Yes eye opening. Now I have more aluminum scrap for the recyclers. I hope the ceramic disks fair better.

I recover all values from HD platters/CDs/CD rom/Blue Ray with a profit! Removal of the metal coating on HD platters is done electrolytic, without any expensive acid, in a Hypochlorite Cell (free electricity from old used solar cells). The process takes less than 1 minute. The aluminium remains unaffected and is sold afterwards. Older HD platters indeed contain a bit of PMs, but newer ones contain very little. The Platinum layer is usually only around 10 nanometer thick. Most of the CDs contain a little Silver. However, for both HD platters and CDs the main yield is Nickel, which is worth 2½ times more than copper! The other metals are just an added bonus. Nickel is recovered by electrowinning. Afterwards, all liquid from the rest of the solution is distilled off (without any cost, utilizing the excess heat from my four pyrolysis units). The residue is stored until enough is accumulated for later recovery of primarily cobalt. Aside from Ni and Co, other metals present are Ti, Cr, and the more interesting ones: Ta, Ru, and Pt. Be aware that the small 2½" platters (from fx. lap-tops) are made of glass so they must be processed with acid. The consumption of acid is very minimal. The reason amateurs are misled to believe that no valuable metals can be found in HD platters and CDs, is that these metals are present in such a low concentration in the liquid that the primitive testing with stannous seems to show nothing at first glance. The color change is barely visible, or not visible at all, with the naked eye. You must concentrate the liquid solution to get a real indication. By the way, the green color of the solution (shown at the end of this video) is a clear visual indication that Nickel is present.

I'm pretty sure the platinum content depends entirely on the manufacturer.

Hi, just came across one of your videos, so I decided to check out your channel, seems how we share a similar hobby, or interest. I admit, I didn't have time to watch the whole video yet, but I wanted to ask you… Exactly what kind if “discs”, are being used in this video? Because they sure do not resemble any of the “disc” variations, that are available or accessible to the general public. I apologize in advance, if you have answered this question in the video itself, just wanted to be honest and hope you would be so kind as to tell me, til I have the opportunity to continue watching this video, and I am pretty sure I will find a few more worth watching! Thank you for your time and sharing your knowledge, to those who don't have the resources or support to do it themselves! I appreciate you!

Thanks for checking out the video! The "discs" in the video are actually HDD platters, which are not commonly accessible to the general public. They are from hard drives and don't contain any precious metal recovery process. Feel free to continue watching, and if you have any more questions, I'm here to help! Thanks for your understanding and support.

I don't have hardrives to collect (not many computers throughout my life). Its great information to know that Iron, Cobalt and Nickel are the metal coatings on harddisk platters. Someone says silver is in CDs and DVDs, though. I'll have to see how much. I do have CD music and many DVDs. If there becomes alot in grams of silver of probably owning 500+ DVD movies and 30+ music artists on CD I'll probably consider extracting maybe but most likely won't because I don't collect electronics for precious metals vs me saving the small amount of gold (in my like 10 old cellphones) and silver also in wherever they are said to be (like in contact switches).

I think silver on CDs might be really old first gen CDs, so it may not be worth while to explore a silver extraction, as a book I had from the 90's said they were aluminum. With that said, there are better silver sources like solder and I heard some motor and generator brushes use a silver alloy.
