    This was an excellent video! I really enjoyed watching it, you covered a number of different use cases and I appreciated you showing the maps with line of sight to make it easy to contextualize. Also, I'm totally going to steal that 3" cinewhoop mounting idea. I didn't even think to look at mine to see if it had 30x30 mount holes, but sure enough....

    Thank you, I wanted to clearly show off the capabilities of this new VTX in various tests, range is easy, but penetration can be tricky. I hope more people start doing a similar map concept, because it’s often hard to really know how far or how many objects are being penetrated while watching a video. Regarding the cinewhoop, another viewer suggested making intake ducts on the top which i liked, but then took it a bit further in my head and thought “what if you made intakes on the bottoms and exhausts on the top to effectively use the prop pressure to cool the VTX?” Hmm… that way travel speed wouldn’t matter. Feel free to use any of these ideas, I don’t know if I’ll have time in the near future to attempt this, but would love to see the concept. Keep up the great work on your videos as well, you’re excellent at presenting and showcasing things in a clear professional manner. Cheers!

    Absolutely, analog still performs as good if not slightly better. The advantage to digital is simply that you have a bit more resolution and details which helps during heavy breakup. Honestly I still trust analog a bit more because I spent so much time with it and it’s simple radio transmission. BUT, I have flown analog since getting HDZero… thanks for watching and commenting, this was a lot of effort but making these episodes is another passion hobby. Stay tuned and cheers!

    For mounting a vtx like that, with a large flat smooth heatsink, you could just use a little thermal adhesive or thermal tape and mount it right to the carbon. Some of the TBS vtx manuals used to recommend always mounting against carbon. The carbon acts as an even bigger heatsink. Great review

  • @GiantAntCowboy

    @@GiantAntCowboy yeah if it's a thin piece with lots of holes I might space it a little bit from the carbon and count on airflow. But if it's at least 50% carbon, at the interface, and you can easily apply thermal paste or tape I'd bet it'd work better. And the really nice thing is when you land upside down in some bushes that relying on carbon still helps. Even a thin piece of carbon can soak up a lot of heat. I'd love to see a video comparison if you do ever end up trying it out.

I’m surprised you don’t have a diversity receiver in that Chimera for the LR flying you’re doing, I couldn’t be without mine for the peace of mind it gives me at range, as we already have enough things to worry about 😅 With the 8Ah li-ion at least you don’t need to worry about not making it back now 😊 I noticed in the video description you use quite low pitched props(3.5 from memory)and wondered whether you had tried any of the higher pitch for LR, especially with the higher weight packs. I use either the Dal7056c, or more recently I’ve been using the HQ 7x4.5x3(but allegedly higher pitch than the numbers suggest 🤔)glass reinforced nylon, which do seem equally as good for lower throttle control and speed.

    Thank you Kevin, appreciate the kind words! Yes, diversity would be smart.., when I built this quad I just used a spare nano RX, but probably should just install a Diversity RX. I never had these issues before and think I’ve discovered the VTX is causing interference with the CRSF RX, but still testing to confirm. Yes, 8Ah Li-ion is a “full tank of gas”, gonna be testing some 5s and 6s packs as well soon to determine the best options for specific flight paths. Regarding props I am using these HQ 3.5 props, I haven’t thought about running higher pitch, but do often feel some extra thrust would be beneficial… so I’ll try to order the props you suggest here and let you know how they work. Thanks for watching, commenting and sharing some tips. Appreciate the feedback, cheers!

    Once again.. another very nice production. You do very good work. Thanks for sharing. A couple of observations: First: I noticed that when at range comparing the Dual Stack 500 to the Freestyle 1W, that the image was pretty darn similar. When at range both were doing well with those helicals, as expected. My Dual stack I measured its average output with the IRC meter when set at 500 and I discovered it was actually outputting only 250mw avg.. I wonder if yours is outputting at the same power too? When I had my hands on the new VTX for a bit and was testing it it measured around 1W average output. Close to advertised. So... what I'm getting at is in reality the Freestyle is likely outputting about 4x the power of the dual stack. The real benefit of the Freestyle vtx appears to be the trees penetration. That 4x more power comes into play when your passing behind trees. Second: your new 7 inch sure draws ALOT of amps when going up the mountain. Ouch. My 7in on a similar flight is drawing 15-20amps or 30 max. Whats your battery packs total weight? Thanks again!

