The only thing that might raise a suspicion is that energy drinks may result in increased tendency of platelets aggregation, but I'd say that this effect is weak, and is a really big stretch from this and the number one cause you'd suspect behind death of this man. Quite frankly, the whole story sounds completely farfetched and made-up. Rip to the father (if he is indeed dead), but I wouldn't bet my money on the story.

I find myself developing a sensitivity to caffeine over time when I have smashed 400mg caffeine preworkouts in the past no problem. Now, I get near jittery around 250-275. I think it's my body telling me to relax. While I like caffeine, it gives me anxiety and my baseline blood pressure is in the healthy range but I speculate the caffeine pushes it towards hypertension when it's in my system. I can feel some veins pulse and my head rush when I do take high amounts of caffeine. I'm currently slowly going through my caffinated preworkouts. Mostly have light stim or pump pre workouts now. I hate coffee so I may have 1 sugar free monster per day and a couple diet sodas but that's about it and I avoid the daily energy drink at times.

I drink a Bang before work (4-5 days a week) on my way in. Just helps me dial in and get the shift done. I don't do preworkouts anymore but kinda just look at it like that. Taking something for a task. Is it healthy? I'm sure there are better alternatives for sure. Maybe I'll adjust. Just like it for now and got in the habit of the routine. I'm 44 but always had high tolerance to caffeine (love coffee). I've always looked at coffee drinking as healthy though.

I thought Mexico was less lenient on stuff like that but it´s actually more strict. Many supplements high in caffeine are not available here. You can´t get any Yeah Buddy supplements here. Steroids are no legal here either. Those days are long gone. With that said, Oaxaca is in Southern Mexico. Those states along the border, I don´t know what you can get your hands on in those states.

Though I do think energy drinks and similar intakes should be managed like anything else and one the fitness scene tends to be more vulnerable to (pre-workout and often strong reliance on caffeine deep into a cut.) I do suspect there may also have been a bias and a semi-miscommunication just due to how the 'doctors jumped to the red bull conclusion'. It's like my mum asking doctors if her smoking caused my grandmother's breastcancer and she wasn't told no, so to this day 'it's the smoking that caused it, the doctors said so!' even though almost all her aunts have suffered from breast cancer despite the majority being non-smokers. (And this comes up often since I do get any free screening the government allows.)

It's always weird to me when someone looks at a case where someone has worked a hard job for decades that destroyed their body, had a rough life, never considered their diet, never got enough sleep, never had a long enough rest to get rid of the chronic cns fatigue. That person dies and it's always "so unexpected" and often attributed to some random habit they had. What helps people is having knowledge, not just yelling at them to stop drinking something when the rest of their life is shit and they feel like that drink is all that keeps them going.

I’ve been seeing a cardiologist since high school. Let me tell you this. A lot of people have minor cardiac issues and won’t find out until middle age. How many people have an EKG before age 40? You could have a very minor structural or electrical issue. When you are young and healthy, it’s nothing at all. But as you get older, high blood pressure, plaque buildup, etc. could cause it to become a problem. Just keep that in mind. You don’t always know what you don’t know. Treat your heart well. My dad just got on Medicare and he was able to get a stress test done for $300. I thought that was very wise.

I decided just last Sunday that I needed to take a break from caffeine. I was having 3 cups of coffee in the morning and 2 12 oz red bulls every day. Sometimes even drinking sodas or tea. It got to a point that caffeine had no effect on me to the point that I could pound a red bull right before bed and still sleep a full 8 hours. The first 3-4 days I had massive headaches and extreme fatigue around 3-4 pm. It was so bad that I’d pass out on the couch even though I was getting plenty of sleep at night. After the 4th day I started having kidney pain and pissing like crazy. I went from sleeping through the night to waking up 4-6 times a night. I honestly thought maybe I had a kidney or bladder infection but after 3 days it disappeared. I’ve noticed now that I’m no longer crashing through the day. Sometimes I would get really tired on my morning commute but now I’m wide awake. After this little experience I don’t think I’ll ever go back to that routine. Sure I’ll have a coffee every once in while but definitely going to using caffeine in moderation.

