"Having Fun With Elvis On Stage" LP is a GOOD thing...? (EAPS S01E18)

"Having Fun With Elvis On Stage" LP is a GOOD thing...?
Without a doubt, "Having Fun With Elvis On Stage" is one of the most reviled, confusing LPs ever to be released officially - originally by a label made by Colonel Tom Parker. In this episode, Jamie and John reflect on Elvis's stake in the company, what that could mean about the possible level of Elvis's involvement in this LPs release, and why - even with all of this - the release may have been important in preserving Elvis history.

I’ve always maintained that the only redeeming qualities of this particular album is the monologue featured on Side 2. Up until that point, no one really knew anything from Elvis’ view, which as a very young fan, was fascinating for this fan.

Much of the banter itself is actually quite interesting, it just (in my opinion, at least) plays better with the original context of the songs he's doing before and after. Some fans have also made their own compilations of show banter, and some of them work better than this does, and others less so. Either way, a pretty unique concept! 😁

Parker was a small-time charlatan who landed the biggest star on the planet. Elvis was a superstar no matter who managed him. Parker damaged and limited Elvis’ career. Elvis’ phenomenal career was in spite of Parker not because of him. I doubt Elvis even knew that this album was created.

  • @EAPSociety

    @EAPSociety

A lot of that is very true - I will say, however, that as bad as Parker was in several respects, Elvis was lucky to have him vs some of the other people he could have ended up with. Whenever the day comes that we talk about the origins of "Hound Dog," we'll get into some pretty horrible business practices that make the Colonel seem downright saintly (as crazy as that sounds). And yeah, if we ever find out how much Elvis knew about this album, we'll absolutely share it with everyone! 😁

The Colonel still went after Elvis estate as I recall in the Sydney Newspapers. The Judge gave him zip. The Colonel sold his haul of all Elvis stuff and sent in 6 wheel trucks to Graceland. $16000000. Colonel went on to manage Rick Nelson. But that didn't last due to him passing away due to plane crash.

My friend worked with the late Aussie sound engineer, Bruce jackson who recorded heaps of Elvis live soundboards. He refused in his lifetime to sell the soundboards until the recent FTD released audio documentary with live shows. The Colonel once in Vegas got lost in gambling.

Oh, yes - absolutely he did. And funny enough about the sale, my parents and I actually visited the Colonel's office one day not long after Graceland picked up the largest batch of items (iirc). I think we took video, and if I can find it, I'll have to share some of that. And definitely a shame about Rick - Gordon Stoker said that Rick was probably the nicest guy he ever met. (In addition to being a great talent)

That was fun. Some good background on the release and Boxcar. Shocking that Elvis only got 15% and interesting that most soundboards come from 1974. My own view is The Colonel gave up on Elvis in 73 after Aloha and after the fall out in Vegas when Elvis fired him. Box car and the soundboards could have been his nest egg. And less shows were recorded in 75 -77 could be because there were no other major fall outs with Elvis so he felt more secure. He didn't intervene with Elvis health problems but he did persuade Elvis to go back to Dr Nick and get rid of Ghanem in August 76 when Elvis put on his worst ever show in Houston. He slurs all the way through and is out of tune on every song and Elvis did get it together at the end of the year. I had the Having Fun On Stage LP and I thought the monologue from 69 covered the story side of things remember Elvis did no TV interviews there were no videos never mind KZread what existed in the public domain was limited and the On Stage gave us some idea of his personality and what kind of banter he had between the well well wells. On this record the Well Well Wells seem to be the fun. You can only listen to that before it becomes annoying and Elvis did the same things over and over for years.

Glad you enjoyed it, Paul! Yeah, it's a pretty crazy situation, to be sure. What's interesting on the story parts, at least for me, is what Elvis gets right as well as what he doesn't. Always fascinated me, but when that much happens all at once, it can definitely become a bit of a blur, lol!

