August 2022 I decided to start reading every day before bed and try to read more instead of going on my phone. So far in 2023 I have read 22 books of varying lengths (including the entire Harry Potter series in 25 days. Could not put those down they were so damn good), have an easier time falling asleep, and frequently find myself reading a chapter when I need a break from school/studying. Please start reading more (and more physical books to get away from screens)!

I use a kindle, and it gives a prediction of time until you finish the chapter/book. You can also change the font size, light, etc. and it can show a percentage of the way through the book. I have one of the paperwhite kindles, and the "screen" doesn't actually emit photons, so it's easier on the eyes.

I got into reading because of Big A! I've never been a reader, and some time ago I was in a really bad spot. Atrioc recommended The Algebra of Happiness on stream, I felt like it would be a good book for me and started with that one. What a piece of shit that book was lmao (the beginning was good tho). Since then I've read 6 books in a couple of months and I'm currently on the second book of the Red Rising saga. It really is a great source of entertainment, it also made me go to a book club when visiting a different city and now it's something I can bond over with friends. All thanks to the Glarketer himself!

@@thomasrocke tldr: it's only helpful with money-related topics and it derails after the first part The book is divided into three sections, the first and strongest one is about success, it has interesting career and money management advice. I found this to be by far the best part of the book, and it's pretty good for kind of waking you up to go and find economic success. Also it's the only part of the book with anything related to algebra but that's whatever lmao The other two sections (I believe they were Love and Health) are filled with stories from the author's life that mostly go nowhere and contain very shallow advice. Some parts are particularly infuriating to read because it feels like the author is no longer trying to help the reader. When I saw Atrioc recommend the book, he said it contained proven methods to achieve a happier life and that was the reason I read the book. BUT THERE'S ALMOST NONE OF THAT lmao. It has sources to studies related to many things mentioned in the book, but it might as well be just a list of the sources because there's almost no insight about them. Something that I also realized is that I'm not the target demographic at all. Maybe the book could be way more effective/helpful if you're American, a parent (or want to be a parent) and not poor. But it's also a quick and easy read, I finished it in a couple of days and I'm a very slow reader. If you're curious and find it for cheap I'd say go ahead

The first Atrioc book club clip got me back into reading - his summary of Red Rising was so interesting I finished it in a week, and now I increased my collection quite a lot with other books as well as reading some that I didn't finish before. I began Morning Star (Red Rising III) a couple days ago and I bursted into tears a few chapters in, I had to stop reading for a while to clear my eyes and nose, I really hope Atrioc continues with the Red Rising series, I'm interested to know what he thinks. Also, physical books are goated, if I had a kindle I'd read there as well, but a few I couldn't get in physical I read them on my phone (Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow is so goddamn good).

I read the first three a while ago, and I heard the next three were excellent, so I started rereading the books. For some reason, I couldn't get into it this time -- I found Darrow very unlikeable as a character, too melodramatic for my tastes. Pretty sure I quit while rereading Golden Son, in the very first page. I know the other books introduces many other POV characters, but I'm not sure if I can handle reading more of Darrow. My question is, does he get better after the first trilogy, or is he much the same/

@Atrioc @Big A Clips I understand what you mean by subtitles, but it definitely does help me with reading comprehension. My first ACT score on reading I got like a 26. Between the time of that test and the next one, I didn’t do any reading whatsoever and I didn’t even get tutoring. I only watched a shit ton of anime. The next ACT test, I got a 30. And the next one after that (again, no reading or tutoring between), I got a 33. My English section score (Grammar and shit) also improved between the tests. Science and math remained stagnant pretty much, only improved by 1 or 2 points throughout all of the tests. Subtitles definitely can count as reading for pleasure because they actually helped me with reading comprehension. I am more than happy to defend my case, and I bet others can relate to me.

Red rising is a fucking AMAZING series, and it always reminds me of another that I've read before called "The Mark of the Thief" by Jennifer Nielsen. It's another fantasy trilogy about this guy who works as a slave in the mines of Rome or something, and he finds a talisman or pendant that belongs to Julius Caesar. It might just be me looking back on fond memories, but that trilogy was an amazing addition to my repertoire

I hard agree that books on stuff like kindles feel like there isnt any feel for the book's mass in terms of progress and grandeur. The percentages or whatever doesnt really give me the feel of accomplishment that is approaching the last few pages of a book in my hands. I dont know if they could improve on that for digital right now. I can imagine us going 2 ways either they can straight beam info into your brain to learn in a flash or have virtual books feel like they have mass when you open one in future FDVR.

