What is most inaccurate about this scenario is the altitude. If you were familiar with the story, they were down to treetop level and Hawker was hedge hopping against the prevailing winds trying to get back across Allied lines with the Baron in pursuit. One of Richtofen's shots hit Hawker in the back of the head and he cartwheeled into the ground. The Baron did in fact retrieve Hawker's Lewis gun as a trophy which can be seen in some of the old photos of Manfred's room. Hawker was buried where he fell and his gravesite is unknown.

Just a couple of points for the record. Firstly, Hawker broke off the fight because he was almost out of fuel. He was at an altitude of about 300m, trying to get back to his lines, when he was killed instantly by one of Richthofen's bullets, which hit him in the back of the head. His aircraft then spun into the ground. Richthofen didn't land and take Hawker's Lewis gun, however, he did obtain it subsequently. Hawker was Richthofen's 11th victory.

Truly an inspiring video with a that sound track from the "Blue Max". Enjoyed seeing both sides take off, climb for altitude, hunt then engage face to face going full tilt into battle. Hawker had to have some "pluck" or courage to look for a fight in a DH-2 after "Bloody April". Thank you for fleshing out this most famous duel that I have read about.

If I may add a few words here. Manfred's aircraft was indeed an Albatros DII. The grey Pfaltz you show here would not have been present for another nine months or so. Richthofen describes it as a turning fight which went on for some time, going lower and lower because - although the DH2 could out-turn the DII - it was losing altitude all the time to keep up airspeed. Most versions of the story I have read put the final stages at low level. Wikipedia claims he crashed from about 1000 feet (lower than you show) while other accounts suggest he was so low he hit a building. There is no suggestion that the DH2 broke up as you show it. Recent New Zealand experience with a replica FE2c shows that diving 'pusher' aircraft do not achieve a great speed build-up and it is unlikely any pusher would reach break-up velocities. They dived like parachutes.

Excepting the Pfalz wouldn't show up at the front for months yet; Richthofen was flying a D-II and not a D-III; Richthofen had yet to start painting red on his plane and teh whole thing was a circling duel till Hawker made a skidding run for the lines...not much to criticize! The DH-2 had been brought in to deal with the "Fokker Menace" of earlier that year and was past due for retirement. We do know Hawker's plane had engine problems in recent days...the Gnome rotary was a vexing thing to keep tuned properly and this one ws well into it's service life. Probably Hawker was trying to fight for his life with an engine not giveing full revs. We'll never know for sure.

The text says Hawker was looking for his 18th victory. Hawker had 7 kills at the time, not 17. Also his last victory had come on September 7, 1915, more than a year earlier. Not only was his aircraft outclassed by the Albatros, but he was very much out of practice.

Superb video, and thank you for setting the record straight about Hawker. I felt the film Red Baron did him a real disservice. According to Richtofen's combat report, he got into a turning fight with Hawker, lasting 2-3 mins, with neither man gaining advantage and losing altitude all the time, with Hawker eventually breaking for his own lines. As we all know, that moment when you reverse the bank is when you're at your most vulnerable. And it was all an ace of MVR's calibre needed.

Manfred Von Richthofen was killed from the ground in France. Australian machinegunner "Bluey" made an exrtaordinary lucky shot from nearly 800 metres wich hit Manfreds plane. Bullet penetrated the planes surface -> hit him in the ribbs -> and bullet came out from the chest infront. Bullet spinned nearly 360* in his body and cut his lungs into pieces making deadly damage.. Manfred was able to land his plane after nearly 1 minute but died shortly after..

Whatever Hawker's skill level may have been, he had very little chance in the plane he was flying. Really, his only chance for victory would have been if his intitial dive from above had caught Richtofen unaware or if others from his flight had been able help him.

umm,, this may be accurate,,, but doesn't really tell wat happened tho? we read bout this dogfight in class. the two planes had drifted across enemy lines into Germany while fighting. when Hawker realized this, he tried to zig zag back to his side and by doing this he was slowly losing speed. mr. Red Baron held his plane steady and let the zig zagging Hawker drift in and out of his gun site,,, each time this happened he wold pull the trigger,,, eventually Hawker drifted into a bullet.