Elvis was talking a lot more on stage 74 and depending on the mood it could be more and more until the end. I read where Elvis stopped talking to Colonel and saying he didn't want to tour, at least if Colonel was involved. In 75 the Colonel was so worried that he and Disken showed up at Graceland after a couple months. This never happened before and Disken said Elvis was looking at him as if he was saying what the are you doing here. Colonel used the coming back to do charity concerts in Elvis's home state of Miss. that had recently been hit by tornadoes that was very destructive. He knew Elvis was going to do something for charity and it became 5 or 6 concerts at a new arena in Mississippi over one weekend. Of course Elvis paid for all expenses for one concert including rental of the building. The Colonel had Elvis back and tours were scheduled. I don't know how of it is true but I can see it happening.

After reading the Nash book The Colonel and seeing what Colonel and business partners, and I put RCA in that category, I began to really dislike Colonel. I think the reason he was able to get away with it is because Elvis trusted him. Vernon trusted Colonel and he was supposed to be in charge of business for Elvis and probably wasn't going to question Colonel. Colonel took advantage of this especially the last few years.

Oh, absolutely. To be fair, there are worse people that Elvis could have been managed by, but that doesn't excuse what the Colonel *did* do.

Hey guys. This is such a fascinating video. Knowing what we know now, it probably shouldn't be so surprising that such a bizarre album could be released. It's a typically Tom Parker carney trick. I recall a reference to "Having Fun.." in the discography section of the Essential 1970's Elvis box and you've totally cleared up the mystery of it. Sometimes the worst aspect of an artist's catalogue get's issued without their control. (A Beatles equivalent would probably be the "Live At Star Club Hamburg, 1962" album which has been reissued countless times without their control). Sadly this was done WITHIN the Elvis organisation. The production credit for Elvis is royally bizarre! Thanks again for this video. I will keep seeking them out. Cheers guys. PS I also have my own KZread channel if you'd like to check it out. Cheers 👍👍

Guys, Elvis knew about that Album and was reportedly embarrassed by it. He felt the content of it was making him look like a fool. BTW I have all three volumes of this recording. Its often called by many "the worst album ever released. Not only by Elvis, but by anyone. Despite its content, there are some very funny pieces throughout. But its a hard listen at times and the listener does feel for the poor guy. Apart from this, Elvis was a very funny guy and quick witted. Stay safe and go well.

@@EAPSociety My source is from the back cover of the three record set of "Having Fun..." that I have. Here is the direct quote: "By all accounts, Presley was infuriated when RCA put this album into the general marketplace, considering it a tremendous embarrassment" Source: Elvis World 2019. The set I have states that its a Deluxe Box Set is a very Limited Edition. Only 200 made. I have number 107 in the set. Whether the print run is accurate I am not sure. I have the set in front of me as I post this comment, and the photos on the covers are slightly changed from the original release, however everything else about them is accurate right down to the Boxcar logo and the " A Talking Album Only" logo. They even have the same map of the US on the back and the text that goes with that back cover. The front of the Box Set states that the set comes with a Bonus CD however, for some reason the CD was not in my set. For obvious copyright reasons the vinyl themselves do not say much, "Having Fun With Elvis On Stage" that's what the label states. I obtained these from the Elvis site: "Memphis Mansions" in 2019. I just did a quick look see if that set is still available. I couldn't see it on first glance, although to be fair the Memphis Mansions is a very large site. Hope all this info helps, after all its still part of the Elvis Legacy. Stay safe and go well.

just for fun, i guess.... but maybe a little too negative and speculative for my taste... but as history shows, "good godly men differ" :) in fact, i had a completely different feeling about this album when i came across it in the late 70s (i think it was), here i found something different, and most importantly, clips of Elvis speaking which i had not heard before, that was a rarity and i thought it was interesting.... of course i was not sophisticated when it came to what was artistic decisions or not in releasing albums... i looked at it rather uncomplicated, and still do to a certain degree... back in the day i did not even know that there was such a thing as a "bootleg marked" for Elvis shows, so i did not hear any soundboards back then, only the "official" releases, as far as i can recall.... but as for "official" releases i still do not think this was the worse thing that could have happened... :-)
