Hay Day - Valley Baling

We double it up with the 7600 and 8235R to make hay at the valley! Yields are less than half at this point last year.

CURRENT SCHEDULE
Expect a new video every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZread channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

    Your belt twisting might be annoying, but that's nothing, back in the 80s our JD round baler was always breaking belts, so much so we always carried a spare in the cab. I remember watching many of them break and grandpa got so mad at so many of them, he ended up trading it in for a New Holland chain/bar bailer. But i remember it ended up being a pain too, it had an oil tank to lube the chain every time the gate opened to eject. We collected a lot of used oil to recycle onto it. It was kinda nice, that you didn't have to back up to eject, it had a spring loaded deal that rolled the bale far enough away from the gate. But eventually we found the chain links would crack, luckily never broke all the way thru, but still you were down for a long time to replace the links. Just something else to keep on top of on the farm. TWISTED BELTS? PUHLEEEEESE! 😂

    Ryan! Go to your dealer and tell them you want a baler gate take up roller kit. it sits at the very top of the gate and when you dump a bale it’ll keep more tension on the belts. It won’t take all of it out but it will be significant. And that should help your problem. Also be sure to look at the belt guides at the top of the baler. They’ll obviously have wear but if there are deep grooves ground into them just go ahead and replace them. May not help but it won’t hurt. Flipping belts are no fun

    In my opinion the 79 is a better fit for the rake than the 46 because he has said in past videos that the rake will push the 46 around and with 79 having more weight it's probably the better option plus the 46 and the mower go together perfectly.

    I might have missed an explanation in another video, but why don't you use the bale kicker on baler? Seems like alot of shifting and clutching. We put a couple thousand bales a year on our 2 balers and my left knee cried inside everytime i watched you backing up.

    @CurrentChoices Easier to gather the bales if they're all rolled to the bottom of the hills haha. That is one thing I've never liked about John deere balers, kicker is more like bale launcher. Vermeer is much gentler on bales but on good hills the bales still will role for quarter of a mile if done properly, keeps the other tractor in the field paying attention. I actually have used our hills to gather bales, any bales on top I will send them rolling down the hill with loader, saves a lot of trips up the hill with tractor.

    Just out of curiosity Ryan, what benefits (other than up front cost) do you see in doing round bales versus large square bales in either 3x3 or 3x4?

  • @HowFarmsWork

    @HowFarmsWork

    No messing with knotters and the ability to tube wrap. Unwrapped and unprotected round bales with net wrap keep better than the same of large squares.

  • @MorganOtt-ne1qj

    @MorganOtt-ne1qj

    And if you are set up for unrolling or ring feeding, the big squares don't work. Great for TMR and large bunk feeding (if you can store under roof) but not always a good fit. 👍