Monster drinker here. Can confirm energy drinks do infact make blood thicker. I drink the lo-carb (2 a day) and my blood is THICK. Cardio and plenty of water usually fixes the problem. However, if I slack on either for prolonged period of time I do experience a plethora of problems. Lightheadedness, numbness on extremities, etc. You do notice problems over time. I do also do a "monster fast" every so often as well. If I had to guess why the problems happen, it's the taurine. Didn't have any of these problems when I was a coffee drinker. I know it's bad for me and yata yata but damn do energy drinks taste good. I don't need the energy trust me, but seriously, energy drinks are delicious. Thought I'd share for the nay sayers.

One time I was having a great, heavy squat leg day, I felt so invisible that I decided to drink another scoop of pre-workout which was the worst feeling I've had in my life. I felt like I was on the verge of having a heart attack, and stroke. My heart was beating out of control, my hands were curling up and cramping, sweating profusely, I became dizzy and drowsy on the edge of fainting. Luckily I sat down, drank loads of water and got back to normal luckily. Now I just ingest 400mg of caffeine from all sources in a day, but that's my limit. I learned my lesson, dont abuse caffeine it can have deadly side effects. For reference I'm a 6'3'' 185lb hybrid athlete, and took 2 scoops of 350mg pre-workout.

Well caffeine is a vasoconstrictor not sure what that does to blood vessels in the long term yet a lot of preworkouts that induce a pump using an ingredient such as l-citrulline which is a vasodilator and interesting enough as I've been consuming this stuff a lot during the pandemic and there was period of time where I actually had low blood pressure. One time I had high blood pressure then they tested again 20 min later and it was normal (I do feel caffeine increases anxiety a bit and sometimes those tests will make me anxious). But I also workout everyday and try to eat healthy. Bloodwork every few months and my doctor recommended an at home blood pressure reader so I can have a more thorough understanding of where my BP is at. Then theres all those other ingredients.

A few days late seeing this, but I'm 48 and had been drinking 2-3 energy drinks a day, always sugar free, usually Monster but sometimes Bang since my 20's. Low bodyfat, do gravity sports where energy drinks are huge advertisers and part of the culture. Have been fit and healthy my whole life. *BUT* definitely dependent on the caffeine to function and despite having the sleep hygiene pretty dialed often didn't get great sleep. I also was having increasingly worse acid reflux. This was the tipping point for me because my dad died of throat cancer, also had bad acid reflux and drank tons of soft drinks. Switched to 1 coffee in the morning and on workout days a 50mg caffeine non-carbonated pre-workout. Acid reflux.... gone. Sleep better and no more extreme energy peaks/valleys. Like Derek says in the vid they ARE only one factor, plenty of people drink 4x+ diet soft drinks a day and probably would have similar issues. In my case despite being ahead of the game in terms of lifestyle the energy drinks were certainly doing more harm than good though.

“Panic attacks” are almost a misnomer. Anything that causes your nervous system to go into fight or flight or your body to produce too much cortisol, epinephrine etc whether or not you conscientiously feel nervous or are thinking about anything negative can trigger a panic attack. I went to the doctor and hospital a thousand times as a teenager for this stuff and always said, “I’m not afraid of anything!” but it’s just a hyper vigilant state my body was being put in. Ironically, I did have a heart attack and thought it was just anxiety and almost didn’t go to the hospital. It felt mild in comparison to some of the panic attacks I’ve had. It’s not impossible that you have some underlying issues not related to this but it’s unlikely if they did EKG and blood work and all that. Keep trying if it happens again though. Sometimes the combination of exhaustion, general feeling like shit and stimulants like how you described can put the body into that mode. It sucks man, but try to have faith in the doctors. If you truly don’t believe them, just keep getting tests to rule things out. But be open minded. I’m telling you the human body does some insane things
