He Bought A Mountain in Rural Japan To Build An Open Air Classroom

Welcome to 2023! This is the first ever video that's going to feature something other than Ryunohara. Todd's building a campground/disaster preparedness seminar ground for kids just 30 minutes from Ryunohara in the neighboring municipality, Nakahechi-cho. Volunteers wanted for demolition/renovation works beginning in April!

About Ryunohara: Ryunohara is a kominka cafe nestled deep in the mountains of Ryujinmura, Wakayama Prefecture.
We make our own tea from wild tea plants, and serve it at Ryunohara Kissa, where we also serve stewed meats, fried rice, seasonal pastas and other dishes that showcase ingredients from across the Kishu region. We also serve pesticide-free, chemical fertiliser-free rice that we've grown ourselves, and as many vegetables sourced from within Ryujinmura as possible.
The two buildings on the property are traditionally-built 60 and 120 year-old minka (farmhouses), and there will be another 2 farmhouses that will be renovated into guesthouses in 2023.

Thank you for sharing this video with us along with the others on you channel. I’m really enjoying them! This property is absolutely beautiful and I hope that the children are able to use it to learn off grid survival skills. If I might make one suggestion, I wonder if there are some people learning about the older woodworking, plastering and restoration skills who might be interested in using the house as a learning lab? It’s a true treasure.

I’m a retired RN…you might need me😂😂😂😂. I’ve only been to Osaka. Right now I’ve been looking for my passport. 😮. I moved and can’t find it. 1st video but now I have to catch up! People should bring a tent and camp there and help out too if possible.

Most inspiring channel i follow at the moment: you taught me that you cannot just come to the rural community and only buy an old kominka without becoming part of the community. I will delay the plans and spend some time in a real Japanese village.

That’s great to here, yes please stay in the community you’d like to live with first. The worst thing would be to buy a house then realise that you don’t get along with the people there. A supportive community really does make life a lot better. ☺️

If I had such a forest, I'd try make some pathways in it, try to arrange some nice views and invite neighbours for walks and picnics.

Great video, I really enjoyed the pace and your picking his brain about what he is doing there. I actually think I might be a good candidate to volunteer with Todd. I would need my hand held through the process of relocating to Japan, as well as some time to sell off my things here in the USA, but I am versed in just about everything he needs help with there. Over the next few months my current situation may be changing quite a bit which would allow for me to think in terms of spending a few years building a new foundation somewhere like Wakayama. I will keep him in mind as things here progress. Thanks for the introduction!

A lifetimes supply of firewood - even my log burner is smiling! So much history here - There are incompleted main highways in Japan, unfinished because they couldn't trace who owned the mountains! This is a great opportunity! Best wishes 👍😊

Could be a good idea for your friend to let some of the thinned trees rot and break down in the forest to replenish some of the nutrients lost! Masanobu Fukuoka mindset!

I think that’s what he’s planning to do with most of the thinned trees since they aren’t easy to take out of the property.
