Haydn: Symphony No. 101 in D major "The Clock" (with Score)

Музыка

Franz Joseph Haydn:
Symphony No. 101 in D major, Hob. I/101 "The Clock" (with Score)
Composed: 1794
Conductor: Robin Ticciati
Orchestra: Scottish Chamber Orchestra
00:00 1. Adagio - Presto (D major)
08:01 2. Andante (G major)
14:25 3. Minuet: Allegretto - Trio (D major)
22:02 4. Finale: Vivace (D major)
The Symphony No. 101 in D major (Hoboken 1/101) is the ninth of the twelve London symphonies written by Joseph Haydn. It is popularly known as The Clock because of the "ticking" rhythm throughout the second movement.
Haydn completed the symphony in 1793 or 1794. He wrote it for the second of his two visits to London. Having heard one of his symphonies played in London with an orchestra of 300-strong, his Clock Symphony has that large scale grandeur written in it. On 3 March 1794, the work was premiered with an orchestra of 60 personally gathered by Haydn's colleague and friend Johann Peter Salomon, who also acted as concertmaster, in the Hanover Square Rooms, as part of a concert series featuring Haydn's work organized by Salomon; a second performance took place a week later.

Really a lively and powerful performance, with the right pacing in all the 4 Movs (not so obvious...). Congratulations to this director and to this orchestra!

In the long run I will select haydn's symphonies to listen as I am about to leave the world. Neither mozart, beethoven, brahms, bruckner nor mahler. Only Haydn will do

Gotta admit, Haydn’s music is awesome. But i still kinda prefer Mahler (and yes i know that opinions based but still)

The played timpani differs from the score. Listen to 3:14. Single timpani stroke on the second and third measure of the page. In the score, in the 4th and 5th measures of that page the timpani should be playing steady 8th notes. But in the performance, the timpani is just repeating the single stroke notes from measures 2 and 3 on that page. I believe that I hear additional changes to the timpani part. Make me curious as to whether changes were made at the time of composition? Or publishing? I wonder.

I think the timpani is playing all six notes in measures 4 and 5, but the last five notes of each measure are comparatively soft and hard to hear. Measure 5 is a little easier to hear than measure 4.

@@jsh31425 You may be right. Perhaps some of the notes are too soft to hear. And that may be due to the recording.

The timpanist has taken many liberties in this recording, but they are playing all 6 notes.

Isn't the Menuetto too fast? The tempo indication is Allegretto. This sounds Allegro, almost as if it is in 1 beat to the bar.

This Symphony has a D Minor introduction, despite being called a D Major symphony, which I consider to be the weirdest thing that Joseph Haydn did. But still, I like the second movement.