  • @GiantAntCowboy

    @GiantAntCowboy

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Mike, appreciate the compliments and glad you enjoyed the video. - Good observations, I unfortunately don’t have a power meter to test and confirm the outputs but agree for range, especially below 7km, the extra power isn’t so important. As I mention in the video it’s more like an improved confidence thing rather than absolute performance gain. - Penetration on the other hand is where that extra power comes in handy, you can see a pretty significant difference there! Which is to be expected. I’d like to get a power meter but have a hard time finding one in Norway/Europe, I’ll have to look again. - Yea I’m really blasting those Amps sure. I’m cruising uphill between 70-80kph (45-50mph), and the pack is a 8000mAh 4s2p pack, so it’s heavy and at 4s requires extra amps to cruise like this. AUW with GoPro is like 1380g. I’ll be testing some 5s and 6s configurations soon. Note: I did manage a 24minute flight with this 4s2p pack a few weeks ago and still had 900mAh left. That was cool, but was mostly flat gentle cruising while testing some things. Anyway, thanks again, looking forward to your next video. Did you order a new 1W?

My next build, when ever that is, will be with HDZ. It's just such a cool system, and a good enough competitor to DJI. Yea, one thing to mention is HDZero is not as Plug-and-play as DJI. Sometimes you have to tinker with things or update firmware to make get the best performance. This is simply because it’s a new system that from a smaller company that is still evolving. However, as you see here it can perform very well and is a great option for many people, especially hobbyists that like to tinker and modify things! I upgraded from analog and love it. Pro tips for crossfire: I'm sure you know this but always match polarization on tx and rx antennas (vertical / horizontal) ENDS OF IMMORTAL Ts ARE NULL ZONES. Don't point them at yourself. Easy way to avoid this is to mount it vertically at the same angle that your gopro or fpv cam is at, or ideally use diversity with a horizontal and a vertical. Also - try using a Moxon or a Diamond on the tx if you aren't already. Definitely helps to stabilize the LQ a bit when you're out far. I'd lock power output to 250mw or 500mw too. Cool testing with HDZero, maybe I should give it a try!

    Thanks for watching and for the solid comment, all great info! It’s weird in my previous build I always ran two immortal T antennas mounted horizontally and never had issues. With my new build flying the exact same routes I’m getting worse signal (RX Loss!) with horizontal mounting. Not sure if this is due to the much thicker carbon fiber or something related to the 1W output power from the new VTX. I have since vertically oriented both antennas and upgraded to a Diamond antenna, which did improve things and eliminated that RXLoss signal on that flight path. Eventually I should upgrade to a diversity RX with a Bardpole antenna. I’m running the CRSF TX at 1W so it shouldn’t have problems at 6-7km with clear LOS. I’ll be testing more this spring, but at least it’s improved from my initial tests. I’ll be sharing a video about this soon. Thanks for watching and the support, cheers!

    How do you have your GPS mounted? I've been having a hard time getting it to lock when the freestyle VTX is powered

  • @GiantAntCowboy

    @GiantAntCowboy

    2 жыл бұрын

    So yea, I had issues with mine as well, and tried several mounting options, but what actually fixed it was so simple and strange: - Go into the Ports Tab in BF, go to the GPS UART row, and set Sensor Input to Auto. Then try it again and let me know. For some reason this worked for me and another guy I just chatted with recently... - Another thing I'd suggest is if the UARTs for the VTX and GPS are very close, switch one of them to a different UART. (I just did this last night, and during a test flight this morning seemed to get more satellites and faster.) * I think the Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from the VTX power is the source of many problems and not actually the Radio Signal Transmission. - Last but not least, make sure all your wires are tightly twisted. Twisting wires (specifically + / -) really helps block interference/noise. Let me know if any of these suggestions help, I know the struggle, when I first started using this VTX I'd barely get 5 sats, then they'd drop to 0 randomly, and only sometimes come back... not super confidence-inspiring when your several KM (miles) away... Cheers!

