It’s knowing the scales that form the character of the song and then knowing where the song breaks from that, the more modal changes etc the more complicated the piece is to remember. This does look complex so i’m sure it’s a lot of different arpeggios and scales. A good instrumentalist is someone who knows how to get the ‘feel’ and tone right, and then someone who practices and understands music, which is something i’m only just understanding after 10 years playing guitar without music theory. It’s what seperates an amateur pianist from an amateur guitarist, classical composition.

Well thats kind of a requirement for learning pieces like this because you train to 100% know where your hands have to be and how to keep an emotional context fitting to the piece. And just as a tip: there is the 1838 original version of this piece which is like 2.5 times harder than that vesion and way more beautiful in my opinion. But this guy rocked it and could make the old man happy which is what musik is all about in the end.
