Another really great instructive video James! It’s hard to believe you have only 423 followers (including myself). Unfortunately, I guess most people fall victim to all the click-bait videos by these other fools on KZread. When I’m out shooting landscapes, I always bracket because it doesn’t cost anything and you always have the option to create an HDR from multiple photos if needed.

Thanks Guy! I'm a complete novice when it comes to promoting my channel other than by KZread's algorithms. That's why it's so important to like and subscribe - I actually have a play list that will just play all (or most) of my videos in sequence so you could just click it and head to bed with the volume down. 🙂 I'd love to know the secret to building a base of subscribers faster!

@@JamesParkerPhotography I’ve been a photographer for nearly 50 years (my first professional camera was the Nikon F2), so I have a pretty good understanding of technique and the capabilities/limitations of even the top digital cameras. I’m currently shooting with the Nikon Z9. Whenever I’m out shooting landscapes with friends, I always emphasize the importance of bracketing, even if you’ve not going to use all of the exposures. It’s just so refreshing to see someone on KZread making really quality videos.

Yeah I see a difference. But same time I feel depending on use case. If just sightseeing and general purpose …. The space savings on the single Raw file with modern cameras that can do 12-15 stops dynamic range … vs having 3-5 shots …. But yes. For a client printed like you said. Better to bracket.

Yes - it totally depends on usage. Posting to facebook? Doesn't matter. Printing a large print or if you want the very best quality? Then definitely bracket as needed.

Would you ever suggest shooting in the HDR setting in camera or no since you can only shoot JPEGs with the in-camera HDR?

Amber - No. I wouldn't recommend shooting with the camera's built in HDR mode. You can control the result exactly the way you want in post VS taking what the camera comes up with.

I shoot RAW BUT for sunsets/rises and blue hour I always bracket 5 @ +/- 2 ev. If the sun is above the horizon you get a smaller sun instead of a large blown out sun. Also say on a beach with driftwood you get the darkside of foreground driftwood bright as well as the sky is full of detail. If you do moon shots you will get a focused moon and a bright foreground without having to blend a moon in in Ps. just use SS/ISO = 125 and center shot at .5 seconds and f at 8 to 11 for moon focus. HDR was used years ago to get indoor shots with clear and in focus outdoor detail. also good for wildlife to get detail of feathers or animal hair on bright days. bottom line you have the five shots and you can use all or one for you can not go back a minute or two to retake the shot. Sony cameras let you do 5 @ +/- 3EV only a few programs can manage that 3EV separation, Photomatix is great if also movement (like the moon), Dxo that has Nik collection HDR Efex. just have fun.

I'm not sure I follow your question. In my instance, I did use RAW files to generate the single HDR file, which was a DNG (A Digital Negative - Adobe's version of a RAW file).

​@@JamesParkerPhotography Thanks for the prompt answer. I am a CG Artist, I make photo-realistic renders of 3D scenes. I am trying to figure out what color profile to associate with the HDRi file I am using to light my scene in my 3D rendering package. I understand that HDRi are linear file - not gamma encoded - but I am trying to figure out what color space HDRi files are actually referencing. There is an option to associate such file to a 'RAW' file, or say 'Linear sRGB', and I am at a loss as to whether HDRi images of real-world scenes would be considered RAW. I hope that makes sense.

@@wordsshackles441 - Color profiles in photography for RAW files are based on the camera settings. For my Sony, I can shoot in sRGB or Abobe RGB. I always select Adone RGB to give me the largest color space. I hope this helps.

If your camera combines the images for you, then don’t use that. I do have the camera take three or five images in a row and automatically adjust the exposure. I then combine those in Lightroom or Photoshop.

@11'41" did you source your 5-file HDR exercise from JPG or RAW files? I presume RAW. But I'd like to know which you used.

Thanks! They are 5 RAW files that were merged to a single DNG file in Lightroom.
