Hastings Seafront & Old Town Tour

Welcome to Hastings where we start the tour at Hastings Pier, Which claims to have the largest beer garden in the UK! It's known for the 1066 Battle of Hastings, fought on a nearby field where Battle Abbey now stands. The Norman ruins of Hastings Castle, once home to William the Conqueror, overlook the English Channel. East along the shingle seafront of Stade beach, Hastings Fishermen’s Museum and Shipwreck Museum document maritime history. The Jerwood Gallery shows contemporary art.

    A great place to visit on a sunny day, lots of historic buildings including the fisherman museum and stories of the Smugglers. The old town is quirky but Hastings' new town has had alot of shops closed down and ovetime has deteriorated.

    Hastings has so many cool events. Jack in the Green during the last weekend in April-1st of May., the Pirate weekend in July, last year it was so hot so me and my kids decided to play ship wrecked pirates lol. You'd swim with your pirate clothes on and you'd dry as you were walking about. Then you have the Bonfire procession in October, Google the events for exact dates. 😊❤

    Not quite correct Vernon - they would store them in the "Net Shops" but not dry them there as they would rot. They dried them on the beach and stored them in the huts when they were dry.

    @Anakinuk0072 жыл бұрын

    The pier did have a massive building down the end for events, a bingo hall, a multitude of little shops similar to Eastbourne pier and a small pub near the front. It burnt down conveniently days before the insurance ran out, privately owned by a foreign investor. After a lot of politics was repaired and ownership reclaimed. The structure itself needed a lot of money spent on it, therefore wasn’t the funds to build much on top. The idea is in the summer to hold concerts, have a string of big names every year (90s/00s bands) so they need the space. Lol I’ve lived in Hastings nearly twenty years I should go walk about. Normally I only go to places I want to, so miss everything in between. The town has had much investment and has vastly improved from what it was, and is still improving every year. Much to do with it is attracting people from all over, well to do Londoners the bulk of them spending money and taking some pride in their properties and gardens. Parking is an issue unfortunately especially in the summer - the rates have gone up which locals like myself refuse to pay. The main town centre is nothing exciting so I rarely go there unless strictly necessary. For tourists all you really want is the Old Town area, the seafront, and the pier although what’s there changes frequently. And the pier is the opposite end of town it’s a pretty long walk! You’d be lucky to get a parking space anywhere near it at any time of year, hence that’s another place I rarely visit merely drive past.

    Great video as always Tim, Those huts were used for net drying, dating back to the 16th century and grade 2 listed, Sorry to spoil the illusion of Ye Old pump house but ... It's not very old LOL. The Delux building on the seafront was originally a theatre and then later a cinema, Now bingo and amusements. Anyone interesting in running, there is a Park run, 5k along the seafront, at 9 every Saturday morning, It's free and you just have to register on line and print off a bar code if you want to get your time in the results, A great way to start a weekend break, Especially someone who is as fit as you Tim, always running up steps ! :-)

    Yup where I live pretty much, the old cinama was also a snooker club, Also Byzantium Vampia movie was filmed in parts of Hastings. Fair play you said some nice things about it. St Mary's the building with the clock below is now closed which is upsetting to see there not making enough money to stay open. I gigged there with a band and yes The Pump House is haunted mostly downstairs, Sealife Center you missed that's cool, Smugglers near the castle is great to don't know if it's still open. Don't know if you done Royal Victoria Hotel St Leonards yet if not be intrested in seeing that. Also Banksy has an artwork acroos the road from the Royal Victoria on the beach.

    The old pier had a bit more character than this new one, as I remember it from when I lived in Hastings in the early '70s, albeit in that slightly seedy retro seaside style! I remember going to see Genesis in the big dancehall there, and for a short time I had a part time job calling the bingo. "Legs Eleven, All the Threes, Thirty-Three" and so on... it was a hoot! You should explore more of the Old Town, there's more to it than just George St (?) where you walked. It really is the best part of Hastings. And check out the Jack-in-the-Green Festival that happens around May Day. :-)

The Goat Fish café on the seafront is popular. Defo try a pint up the FILO in the old town and perhaps get the bus to Rye nearby and Camber Sands is absolutely fabulous. Lots of History here. When I went last year I was disappointed by the drunks and druggies in the centre. This is true of any city, though in the UK. You don't get it in Italy and Portugal, for example.

    At 5:50. "As you can see, the beach is pretty busy!" Er, busy? Heaven help us if the beach was deserted! Other than that, Hastings is a lovely historical resort. I took my wife for a day there during our courting days. 23 years ago, the pier was very different. There were far more side-stalls and no beer garden.

    Actually made me a little homesick and I moved away almost 9 years ago! The town itself isn't great, but the seafront and old town are really nice. It's a great place for a weekend away or a long weekend. On the West Hill you have the castle, but also the Smugglers Caves, which are worth a visit. I think the West Hill lift has been out of action for quite some time, so the other option you have is the massive set of stairs which are just to the left of the lift - I used to climb them a lot as a kid, as I lived up there. It's definitely a work out, but worth it as the views are great.

    I was born & brought up in St Leonards & Hastings in the 80s & 90s before moving to Cardiff in 2000. When I was 18 I lived & worked un the Pump House for a year. It was indeed built in the 50s by a Canadian businessman. Parts of the very back of the building are far older but they are not accessible to the public. I'm not one for ghosts & spirits but to this day, on the rare occasions I have a nightmare, it is always about a dark hidden basememt under the cellar (which is actually ground floor level). I always wake up before I find out what is inside the tunnel but I sense it's intensely evil. When I lived there I was told stories about it being haunted & I know the wife of the manager before me committed suicide in the room that was my bedroom (front top). You could do a pull up on the beam & see the still fresh rope mark in the dark wood! I don"t think I spent a single night in that place sober. Feel comfortable talking about it 27 years on as I expect all those involved have now passed or are too old to be reading KZread comments. Anyway, Hastings looking really nice in this video, but then I guess most places look good in the sunshine. I currently have a major case of homesickness & am planning a trip down in April to catch up with old friends & get the homesickness out my system. It is such an interesting town. Other places I've lived have been great but none have the same layers of quirkiness. Rough around the edges but charming & deeply ingrained in my DNA.

    I visited Hastings twice back in October when i stayed at Combe Haven holiday park and it does have a brilliant beach but when I visited the pier was closed but I had a great paddle in the sea and quite steep getting in as so many pebbles the town is OK but I didn't see the old town sadly if I did I would of visited it aswell but Eastbourne is my favourite I also visited Brighton twice before too

It's a beautiful part of the country you should try and visit it . Take a look on Google it will show you . I love miniature railway's when we were on holiday in snowdonia north Wales all I kept going on about was the miniature trains lol 😀. Much to my husband and daughters dismay. ..was there in 1985 as a student. on the pier was a hugh disco only to enter with a certain student pass at the weekends, we did not had it from our "school". So we waited at the entrance of the pier for students leaving the disco and took the student passes from those who were in Hastings at the end of their "scholarship" lmao. Cut open the edge, pushed our pictures in glued it..weekend after.. hello to the club until our last day in Hastings. last memory of a bulding there was the "little piece of cheese".. nice time nice girls good music, food- i dont´care, was good for me tho.
