That would be really boring. Not many PHEV's does +150km on electric. I'm guessing this was a special case scenario.
Actually a very decent proposition for transitioning countries. Rather than phev's with like 6kwh batteries, why even bother plugging in.

It depends on the car really, 6 kWh will actually give some usable range daily driving to a subcompact with a I-3 range extender, on an SUV or even a crossover, not so much.

Depends on use. My dad has a Golf GTE and never use fuel in day to day use. But can go on longer trips without needing the charging stops. It can also tow 1500kg which is not going to happen on a similar size pure EV. Hes also keeping the petrol tank almost empty. Pretty sure every time I've been in that car the darn low fuel warning light is on :)

@@Gazer75 With the german EVs you can tow a lot. The problem is the maximum weight limit for a normal drivers license.
@Gazer75
Жыл бұрын
@ They are in a different price class as well. EVs that can tow 1500kg are around 100k NOK (~10k €) more expensive. And yes, a problem is the combined 3.5t weight limit for a regular B class license. Here in Norway we can get a B license with code 96 that increases the combined max to 4250kg without needing a new drivers exam like for a BE. You only need to complete a 7 hour training course. Problem with B and B96 is that its the legal max weight of the trailer that is counted, not the current weight. With BE that changes so you can actually tow a trailer with a legal max weight of 2t with a car that can only tow 1.5t as long as the current weight of it is below 1.5t. Basically not loading it fully.
Efficiency at 90 is really good, even your test in summer with model x raven was at 177, Mercedes was at 195 and e-tron over 200 so yeah pretty good for a fossil … Model Y is of course better but stil, amazing … Please test some big battery PHEV when back in Norway
One year ago I sold my Ioniq phev and bought an ev which I love but we have just been on a 750mile round trip and I experienced problems with broken chargers, queuing for chargers and some people getting irate and trying to queue jump and this is when I missed my Phev.
This car is great and this kind of PHEV i would buy for sure because its best of both world. You have around 150km of electric range for every day use, and when you want to go on longer trip you can just put it in hybrid mode have great fuel consumption and do not worry about changing. We need more PHEV like this and not like the current ones with 10-15kwh battery and only AC charging.

Totally agreed, in order for a vehicle to qualify as a real PHEV it should have at least 80 - 100 km of range on a bad day like VW and GM rate their vehicles (not NEDC standard). Plus not all areas of the world has Norway's excellent charging network, even in North America it can be hit or miss once you get too far from a city, well unless you have a Tesla. So home / work charging a PHEV is the best solution if the electric range covers most of their driving, it also prevents battery hoarding so more commutes are carbon free.
@Likr666
Жыл бұрын
15 kWh would be enough for most comuters. When I considered driving electric 2019 I was looking for an Ioniq classic PHEV. About 60 Km electric range would cover more than 90% of my everyday driving. But in a PHEV you have a double complex system. A fossil engine and an electric motor. You have a small fuel tank and a small battery. More stuff, that can break down,... It looks to me like the worst of both sides. The car is not optimized for running fossil and it's not optimized for going electric. So I am absolutely fine with the decision to go pure electric.
@bartvanhoof6278

Like others have said ... PHEV is also the worst of both worlds ... fast battery degradation (due to small battery), high maintenance costs, you still pollute, etc. ... so you are buying an expensive car (PHEV costs more than ICE) with expensive running costs. You are better off: 1. Buying a decent BEV ... and just adapting for that one long trip a year (what I do). 2. Continue with your current ICE ... what is the drive to continuously buy new cars every few years? If you live out in the middle of nowhere I'm sure a 10+ yr old ICE will do just as well as a brand spanking new one. No one is forcing anyone to buy BEVs only ... in all countries, everyone can still buy ICE cars ... and if you really want to, just wait until the last moment before new-BEV regulation kicks in and buy an ICE then to be able to stick around for as long as possible. Even in Norway, you can still buy an ICE vehicle. This kind of transition vehicle (a PHEV) is just bad whichever way you want to spin it.
This is pretty good car for Ukraine. We often do not have electricity now, and fossil engine will give you opportunity at least have a transport, also if this car has vehicle to load protocol then it can be used as a power source during blackout. In Europe we would call the Haval H6 a 'modern classic', because of its huge sales success. There are two cars that drove mobility for the common people in China. In 3rd tier cities and rural areas this was the Wuling Hongguang (not the Mini EV, but the older fossil MPV). This is the best-selling Chinese name plate of all time. Lately it has dropped in the sales charts, but they still make about 300.000 per year. In the more developed and affluent 1st tier cities and coastal areas, this role was taken by the Haval H6. The car in the video is actually the 3rd generation of the name plate. All generations combined, it's probably (confident but not completely sure) the second best selling Chinese name plate of all time. Last year and this year, the car landscape is changing quickly, but the H6 is usually still in the sales top 10.

