Marteen Lake When english speakers try to pronounce swedish words they are usually impossible to understand. Like when Stephen Fry tried to say Surströmming on QI. Better to usee whatever word you would call it in english unless there really isnt an english word. Gravad Lax for example means Burried Salmon in english but if they called it that maybe it wouldnt sell so well. Same when swedish people spell the name Kevin, Cewin how the hell is that supposed to be pronounced?

rimmersbryggeri Im not talking about translations, im talking about when you get a word and read it out how it is. But yea probably a few words might sound indistiguishable but if people speak english they still have their accent not put on ours, english speaking people are literal the only ones that do it. im sure in a resturant in England it would not be a problem at all not pronoucing in the accent.

Not usually but thsi dish would not be served in england though. It's not even served in most of sweden. But I think these things are a little bit like when news people interview burmese people and the news people call in myanmar while the burmese people call it Burma since that's its name in english. I think people should say words as they say them translitterated to local pronounciation but I guiess that's a problem when we use the same alphabet but extended with letters you don't have. Personally I always say the number on the menu in restaurants because that's what the number is for.

+Marteen Lake English speaking people are not the only ones who do it, some of my fellow Serbians (mostly girls) tend to pronounce English words with a full on poncey accent and it annoys me - and I studied English linguistics and literature at the University! I have a pretty distinct British accent, when I speak whole sentences you might mistake me for a Brit, but when English words are interjected into Serbian I kind of adapt it to the rest of the sentence, because an over the top accent just sounds unnatural and fake. My point is - it's a worldwide thing and it solely depends on a person''s amount of cringeworthy ponceyness.

There was a series of American Express commercials in America in the 70s that featured people who weren't necessarily celebrities but were somewhat well known, people who you might have known their name, but wouldn't have recognized on the street. XD Not even sure if she was born in the UK herself or if they moved there when she was little, but she talks about her Italian family and their traditions a lot in the show. I am guessing it would be more weird and fake for her to put on a British accent for Italian words, when she is bilingual. :P

  • @doesntmatter9996

It is Chinese. 中国 is the Chinese for China (People’s Republic of). The two countries somehow share the same currency symbol, as they do some Kanji, but other than that they are quite easy to tell apart if you are pedantic. In this case, even if you haven’t done much reading in either language, the telltale sign is the difference between the kanji Chinese Yuan 元 and the Japanese Yen 円 after the numerical amount. Whatever your opinions about it are, this is still the BBC. They don’t have a perfect record on portraying either culture or language, but rest assured they can afford access to researchers who actually have the knowledge, instead of assuming they do.

Jocelyn Atkinson Same. My daughter is 8 years old now, but went to a few when she was a baby/toddler and if I have anymore kids, I definitely won't be going again. Most of the other moms are exactly as she described -- annoying and self important. "What, your baby hasn't rolled over, yet? Mine did last week all by himself." Yeah, that's probably because your baby is two months older than mine, you saggy, shriveled uterus.

As an American I agree with Cilla. There are some down to earth friendly celebrities who don’t expect special treatment at all, and those are the folks I like. The ones who think they deserve to have their backsides kissed simply because they’re famous and have used the, “do you know who I am?” line are absolutely horrendous. Yet, people keep feeding their egos and they just get worse. I absolutely understand looking up to someone if they’ve accomplished something that you really admire or think is great, but I’m appalled that the public puts celebrities on pedestals simply because they’re famous. I wish it would stop.

Back when dinosaurs ruled the earth I worked the door on a popular nightclub. One night a famous footballer waltzed past the line and demanded entry. I said "No, you pushed in, and you don't meet the dress code." Of course the "don't you know who I am?" followed. I said "haven't a clue. even if I did you still aren't coming in" (I knew exactly who he was) I'm a big guy, he looked me up and down and sulked off with his entourage. The funniest part was the irate crowd he'd pushed in front of, some of the lads near the front had heard the who conversation and started chanting at him "Who are ya? Who are ya?" the rest promptly joined in. One of the lads said "you know that was XXXXXXX?" I grinned and said "Yes I know"

No it's because, in English, 2-syllable nouns are usually stressed on the 1st syllable but, in French, 2-syllable nouns are usually stressed on the 2nd syllable. As French words are adopted into the English language, the undergo a stress shift from 2nd to 1st. The reverse is true of French speakers pronouncing English 2-syllable nouns, of course . So you get 'le parKING' and 'le buisNESS'.