Hello KZread commenter, I'm primary a sci-fi & fantasy reader and my favourite book of is The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. It's set in fantasy Venice and is a thieves revenge story. So there is a tragedy (it's the main driving factor) but it's an overall phenomenal read. If your really adverse to any form of tragedy then The Martian by Andy Weir is a great read it's a sci-fi novel based in the near future, it's about a botanists being stranded on Mars and doing everything he can to survive until NASA's next planned trip to the red planet. It likes to get into the science of how things work and what he has to figure out to survive. It had a very good film adaptation I would recommend reading it even if you've seen the film. Finally if either of the previous two recommendations didn't tickle your fancy I would ask why not? is it something I said? if you don't trust those why would you trust my final recommendation? On a serious note I would suggest any of Terry Pratchett's discworld books, his an incredible author that just has a way with words that not many others do, his unique style and incredibly clever selections allow for just a very fun read, you can't go wrong with "Going Postal" It's about a talented criminal being sentenced to death only for him to be instead saved by the patrician and hired to revive the cities postal system. It's set in a fantasy London/New York and is incredibly comical. Going postal is also part of a series within the discworld so there are follow up books if you enjoy it.

e-books and audio books are especially important if you are in a rural area and your local library is hooked up to a larger regional library consortium. You might not have free or cheap access to a large number of books regularly on your own, but with a library card, you can get digital access to a significant SIGNIFICANT number of books you'd never be able to touch without having a big bank account (books are NOT cheap).

It's really worth looking into if you feel like you can't afford books - which again, no shame books are fking expensive. It's not a cheap hobby. Get a library card and a StoryGraph account and you'll be cooking with gas.

Fuck yes Red Rising. Red Rising has consumed my fucking life. I read Light Bringer in three days after release. I did nothing but eat, sleep, and read that book. The only discord I’m active in is full of fellow Pierce Brown fanatics. It’s a problem I have.

Kindle is actually GOATED and all your reasons for not liking it are wrong. Literally just being a boomer. You get a prediction of time before you finish the book/chapter and % of how much you have read. It doesnt fuck with your eyes like most other screens do. Has really great note taking and highlighting features. Built in dictionary lookup(this is actually so useful if you are dumb like me). And its one thing that can hold like literally every book you have and you can take it anywhere. Also for my adhd ass, being able to go between a bunch of books without having to worry about bookmarking and actually physically changing books is nice. All that being said I do read physical books sometimes because the experience does just have a different feel to it, like it feels more 'real' for lack of a better term, which kindle will never be able to replicate. Before i started using kindle i would read like a book every couple months but now I read like a book a week.

I used to LOVE reading, but as school forced me to read more and more as “work”, it became LABELLED as work in my mind. I didn’t wanna read ANY book because it felt like a damn chore, so past late middle school I stopped reading multiple books a week.

I still 'read' a lot, but 90% of it is audiobooks now as I already have eyestrain in my every day life. Some magic is lost compared to actually reading, hearing books read in a certain voice completely changes the feel. Especially if it's a novel series and half way through the narrator changes and you get completely thrown off.

I think there's somewhat of a fundamental misunderstanding in the whole "have you read a book if you listened to the audiobook" debate. because of *course* you haven't read it. But that doesn't mean you're less of an authority on it than someone who has read it. You've consumed the book through another medium, and that is still valid and you know as much about it as someone who has read it, but you certainly haven't read it. It's like saying you've listened to a radio broadcast because you've read the transcript. Like no, you haven't. You know what was said, but you didn't listen to it.

I think books are mostly boring as hell, I rarely find a book I enjoy, most of them I just rather return them. I recently rediscovers a book which I could never get my hands on as a kid, which is warriors by Erin hunter. Best book in a long time on book 9 and still find myself smiley and getting emotional. Rip bluestar 😢

Unfortunately this title isn’t showing up on the big a book club page, but Invisible Woman by Caroline Perez in phenomenal. I can’t recommend it enough for someone interested in data and gender discrimination.
