No harm in a gear review sometimes! And kudos to Thomas for hiking several miles to do it, that’s a lovely and rare thing in the KZread community. It’s about the journey, after all.

Happy that you took us on this hike with you, Thomas. I agree with the tighter view on that tree. Good shot. Good straight forward review of the 'Blad, too. Great camera for certain jobs but certainly not an all 'round implement. I shot medium format film for many years and know about the advantages and restrictions of that format. Great images but sacrificing a good deal of versatility. Thank goodness digital happened along and brought the image quality and versatility with it.

I think the softness towards the edges could be down to the sensor stabilisation. I've experienced that sometimes with wide angle lenses on cameras with that feature. And the lenses have been sharp edge to edge on a tripod with the stabilisation off.

Hasselblad is one of the camera and gears you dream about but personally I can’t imagine buying I would be terrified that I accidentally scratch it or if my right hand decides “oh sorry I dident realize I held on to something sorry I drop it” Thanks for another great video

This camera and the 21mm deliver poetry together. The 45P is generally considered a soft lens though.

I couldn’t justify the cost of that kit, especially with the superb quality of Nikon “Z” glass. 100MP is quite enticing, but it also doubles storage capacity - a beautiful kit I might add. My solution for a field kit is to leave the f/2.8 glass home, and pack the f/4 glass - 14-30, and 24-200 “z” glass. Cuts the weight beyond half and still gives some reach when needed. Great video as always!

My personal kit for travel is to only take my smallest pair of lenses, my 50mm f/1.9 and my 135mm f/3.5. It does leave me without any wide lenses though, due to my 28mm and my 35-70 being a little bulkier, but saves me carrying my heavy 70-210 or any of my long telephoto primes.

Wonderful video, Tom. I'd LOVE to do the kind of hikes you do, and I admire your dedication to your work. Like you, I can't be swayed by the lure of the mega-megapixel medium format cameras because they all lack long glass. I shoot most of my images with a 100-500, so a Blad or GFX just wouldn't cut it. I like the orange shutter button, though...

For me, the value in renting/using a Hasselblad (the digital ones) is their not the megapixels or image stabilization, but how the camera handles color and its massive dynamic range. (that being said, it's all nice to have) If they made a proper 70-200mm equivalent, the system would be incredible. (pretending I could afford it for a second)

As an XD2 user for landscapes I have to say the 45 Portable lens is a brilliant thing in its own right but not for landscapes - its concave front element does some very odd things - better to go for the new three lenses - once they have released the 90mm

Nice to see you’re having another go with the Hasselblad system, it was a nice video and I feel we would have seen more of you had a longer lens for it. It’s a nice camera but the lens choices for reach just lacked for me so I’ve gone away from hasselblad. For me this channel of yours is more a photography and adventure channel. Gear reviews are certainly not your thing as you’ve mentioned countless times before but it is nice to get out with something different. Hopefully you’ll be able to go over to Sweden and do what someone mentioned in the comments as that sounds sick! Also the 45p is considered the cheapest lens in the X lineup, I’ve heard of it not performing like the other glass.

Great video as always. I use the OM systems OM-1 and can take several lenses hiking as the system is very portable. Yes it’s 20mp but also has an 80mp hi-res mode and works well for landscape photography. As with all cameras it too has it’s caveats. Can’t recommend it enough though. But....each to their own 😊. Thanks for sharing this tech review.

I went to om-1 as I love walking but not the weight of bigger systems - amazing camera but appreciate for many wouldn’t be on the list. It does offer handheld high res mode at 50mp and tripod high res at 80mp from its 20mp sensor. So many amazing computational features and cracking lenses

Although it’s unlikely I’ll ever buy a camera like this, I’m curious how this Hasselblad compares to the Fuji GFX system!

I got and use both. They are so very different and the image files looks very different too. I use them both professionally hasselblad for the sublime absolute top notch image quality and gfx for the versatility with zoom lenses. If I had to pick one it would be the hasselblad. I bought into gfx while I had the d1xII due to need for image stabilisation. Now with the x2d there are no need. Both are fantastic cameras and you have to shoot with them yourself to really find out how different they are.

@@mikaelackelman Couldn't agree more. I too have ended up running both systems by a ludicrously expensive accident.Same sensor, very different shooting and processing experiences. Since I don't use LR, just C1 I have made a rod for my back with X2D files. The fuji Gf lens line up is well ahead in scope and versatility but it too has problems. The 45-100 is , I find, just phenomenal for mountain shots. Its not a lens one worries much about shooting at f16 to preserve DOF. Conversely, the 100-200 is too soft from about 120-30 mms onwards so I am disinclined to pack and haul it up mountains. The 250mm prime is a thing of wonder at f 6.3/7.1 but it cannot be described as versatile. Id probably go for the X2D and nothing else if they could introduce a wide angle zoom of calibre and a short telephoto but there seems no sign of either on any lens road map.

