Have You Tried Painting with Neutrals? - Featuring Terry Ludwig "Shadows and Shades"
Have you tried painting with a primarily neutral palette? I know we often go for the "punchy" and brilliant colors, but don't ignore those neutrals! Although they may appear lack-luster, they actually create a wonderful foundation to enhance the more brilliant color choices and give you control over focal point strategies.
Enjoy this tutorial as I paint with primarily a neutral set of pastels by Terry Ludwig. They have two sets that have some lovely neutrals... "Umber Shadows and Shades," and "Shades of Nature" (links below).

Yay! Lefties rock!
I enjoyed this so much, Susan.
Wonderful video. Thank you. I am a huge fan of neutral and limited palettes. I think they can convey such emotion.
Splendit!
I like bright colors but also the softness of the neutrals! : )
Ah, very good. I have the opposite problem. I overuse neutrals and dark. My paintings look dark and sad. I keep watching for help. Thank you.
Thank you for your paintings lessons.

My pleasure 😊
These neutral colours are very essential in Artists Palette
I’m a beginner.. but I love this palette.. I actually think paintings look sooo elegant and professional.. thank you Susan always 🌷
Pretty!
Great video. Thanks so much!
Wonderful
I really enjoyed this, Susan. A beautiful set of pastels, masterfully used. Thank you!
Love the neutrals that you used, Susan!
I still have a 20? color set of Rembrandt’s that I bought several decades ago when I was taking art classes at my local community college. On the top of the box I wrote $1.00….the price I was gonna sell them for at a yard sale. I decided not to sell them and I’m glad I kept them. I’ve added to my pastel stash now, but since I’ve gotten into pastels, I will use those along with my other more expensive soft pastels too.

You are so welcome, Susan! Hope you have fun painting with neutrals!
Great tutorial and content, thank you. I got the Mt. Vision Thunderstorm Grey set and really love the soft neutrals and the way they handle too. But the Terry Ludwig set you used looks beautiful and lot sof variety!
Really beautiful. Thank you !

You are so very welcome Clarissa!
Beautiful piece of work Susan. The final single passages in the lower section really do produce a terrific illusion of the surface. As for the Terry Ludwig sets, yes they are gorgeous but I cant afford even just one. In fact, I wanted to order just 2 eggplant sticks at $6.50 a piece and the final price was going to be 75 bucks cos of shipping costs. So no eggplant pastels for me. Oh well...

It is crazy how much the artist quality pastels are…. I hear ya Louisa! It’s taken me years to be able to acquire what I have and I still have to budget.
Susan thank you so much for this wonderful video! It’s exactly what this newbie needs. My love of color takes over and overwhelms my paintings. I’ve gone back to doing a value study, using just pencil, before I start a painting and now I want to try using only neutrals to create a painting. Can you please do more of these videos using neutrals with some brighter colors too? Thanks again you are such a great teacher and artist. BTW love your painting really showcases your talent.

Question dear Susan! Can the chamois cloth be washed to reuse? Or do you throw out and always need to buy a new one? Any money saving tips on that? Thanks!! 😊

I have such a big supply that I haven’t had to wash it yet, but I absolutely think it could be washed and reused.
Is there a difference between pencil lead and graphite? Graphite comes in pencil form as well as stick form, but I don’t know if pastels resist graphite marks.
Why do you call them neutrals? Those are desaturated colours. Neutrals are grey.

Some could be considered de-saturated indeed, but neutrals aren’t necessarily totally gray. Neutrals are created by combining two colors that are complements, and then adding white to create different tints.
