    Server drives usually use the same amount of platters. Just with a different way of storing data to get as much on there as possible.

    @@yako0006 That's not actually true except in the case of newer "SMR" drives, which may or may not be used in servers. High capacity drives really do just add more platters and heads.

    Most likely at 10,000 RPMs, commercial environments used these types of drives before magnetic storage became reliable for backups and flash storage became reliable for everything else

    Depending on the the hdd it may be spinning at the same rpm as a jet engine, since this one has multiple plates its going to be considerably louder than a normal single plate hdd, hence the jet engine noises

    I don't think they'll be fazed out soon. Although SSDs are getting cheaper, HDDs are still the best way to store a lot of data on the cheap. Until the benefits of SSDs completely outweight those of having an HDD for consumers , they'll be widely used. The way I see SSDs is to use them as boot drives and to store the most important/the most used software. Everything else - be it images, audio, video, etc - stays on the HDD.

    They could make slow and cheap ssd's to replace harddicks but these two asshole companies called seagate and western digital are spending money on hdd technology and for that reason they are here to stay for at least a decade regardless how it hurts economy, electricity and overall technological improvements in the long run.

    I found a scrap computer at savers for like $5. It was one of those old dell computers often used in schools. it was missing a hard drive, but it still sounded exactly like this.

    Man, had been a long time since I last heard this sound, I was like 10 when we got a new computer, the old one was just a big grey box, a old white keybored with a very bad mouse and a fatscreen, these curved ones. Hearing this sound brings back memories how it was at that time, I had pretty much no clue how a computer worked. But I would have really loved to experience the expansion of the internet from the beginning.

    This may be a SAS server HDD. It sounds like the rotation rate is 10K RPMs rather than quieter consumer ones (5400/7200 RPM)