For those who dont like PHEV and say that they are "the worst of both worlds", are clearly not from Australia. With such a large area and poor/non-existent charging network, relying purely on electric is too great a problem. Having electric range for daily driving (majority use case) and a petrol "range extender" for long trips in any direction (not just where there are limited chargers), becomes the best of both worlds. There are also many roads/tracks/trails in Australia that are not suitable for 2WD, so this would be perfect if it had an AWD option.

I agree, there's much stupid talk when it comes to hybrids/phevs from some of the media. Much of the Outback is run from petrol stations that only have access to electricity via diesel generators, good luck getting enough power there to charge electric vehicles. Phevs/Hybrids will have a places as a part of the mix for some time to come.

I'm a PHEV owner/driver and honestly I agree with the statement that it's the worst of both, from a general perspective. That being said, it doesn't mean a PHEV doesn't have it's use cases. Especially for the (energy) transition periods (which can take several decades in some places) this is a very useful or maybe even must-have technology. However a PHEV being useful doesn't mean it's good as a generic solution. Especially most PHEV's currently out there are pretty terrible regarding range. This car is kind of a breath of fresh air in the PHEV space.
@supamario3055

@@Razwer Technically, yes it is the worst of both worlds. But currently, for the situation that I have described, it is the most practical solution. In a perfect world, we would be driving with a small battery that recharges super fast and there are super fast charging inductive pads everywhere.

Just think ... most people are currently driving an ICE vehicle no? So that means they would need to buy that PHEV ... in your scenario someone might live out in no man's land when it comes to charging infrastructure ... so any charging would have to be done at home anyway. So ... why spend money on a new car when their current (ICE) car probably works just fine? It is not as if a PHEV is a cheap option regarding new cars, they are actually quite expensive (to buy and then maintain). Example: In my country ... Volvo XC40 gasoline from €39,100; PHEV from €53,700, BEV from €47,108 ... wtf am I going to buy a PHEV with those base prices!? If I'd want a new car I'd get the base gasoline model ... the €14,000 I can save is a lot of fuel ... and I can run the ol' ICE jallopy for many, many more kms (including maintenance) before I burn through 53k. I don't like PHEV because it means I'd have to spend money to buy a new car ... no one is forcing me to buy a BEV ... in this uncertain market I'm not buying anything ... and I don't feel the need to get a new car every couple of years.

@@bartvanhoof6278 The point is, we are meant to be reducing combusting fossil fuels. A battery can be recharged using plentiful solar (many countries). So yes, most charging is done at home and most travel is around home. But for the rest of remote travel without charging infrastructure, there is still a reliance on fossil fuel. But at least this is better than 100% reliance for now. As infrastructure increases, reliance will decrease.
Excelent math explanation!!! Thank you!!
This brand making big inroads to Australian market
hybrid is part of the solution imo, with (expensive) liquid sustainable fuel as a backup as it is very scarce/inefficient to produce. Today it's mostly dino juice of course, and we see how valuable electricity is in Europe these days, so there will be some time until we can "waste" large amounts of electricity on synthetic fuel. Who knows, a major battery breakthrough could render the whole hybrid concept moot for cars anyway. But I like the concept of this Haval H6 in today's world, with a medium sized battery pack that can fast charge and a rather small and efficient ICE.
For a lot of the population in the UK at the moment, this car makes a lot of sense. The charging network is quite poor here, so a hybrid fossil engine is a relief!

I was thinking of the GLE as well; this seems like the poor man's GLE PHEV, with the similar size battery and the CCS charging. This would probably be popular in Germany, but I do have to wonder why you'd want to bother schlepping the fossil engine around all of the time when you'd almost never use it. Most PHEVs you still need to get an oil change at regular intervals; in this car (just like the GLE) it's entirely plausible that you could be required to get an oil change having never used the engine since the last one!
I think it's ideal for people who can charge at home, and only occasionally do long trips... 160km range is going to cover most daily drives, especially for someone living in Bangkok driving around Bangkok in EV only mode (keeping down the pollution), and you don't have to rely on the public charging network if you don't want to on occasional trips further afield. In the long run, hybrids are a dead-end, but at the moment, while the public charging infrastructure isn't up to the standard in Norway, this would be useful for someone like me where most of the time it's short shopping trips which could be EV only, but with an occasional long trip 2-3 times a year. And, having seen some regular H6s in parking lots at Central, it's a pretty enough car, although that one is quite a bit more expensive than their regular hybrid version.
In South Africa we have had Haval for a few years. Very popular as its great value for money. We have just receive the hybrid model. Hoping we get the PHEV soon.
I own Haval H6 normal gas-powered 4WD version in Chile, it's an excellent car for a it's price, didn't get the normal hybrid because it was only 2WD and I live in a snowy area. In rural Norway/EU cars like this would have it’s mission. With pore charging infrastructure (Like northen Norway) and battery tech still kind of expensive, many would stick to their fossils. Hybrids with a decent electric range gives the possibility to do all your local drives fully electric, and the fossil drive train will give the range for longer trips. Of course when batteries get cheaper so most people can afford an EV with a decent range, and a better charging network this will change. Biggest issue is do you install chargers for almost no customers, or do you wait until you have a decent customer base. With very few charging options many will skip the EV wave. Until this is sorted hybrids will have it’s mission.