My bad I don't know how I missed this part, I was thinking Manfred was flying the D3 and if I had researched a bit more, I think I used the D3 because of Rise of Flights paint schemes I only had the D3 red fuselage at the time. The fight was at low level with Hawker trying to get back to his lines for lack of fuel and the winds against him. When The Baron shot him he cartwheeled into the ground and was buried where he fell. The Baron went back and salvaged the wreck for souveniers and got Hawker's Lewis gun which can be seen in photos over the door of Manfreds home. Sadly the Russians got all of his war trophys and the silver cups he awarded himself when they ravaged Germany at the end of WWII. Where are they now?

How could Hawker have known it was it for him if a bullet hit him in the back of the head? It seems unlikely that the bullet had just enough kinetic energy to injure, but not kill instantly, or even knock him unconscious.

Well I have heard several renditions believe it or not, I read somewhere where they think he shot down 50, then I heard 18, 9, and today I read 7, so I think the only man who really knows how many he shot down was Hawker.

Nice video but the real fight was a little different according to what I read. Richthofen engaged with Hawker in a turning combat. Hawker's DH2 was much more agile and turned better but because of its weak engine it was losing a lot of altitude in turns. Richthofen cleverly used the stronger engine of his Albatros D2 to retain slightly higher altitude. As both planes were descending in turns to the ground (Hawker being lower) and because the combat took place on the German side, Hawker who lost all altitude first had either to land and surrender or try to fly straight to his line. He chose the latter and that gave Richthofen the chance, the first real one during the combat, to shoot right at Hawker's plane and hit it. Richthofen really shot him in the head and Hawker's plane fell very close to first German trench line.

+Pmpc Pmpc Yes, I think you are right. I read that Hawker eventually zig-zagged as he ran for allied lines, and Richthofen shot him from behind through the head. He went on to obtain his usual trophy and of course had his cup made to celebrate the 'kill'. What people will do eh when they are brainwashed by their rotten elites to believe in nonsense like King & Country, and all that bullshit. The world hasn't changed a bit.

First of all, Richthofen wasn't flying an Albatros DIII in the engagement, he was flying an Albatross DII. Secondly, there were no Platz DIIIs in the engagement. The DIII wasn't available until the fall of 1917. Plus the DIII in your video has the Balkenkreuz insigna, which did not come into effect until March, 1918. Still nice video, just historically inaccurate.

No need to rehash the few errors, but the idea that von Richtoven was less than brave is ludicrus. The goal of WW! aviation was mostly to deny the enemy useful information, Richtoven's military goal would naturally be to shoot the two seaters since they were doing the observation. The germans remained in their side of the lines because they were so badly outnumbered. Waiting for the busines to come into the shop was how MvR described it. They were the flying circus not because of their colors,

Richthofen was flying an Albatros DII no special markings. Also they fought at low level in a swirling dogfight. Hawker came close but the DII was able to outclimb him and inside turn him using the extra height speed by slide slipping and diving during each successive turn. Eventually Hawker ran low fuel/ammunition and was forced to turn for home. As he weaved from sided to side flying towards his lines, Richthofen shot him through the back of head and crashed. Nice music poor history. Redo asap

I don't know how well this game compares to real live, but an Airco DH-2 is no match at all for an Albatros DII or DIIt. I'm a terrible pilot and I shoot those bricks down by the dozen. The C.11's are though opponents which are always cause for some nervousness, but the DH-2's are just prey.

+Mike Burger ...plus, even in accidental/operational crashes, guess what was between the weight of the engine and the ground? YOU. Pushers only made sense before the synchronized gun and, even then, a machine gun mounted above the wing on a biplane puller, or on a tripod on a monoplane puller, was arguably the superior solution (as, while making for a somewhat unwieldy gun, it allowed for an, aerodynamically, far superior aircraft).
