    RAN types had centaurus engines,my cousin went to England in "48 to learn how to service engines and he told me there were modifications from time to time and one in particular was the fitting of kill switches on the ignition as any mechanic "walking" the prop around could have had a fatal accident,the engine was probably originally shut down by killing the fuel injection only, he had some great photos of those he called "his babies".

    This is a beautiful plane with plenty of power.The Corsair was the last US piston powered fighter kept in production after the war and was used in Korea as was the Sea Fury. I would very much like to to see the two of them in a practice dogfight by pilots of equal skill. The Corsair was a heavy load lifter too, but I don't know the Sea Fury's capabilities with carrying bombs. I'm just glad that BOTH were on our side! I'd give my eye teeth for a ride in one, I've had rides in B-25P-51T-6 B-17

    I saw this one live, and it is awesome! With the Centaurus or the R-3350, and now a R-2800 , I just don´t care!. The Seafury, the Sea Hornet (sadly no airframe exists) and the F8F Bearcat are the end line of piston engine fighters. But if I have to chose to go to war I would prefer the P-47N Thunderbolt...It had the range, high speed at altitude, 8 0.5 inch guns and more bombs or rockets, and it would survive severe punishment. I never understand why they took the F-51D to Korea instead the 47N!

    The F-51 was more available, and I think the US retired the P-47 after the war. While the Mustang did great in high altitude combat in Europe, the low-level altitude role of ground attack became the bane of the Mustang. A lot of Mustangs in Korea were lost due to ground fire; their inline engines receiving an unlucky shrapnel into the coolant tank, ending in their engines seizing up and being unable to fly anymore. Personally, I think the P-47 or - to a lesser extent - even the P-40 could've been more suitable for that role, as both aircraft are ruggedly built, although the P-40 also shares the same weakness as the Mustang - mainly their inline engines. But the Warhawk's pretty sturdy.

    I could be wrong (it has been known), but the sound is of a Bristol Centaurus engine, not an American substitute. Marvellous plane and great display. What a crying shame no DH Sea Hornet has survived. One version exceeded 500 mph in level flight, although the maximum speed in service was about 472 mph - still incredible. Big piston-engined fighters have a lot more charisma than early jets!

    Unfortunately, the engine is a P&W R2800, as visible from the four-bladed prop; Centaurus engines have five blades. Still, as long as this magnificent plane flies, I am happy.

    @nanchuanwushu1 Sorry to be a tedious plane spotter, but 369 has a Pratt & Whitney R3350 engine, which was fitted during a re-build after the aircraft was damaged in a wheels-up landing in July 1990. The P&W engine is fitted to a lot of surviving Sea Furies, one of the reasons being the difficulty of obtaining parts for the original Centaurus engine.

    @frontenginedragsterd Either I rmis-read the source, or my source got it wrong, which is all too common on the internet. Thank you for the correction. One day in August 1969, I walked around two retired RAN Sea Furies parked at Bankstown airport in Sydney - I still have the photos somewhere in my collection. It was the first and only time I had been up close to such aircraft and I was young and impressionable enough to be very impressed.

  • @LarS1963
    @LarS196313 жыл бұрын

    @elrey53 No it isn't. It's a development of the Hawker Tempest, again developed from the Hawker Typhoon. The reason it looks alike is the use of radial engines in both, the Fury using the Bristol Centaurus engine developing in excess of 3000 hp. The Hawker Fury was never build in numbers, as jet-fighters was the new thing, but the Royal Navy liked it, and ordered the carrier-version build, the Hawker Seafury. This Fury uses a different engine, though.

    2500 engines produced beginning in 1942 off of a 1918 design? A child could tune them. Finding parts for their underpowered applications however would be challenging. Perhaps that's why folks prefer something a little closer to 21st century power in their antique craft.

    I think 'Irvine5312x6ma' got it right in the comments below. 'This has the American Wright R3350 engine, and a 4 blade prop. The original Sea Fury has the Bristol Centaurus (even better sounding), and a 5-blade prop.' Currently, the only Sea Fury in the world running a Pratt & Whtney R2800 is the Sanders Aeronautics' Sea Fury 'Argonaut' as stated above; but they are working on building another. They switched to the R2800 due to the poor service record they'd had with the Wright R3350. They also have a Sea Fury running the original Bristol Centaurus and a race Sea Fury (Dreadnought) running a Pratt & Whitney R4360-Wasp Major. They are the 'Sea Fury Kings'. Check out their current projects at sandersaeronautics.com

    During WW2 a pilot from the Lutwaffe (sorry if mispelled, I can never get it right) landed his brand new Foche Wulf 190 into a british airfield, thinking it was a French airfield controlled by the germans. The governemt took the opportunity to study the plane. First Sea Fury's prototypes were born by modifying the 190.

    Steffi Reitsch During the war a Fw190 pilot mistakenly landed his aircraft on a British airfield. No one was more surprised when someone stuck a Very pistol in his ear and asked him to vacate the plane. This captured fully working Fw 190 was studied intently and certain features influenced the the design of the Hawker Fury.

    @@michaelnaisbitt1639, the windfall of having Armin Faber accidentally land his Fw- 190A-3 at Pembrey airfield, provided some shocking findings of its capabilities. Simulated combat tests soon showed it to be far ahead of the Spitfire V in every respect except turning, and some areas of performance were still superior to the Mk IX.

    blimey some sense at last! yip the sabre engine was awesome! fuel injection i believe? sabres had a bad rep because of unreliability. this was due to many things including leaving the machining swarf in the engine from the factory! quality control was non existent. now if only they had put 10% of the effort into the sabre as they did the merlin.. things might have been a lot different a lot sooner?

    The P47 Thunderbolt could reach speeds of 550mph in a dive, carry half the payload of a B-17, and carried eight 50cal machine guns. Both German fighters as well as the P47 could leave the Spitfire behind in a dive. Don't get so high and mighty about your dreary little island.

A/C is currently powered by a P&W R2800. A/C never flew as such with RAN. Its current colours are purely fictioneous and is on the French registry.