    I'm new to drones and I'm trying to decide which eco-system to use between DJI, Walksnail and HDZero. I plan to fly micros, cinewhoops and exploration drones. Maybe even some freestyle at some point. What eco-system do you suggest? I like the visuals of DJI but I hate the limitations and variety. I don't like that Walksnail has no HDMI input, like the DJI. Should I wait for the new ZDZero goggles? Thanks! :)

  • @GiantAntCowboy

    Full Disclosure: Most my experience is with analog and HDZero. I’m expecting a Beta set of HDZero goggles to arrive in the next few weeks, and also a WalkSnail VRX. Your question doesn’t have an perfect/easy answer… especially now a days. - HDZero is great because resolution and latency are consistent and don’t change with signal. HDZero is also a simple system which doesn’t require binding, like DJI/WS, and means you can share your video feed with unlimited people. That’s fun with friends or missions with co-pilots. Also since HDzero doesn’t “bind”, it doesn’t “un-bind” when you lose signal, this is especially important when doing longer range mountain surfing stuff like I enjoy. - DJI has the best video quality, especially now with the New O3 unit which looks unbelievable. If you chose DJI however that’s all you can use... - WalkSnail is still evolving but currently seems to work great and has really nice image when signal is strong. The image quality for both DJI and WalkSnail drops very quickly when signal gets weak… - Since DJI/WS are more complex systems that can repair the image, the video quality, range, and penetration is generally considered better than HDZero. • My plan is to use the New HDZero goggles with both HDZero and Walksnail, this setup gives a lot of flexibility. • DJI however is a really great system that works extremely well but won’t work with micros and tiny whoops at the moment. * Long answer, but hopefully insightful. I’ll be testing and sharing my thoughts on the HDZero Goggles and the WalkSnail system in the coming weeks, so stay tuned if interested. Thanks for watching, cheers!

    What the difference between the usual flat patches, like "triple feed" or "mapple" and spiral antennas that you have in the video?

  • @GiantAntCowboy

    @GiantAntCowboy

    2 жыл бұрын

    Here’s a quick overview: - Helical (spiral) antennas provide better range and penetration but have a narrow field-of-view (FOV) and must be aimed more accurately for the best signal. This is pretty easy when under 5km. The longer the spiral the higher gain, range and penetration but with a narrower FOV. - Patch antennas generally have less range and penetration but have a much wider FOV and so require less precise aiming. However patch antennas can offer similar range performance when made very large/wide. EX: There’s a Triple Feed patch I see often that has great range but is the size of a “dinner plate”. Summary: To increase gain, Helical antennas get longer where as patch antennas get wider. Helicals are very cheap and easy to make, which is why I use them a lot. Check out my DIY video if curious: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hodoyLuchJaqdag.html Let me know if you have questions, cheers!

Each component is insulated and grounded as well. Normally I can lock onto 12-15 satellites while using the original analog setup. Now, with the HD Zero vtx, I can get 5-8 sats running at 25mw. - For the VTX (drone) you’ll want a decent Omni antenna, ex: TrueRC Singularity or OCP, and for maximum range this should be mounted high above the quad, away from the carbon fiber and batteries. - For maximum range with your goggles you’ll want a high gain directional antenna. Ex: TrueRC X2-Air or a helical antenna like I have, which can be made, or purchase, for pretty cheap usually. But what goggle antennas you choose really depends on how you’ll fly, the example I gave are best for long-range (5km+) directly out in front of you. Hope that helps, cheers!

    In the last “cinematic” clip I’m using 4k30 4:3, with an ND8 and I believe the shutter was 1/120 to expose for the bright snow. (Ideally you’d use a darker ND filter and lower shutter speed… but work with what you have.) Snow and water can be especially tricky to expose for and easily get blown out which ruins the shot in my opinion. I’ll be doing a “GoPro Tips” episode soon, most of which has been covered a dozen times… but I’ve learned a couple things that could be useful to some.
