HDO Pads vs SDO Pads - What's the Difference?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

When polishing with a long or a short stroke orbital polisher, do you know when the HDO or SDO pads are most suitable, and why? Kelly breaks down the differences between the two popular pad types and where they will provide the most efficient paint correction. #HDOPads #SDOPads

    We did have 6mm and 19mm pre 2010 but one was part sander part polisher and the other being an accessory to fit onto a grinder or rotary polisher. No one does educational videos as well as you kelly. World class.

    Cutting with 5" LC Low Lint Prewash Knitted Lambswool which has 3/8 Foam Interface on the rotary, polishing with 5" HDO Orange on 8 mm forced rotation and getting into the tighter spots with LC 3" Purple Foamed Wool. This combination is killer, on 2 steps and especially hard clears, especially BMW / Mercedes. I'm a big fan of the 5" / 3" Orange Force pads as well, that thickness allows me to use the edge of the pad and reach body lines that are difficult to get the on other shaped pads. Thanks Lake Country your quality of pads are the best on the market. SUBSCRIBED !

    I've spent the weekend working with the LC Manufacturing microfibre pads. Used a 15mm, 8mm and 9mm 'mini'. A combo of the blue cutting MF and the black polishing. I used 5" pads on the 15mm machine, 3" pads on the 8mm and 1" on the mini. How does that translate to this video? I got great results with them all. Or are MF pads different as they are much thinner so get less flex?

  • @LakeCountryManufacturing

    Microfiber pads have a thinner foam interface typically, so flex is not really an issue regardless of the orbit.

    Hi at the 2:15 mark of the video, you said it would wear down the pad quicker, referring to the HDO pad u were holding. So do u mean the HDO which is more than double the price of the SDO pads here in Australia, are going to wear out faster than SDO? I'm confused. Ive been using SDO pads on a 15mm 5" and 3" polisher and theyve been working fine so far. Havent got any HDO pads to compare at this point. But at double the price will the HDO last twice as long under the same conditions? Thx in advance

  • @LakeCountryManufacturing

    @LakeCountryManufacturing

    2 жыл бұрын

    By reducing the internal flexing, the HDO design will do a better job of keeping the operational foam (the coloured bit) working at its best for longer. It counters the extra stresses caused by larger throw orbits, while simultaneously taking greater advantage of them. As you've found, SDO pads will work on a 15mm orbit - but you'll notice HDO pads feel and behave quite different, with increased control and improved operational efficiency (ie. they get the job done better, and quicker). As a user myself, HDO is my go-to over SDO every time. They're more expensive to buy, but I find the benefits outweigh that price difference comfortably. Try one and let us know what you think?

    Every day's a learning day.... Now I know, I can apply this into future works 15mm max for me.... dropping down to 8 and 3 on the ibrid nano and flex pxe80 Would this HDO and SDO distinction be applicable to forced rotation machines as well as random orbit DA?

  • @LakeCountryManufacturing

    @LakeCountryManufacturing

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes :) HDO pads are great but, as the video explains, the benefits are more noticeable on larger throw orbital machines. That's not to say there's any technical downside to using an HDO pad on a smaller throw machine - if you just like the look and feel of them, carry on! But the SDO pads use the same foam on the face, and the simpler construction means they are cheaper to buy.

    I guess my thing is unless there is some very specific performance reason you want an SDO, the HDO seems to be more versatile, as it can be used on all machines just fine. I'd rather buy a single range of pads that all my machines can use, rather than double the pads to split between them. Though I'm mainly a DIY detailer and not a pro with heavy volume.

  • @LakeCountryManufacturing

    @LakeCountryManufacturing

    I believe that polisher is an 8mm throw, so the SDO will be just fine. However, many users actually just prefer the feel of the HDO pads outright (regardless of the throw of the tool) so it may be worth trying both designs - we'd love to know which version you get on with best!

    The HDO line is also suitable for forced dual-action polishers in exactly the same way :) As for the advantages of CCS - kzread.info/dash/bejne/eqiTt9Wzpq-oYMo.html One thing also not mentioned often enough is that the CCS pockets are closed cell, whereas the rest of the pad face is open cell. This means that some of your fresh compound or polish will be retained 'undiminished' on the pad face for longer, allowing you to do longer passes and improve your workflow efficiency - you can literally carry out a pass, give the pad a quick squeeze onto the panel, and see that more fresh compound has been released. It's a genuinely useful trick / hack / technique :)

    The thin Purple Foamed Wool pads - recommended for use on orbital polishers - are best used in heavy cutting situations. You'll remove defects more quickly, but need additional stages of refinement after.

  • @angrycabbie1
    @angrycabbie12 жыл бұрын

    Can't really answer that. As each throw has a specific purpose. 21mm for extremely large areas or vehicles to cut down speed. 15mm is essentially the go to, being an all around effective cut and finish. And 8 mm is for that precise cut. A particular area. 12mm is for those 3 inch areas that you just need to be efficient on. So if I pack a bag. Its would be my 15mm and 12mm

HDO's are priced like they have gold flake in them. lol I do have some HDO"s they make the job quicker but the SDO's were fine before the HDO was created so don't think you have to buy the HDO bc you have a long throw, this guy is a business man so of course he is trying to sell the most expensive pad they have. SDO's work just fine. Other companies don't have that extra layer in there pads and they are fine.
