Just to add some perspective from a simulator developers perspective. The reason that you get seemingly larger gains on velocidrone (or indeed any simulator of your choice) when you increase frame rates and hz rates is not that you are reducing latency - it kind of is but not really - let me explain. When we fly fpv we are always trying to judge the momentum of the quad, they have momentum they don't just go where you point them immediately. So being able to judge your speed and momentum accurately is very key to flying a tight racing line, because speed is about your lines not about whether you are going really fast (and then blowing out every turn). In order to judge momentum accurately you need smooth motion - the smoother this is the better you get at judging it accurately. This in a nutshell is why fpv simulators are so affected by running higher FPS and higher hz screens. Latency is more of an advantage in FPS games - in that instance it is how quickly you see an enemy come round a corner - so you can track and shoot them, this very much is all about latency and much less about smoothness of motion. I enjoyed the video but knowing what I do about hz rates and fps I just bought the HD Zero setup as soon as it was available - because it is an advantage and it is in fact no different to what happens when you up frame rates in a simulator. Most people will immediately get faster and crash less from running 90hz - whether you are latency sensitive or not.

Thanks a lot for the clarifications. I did not want to blanket say that it will instantly be better for anyone, but more share my experiences, since there always seems to be a group that says latency does not affect them at all, or they cant feel any threshholds above 30-60hz. I think this does clear things up, and we are probably save to go back to the FPV adage that reducing latency in any part of the control or video system is an advantage. I could clearly feel it, and it felt similar to upgrading monitors in Velocidrone, but sounds like it will have an even greater effect IRL. Fantastic notes.

@@JonE5FPV I agree with your perspective that you probably shouldn't just say everyone will be faster, you don't want to be responsible for people buying something then having issues and blaming you for their woes. In velocidrone I've yet to come across anyone who upgraded monitor from 60hz to say 120hz and then said it made no difference. 60hz to 90hz is a smaller hop but it should still apply and make a noticeable difference. I'm kind of expecting that as more people get HD Zero systems it's going to become a common knowledge thing - just like higher hz monitors for FPV simulators is a common knowledge thing today and was a subject of much scepticism when pilots first started talking about it.

This is exactly the way I look at it. Glad to have the knowledge from someone so intimately knowledgeable about the subject and providing some useful insight to the discussion. The 90fps camera has provided me with more confidence in my ability to react and get around the track as smooth as possible, has been more significant than any other change I've ever made in my fpv setup to date. But this is just my personal opinion.

Great review Jon. I knew that if me and Ivan could feel the difference so clearly, you would as well. I got to try flying it in the day time at Oak hallow and man was it even better than at the night spot. Night spot kills HDZero quality on all cams. It REALLY shines during the day. But then again all FPV footage looks like crap at night. Hopefully Limon got Tony Cake and Carl working together to get Tramp Telemetry working on HDZero VTXs and that will cure all your woe's about making a full 100% switch. The benefits of the 90fps cam are hard for anyone to deny. When you need reaction time over all else, this is the way!

Great Video Jon! I think most people will understand that low latency and higher fps is a real advantage in racing. I cannot wait to test my 90 to it's limits this Friday on practice. I will go back to 60 after a few packs and see what happens. But like with monitors, I'm very sensitive to fps and can spot 100hz from 120hz+.

I run the SPRacing H7RF with ELRS V3 on tight builds paired with the Foxeer 60. I too have really been enjoying the performance of the Runcam90. Have also been running the new whoop lite board when not using a race2, and they have been incredibly durable, I did it for the LoLs on one build originally… and after breaking multiple boards, arms, and plates, the whoop lite is still in one piece. I expected it to be the first thing to go :p

100% At launch with collaboration with Fatshark, the system had a lot of issues, and it was unclear if it would survive long enough to evolve enough to find a user base outside of those willing to test beta type gear. But they have come a long way, increased reliability, availability and added new features unique to the system (goggles themselves with de-interlaced improved analog signal), 90 fps mode, etc... happy to be proven wrong, when it means the community wins. Nice work by HDzero for sure.

Man it sucks when you break something that you haven't even gotten to fully enjoy yet. RIP. My condolences...and buy em up as you please. I got months to wait before I'm switching anything over, but all this hype makes me happy I have put off switching from analog this long...it can only be an upgrade to people like me. I hear Bardwell is "considering" switching. It makes me wonder how many other digital pilots feel like they're losing if they switch for the lower latency. Not jabbing at anyone, I have almost switched to DJI twice & it's thoughts of "what if" on my behalf. I kinda like the blockiness over the lines, static & waves of analog too. I gotta fly it.

Good information and review. So your are saying the 90 is worth it over the 60?..well that stinks. I have 4 of the foxeer v2 cams still new in box and a couple of the v1's where I thought about switching to HDZ for racing last year but never did. I hate the thought of dropping $65 a cam for racing. Painful, but I need anything I can to help my reaction time, haha. Interesting info about the Foxeer Lollipop on the HDZ, I use it on almost all of my builds because it does good enough for the average track. But I hate the HDZ rainbow so I guess I'll have to use my 533 Axii's for the HDZ builds ( if I ever get myself to build them). Goggles are ordered though to force myself to build them.
