Here's a great quote from Saints coach Tom Fears on Sonny, after the redhead bombed the Saints for Vince Lombardi's 1st win as Redskin coach: "Sure, there's a way to stop Sonny Jurgensen, but how the heck can you get a rifle into the stadium? There's no way to defend against the perfect pass and Jurgensen just wasn't going to miss today. He hit receivers with people hanging on his arms. He hit them while falling down. The only way we could have stopped him would have been to shoot him."

As a Redskin fan, I love Sonny, my fav player and Sam too... They have been part of the Redskins play-by-play team on radio for many years.. few QB's could bring a team and play the clock under two mintues like Sonny # 9

if only lombardi had been more attentive to his health, the doctors probably would have caught the cancer before it was too late. would have special to see him coach sonny for another couple of years to a championship.

Washington would have won a championship under Lombardi. It was clear to see that they had talent, but not the coaching/leadership needed. I mean, George Allen took the core of guys Lombardi inherited and with a little roster turnover, got them to the Super Bowl two years after Lombardi passed.

good observation. the story of the Redskins back then demonstrates how the right coach can turn things around.

Then Redskins owner Edward Bennett Williams made Lombardi an offer he couldn't refuse and something he couldn't get with the Packers. He gave Lombardi some shares of ownership with Washington. Green Bay is the only fan owned team in the NFL and is run like a big mutual fund.

Sonny needed a good ass kicking hell he was out every night party party party. In pro sports today theres always got to be a rebuilding plan. That word did not exist to Vince. Goes back to his coaching even in prep schools. George Allen was the same the future is now. The fans deserve to see winning ball for their hard earned dollar. Could he coach in todays millionare salary league run by the NFLPA? Many say no but my money would be on Vince. He could make chicken soup out of chiken shit.

I was thinking that. Its exactly the opposite. Starr said he was "raising his voice" to him and Starr asked to talk to him and told him that he was going to ream him out to do it in the privacy of his office because he can't lead if Lombardi is always cutting him in front of the men. He never raised his voice at him again

@@c.l.freeman7654 Lombardi is what I call a "smart" screamer. He learned pretty quickly which players he could scream at and which players he had to be a little more gentle with. The myth of course is that he was a screamer all the time but he picked aand chose his spots and knew who could take(And sometimes needed) his tounge lashings and who he had to be a little more careful with.
