Had one weird cut where I left it out, but I compare my workflow of starting with a chord and then pulling piece off to build a bassline etc like watching someone whos speedrunning FL studios.
Thats a daw workflow I haven't really seen replicated in hardware, and is a really neat thing to have access to.

DAWless here for 3 years using Beatstep Pro and onboard sequencers for my various devices, but lacked a cohesiveness to the workflow. Since Play 1.2, I've been working toward picking one up as my master seq/drum machine so this video is perfect to get some ideas and moral support! Mitch and team are killing it on the updates and community building for this box. Glad he asked you to shoot this! BTW Quick Copy (hold > tap new pad) works for variations, you don't need to copy and paste the grid notes

The thing is, the midi splitter won't catch the Jack 2 outputs, only the Jack 1 output. Any chance you know what I'm doing wrong? I can't find the answer anywhere and your video is pretty much the only one that has almost the same setup as mine

Good and inspirational video, thanks for sharing! 🙏🏻 I’m using the Play OG together with my Digitakt (or if stereo sampling is needed my M+) so at this point I don’t feel the need to upgrade to the Play+ for its sampling capabilities. It would be nice if Polyend would expand all of their sequencers’ capabilities a bit more towards their unique role within a dawless setup. So for instance more in-depth control of sending and receiving Program Changes (at the start of a pattern or variation) without having to worry about polyphony. Or changing and renaming on-screen labels for CC knobs per pattern / variation. More MIDI effects or actions for manipulating sequences.

Great explanation. I just got my Poly Play last week, and after the obligatory ' what the fuck did I just waste my money on this time' response (during the first hour of learning), I now absolutely love it and need more grids to store more patterns. Because a billion is just not enough spaces... *Note: With all these amazing advancements in musical instrument technology, I just know that once all the tech know-how finally trickles down to robot girlfriend development, the world will be a wonderful place for single guys! That's how inspiring the Polyend Play is!

Great video, I learned a lot! I have, up until this video at least, seen Play as a groovebox++ and the Oxi One as a sequencer. However, it really seems from here that with the 1.4 firmware, Play has become a moderately powerful MIDI sequencer. If you are someone who is not working with Eurorack modules, is there a reason to own an Oxi One when you could have a Play for roughly the same price? Is there a use case for having both? Seeing the ability to record CC automations really makes me see Play has matured and the role of Oxi One becomes far less clear.

I did the same thing. Problem is poliphony. I dont want to dial in chords, I want to be able to play them and record them via keyboard. Also, using PP as master MIDI sequencer is messy if you have a few Elektron boxes, bcs you need to send program change messages in order to change patterns, and on some there is slight latency. Also, no CV is a bit meh, given that Polyend did a lot for modular.

I'm actually a little disappointed in the Play. For Dawless I like to control instruments while also playing others on the Thru channel. The Play having no Thru channel means there's no transmission of footpedal CC, that kills me. I'm also a musician who thinks automatic "chord" and "scale" functions are at best a crutch and at worst cheating, so the Play not allowing you to input polyphony with a controller and instead making you use the internal chord bank is just bizarre and a little offensive. My main reasons for getting it were the 8 midi channels and the 128 pattern song potential (a MASSIVE improvement over the 16 pattern song limit on SQ64), so I'm still enjoying it for that, and there's still a LOT to explore.

Something is confusing me a bit with the MIDI though. Are they monophonic? Did you need to eat up 4 tracks to play the Rhodes? I think I missed something. ah you mentioned that at the end conclusion. There is a CRITICAL bug on the Play when using large projects. A save operation with 36 or more patterns takes several minutes. A project with 100+ patterns takes 45 minutes or longer to save. I bought one hated it and sold it, it was too touchy for mecIcspent more time correcting my mistakes. Horrible piece of kit😂

I did feel that at first. Right away I turned off the on-knob double tap to change parameter rows, & focused on the encoder, got a lot better

Ok, I did try that but also at the time midi was very poor aswell, I wanted to use it to trigger my HPD20. I felt it was a one trick pony for D&B. After that I just went crazy and bought a Midi Arp, Polyend Seq, Oxi One and an NDLR. Now I have a few learning curves but the Seq and HPD20 is excellent so far, recording into the Seq from the HPD pads.

It’s so crap managing samples. Total bum out

I do agree with that, not being able to get there with the usb is wack. I need to get better about reviewing certain things like they're tech, and not just like instruments, I take a lot of that stuff in stride when I probably shouldn't.

@@JorbLovesGear no criticism - I was so hyped but couldn’t believe how slow and janky the sample side was. It’s like a pentium 2 or something. The pool was a total pain to clear / swap out and just not fast enough to maintain the inspiration for me. As for now - i don’t think you can beat an iPad with Drambo. It’s unbelievably good to use and not to mention all the synths/fx/and wide variety of exotic midi sequencer micro apps. It’s totally rad and doesn’t feel like a pc/daw - not in the slightest!

The debate could go on, personally I LOVE the Deluge. However, with the Deluge firmware going open source, give it 12 months and it will be a giant killer

@@MasterStatusUK there’s no doubt once a product goes open source their endless possibilities. It’s a no-brainer at this point by a deluge because I can only see this product going up in price the more features it gets packed with.