Bjørn I'd be interested in battery degradation tests of PHEVs. I assume they degrade pretty fast because they're more driven down to 0% and recharged to 100% than BEV. I know this isn't particularly your field of interest, but it could serve as a backup when no new bevs hit the market.

I agree! I have a Golf Gte from 2020 that is supposed to deliver 7kWh according to WV specs, but it only delivers 5,1… That said, I have also used the fossil engine quite a lot to charge the battery (to avoid cold start the day after on the way to the charging point).

@@michaelnilsson8400 My dads GTE from like 2015 had its battery replaced like two years ago for free. Not sure why... There was some battery life/condition inspection and it got replaced after that. It was still capable of doing 40+ km in summer. My experience is that the battery is never at 0%. The car will normally fire up the engine when there is 5km or so left and run in hybrid. My dad never charges the battery using the charge mode. I've tested it once to see consumption, and it was over 1L/10km during this. Only downside is that the GTE refuses to run in pure EV mode when temps drops down to -5 to -10C.

In my Kia Sportage it will switch to ICE at 16%. Regen works at 100% battery so there must be some buffer at the 100%.

@Scrappress I have a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (2014 model) which shipped with a 12 kWh battery. I am just about to hit 150,000 miles (of which I have driven 110,000 of those miles in just over 5 years). On Car Scanner app, when new, it shows 38 Ah capacity and the ICE kicked in at about 10Ah. For that, you get about 25 gentle miles. Now, CarScanner gives me 25 Ah capacity and the ICE kicks in at about 7Ah and I get about 18 gentle miles on the battery alone. When the battery was newer, I was finding that at cruise speed, you got about 1 mile on ICE with about 0.7 mile pure EV. Now, that EV range has dropped to about 0.5 mile per 1 mile of ICE. So I'd say degradation is not too severe.

@@garynaylor Ok thanks for providing these stats. I think it would be nice to have also a database for PHEV and not only BEV degradation.
Hybrids are great,yet production is steep. You have 2 car propulsion in one car and more things can go wrong.
bmw i3 had that years ago ;)

@@bjornnyland Wow, at least 300 KB to much 🤑
7:40 - "carrying the fossil for no reason". The gauge saying 671km range on fossil is the reason. How much extra battery weight would it need to carry to take it that far? Probably quite a bit more than the weight of that fossil and quite a bit more damaging to make/recycle.

Imagine how good the range will be on pure fossil...

@@bjornnyland The keyword is pragmatism. This can do everything a large battery ev can do day to day then once on a long run it has massive range and quick refilling. Even some of the best ev's - lets take a Model X for example - can't get close to that range or refil time. They also use close to three times the battery which is then mostly being dragged around as weight for no reason most of the time. Which is less destructive to the environment?
In your Tesla Model Y 1000 km drive, that car consumed 202 kW/km, but you said it was quite efficient. This Haval got 192 kW/km, then you said it’s less efficient. You told us that Tesla could do 150-160 kW/km, but that’s not happen in your Tesla Model Y episode. Please enlighten us. Thank you.

I only had problems with chinese cars. They look good and are more cheap, but the quality is poor, especially after a few years, you spend more time at the mechanics, than on the road. I will never buy a chinese car again. I will only drive Kia, Toyota or a european brand.
It's bad enough having Tesla track your every move, but a Chinese brand? It's like Tik Tok... do you want the Chinese gov't to access to your information?
So much waste of space when you put fossil engine in this car... i can t see anyting else. Put 34kwh more battery in this car and this is it ! And you will have a beautiful frunk instead of an useless engine in the front. Hybride is OK but phev is non sense.

Even hybrid is no sense nowadays
Lets just try to admit one important thing: Ccs fast charging is NOT working as good as filling up peterol. One day it probably will, but as it is today it is not even a competition (due to so many factors).
A Hybrid, really?!? Hope it was the last Hybrid for this channel 😅 Nice car but an unusable Hybrid. Hope there is an electric version too.

Agreed. But it was interesting seeing a PHEV with such huge battery. This is far more realistic "transition" vehicle for conservative buyers than many other PHEVs out there. Though what I always say - don't worry about those fearing transition, their time will come as more EVs are being bought and infrastructure is developed.

@@basedw Yep totally agreed 160 km of what seemed to be mostly highway driving is really good, not to mention the charging is pretty good for a PHEV if someone needs to top off while running errands for some reason during the day. For a lot of places where the charging infrastructure is nonexistent or meh at best but the owner can charge at home or work this would be perfect.
No hybrids please. Hate the complicated tech. Hybrids also carries the downsides of both EVs and ICEs. So, no no ..! 😊
That s bad car?!