The X2D having an internal SSD is a thing of wonder. I miss my GFX system with the 250 I had to sell a while back but really enjoying the simplicity of the Hasselblad. You have one single AF point but can use the massive screen to move it around even looking through viewfinder. As long as you keep the green af box over the subject, it does fairly well with what I remember from the GFX. I haven’t pushed the 3 fps much yet on the x2D but is a very fun camera to use with the new 55 2.5 v lens. Can’t afford much else. Maybe a longer lens in the future.

Wish hasselblad has more versatile lens line-up, the current primes make it feel like they are still stuck doing studio and portrait work. Maybe they can take a page or two out of Fuji's book

I got the Hassy "Adventure" Light Field kit which is the same - X2d, XCD 4/21, XCD 45P BUT in addition you gat it in a hard case with a Black Rapid strap. I love it!

It seems that your wish is their command! Firmware 2.0 was released yesterday and includes visible crop modes including a couple of the more common panoramic crops.

If you compare the weight of both cameras and point out that the Nikon, despite the memory card, weighs 200 g less than the Hasselblad X2D, it would have been fair that the 200 g additional weight included an internal 1 TB SSD hard drive. Hasselblad also offers lenses that are said to have been specially developed for the X2D 100c and that fit "better". The XCD series XCD 2.5 v The image quality of the X2D, with an XCD 2.5 55v, is simply phenomenal, both in terms of color reproduction and the richness of detail. Since I'm a "viewfinder", the somewhat imprecise and cumbersome shifting of the focus [ ] rectangle bothers me a bit, I have set up a corner of the touchpad as a shifting zone for viewfinder shots, you can also click on the "wheels", right side, front and back use, I haven't tested that yet because I'm there use the aperture setting on one wheel and the EV setting on the other wheel ( standard Hasselblad setting ) I only use the XCD 2.5 55v and am very satisfied. However, I "hate" lens changes. I have a whole box of lenses for my analog cameras, I only ever used one, 50mm 1:1.4, so I can't tell if you need more lenses. But if you're like me 1 camera 1 lens takes moreover, included in the price the photo editing software "Phocus" and the 1 TB SSD, permanently installed from Hasselblad at no extra cost, I don't think the Hasselblad X2D 100c is extremely expensive.

Nice video and what a hike! Personaly, I would be nervous to have the camera on the bag like this, in case of a fall.

I think you should make a workshop in Sweden. There are many following you in Sweden. It could be combined with a Hasselblad visit and sponsorship. I can give you the contacts to make this happen. My first idea is a kayaking trip on the westcoast of Sweden in mid-late may. A archipelago that UK can only dream about. .

Great honest review! I agree, with a 100MP camera they should have the aspect ratio cropping guides to assist with compositions. Bummer about the softness of the 45mm lens. Perhaps some camera movement at that shutter speed? It's hard to tell on YT, but immediately when you flashed that image on screen my thoughts were "it's soft." Anyway, always enjoy your videos. About your findings with the 45mm f/4 near the end (the gorgeous panorama) I have owned that lens since it came out, and it is sharpest wide open, and gets less and less sharp as you stop it down. As you pointed out, at f/8 it is very noticeably softer than it is at f/4 or f/5.6. Always shoot that lens wide-open. Thanks for the hiking tour out there. You live in an incredibly beautiful place! (Oh, and Hasselbald just released firmware 2.0 that among other things adds viewfinder crop modes).

I just looked at a review of this lens, and they show the edges are sharp until f/16.

2:25 WOW the detail at 4k is amazing 5:09 I love the monochrome conversion, fabulous image 5:35 yes a better image and the tree is much more dominant thanks for sharing!

Tom. You are real lovely wonderful photographer to listen to and follow on your adventures. Bravo. Ps just sold off my Nikon z gear and traded for Hasselblad XDii I’m almost 70 but what the heck it’s a magical beast . I’ll roam mountains in northern New Mexico w it 😎

Great video as always. One thing I hate about KZread is the video quality settings. I got 2/3 of the way into your video and was saying wow the video quality is bad. But up to that point I was just thinking he is on a hike and maybe has a cheap camera taking the video. But at that point I also decided to check the settings and seen that it was at 480p. I set it to 4K and it was great again. This will likely last a few weeks and it will again revert to low quality. Got to love KZread for the quirks.

Beautiful imagery and fun video! I'd REALLY like to see you compare to the Fuji GFX 100S....with that you get same 100mpix sensor as Hassy, but save $$$, and you have more lens choices...even zooms. I believe you also get even more stops of stabilization between IBIS and lens stabilization. Also, you can look to adapt manual lenses to it....if you want some LONG lenses...

Its a good looking camera producing great images for sure. My light weight kit it the GFX-100s + GF 45-100mm + GF 20-35mm. But then, I don't do lots of hikes, nor multiple days hike.

Update: the new firmware update (v2.0) does include custom crop modes and 1:1 is the first option

Feeling like there’s been a “lot” of gear reviews promotions. I could never afford most of the ones you talk about.

Agreed....can't relate to it.....photography is about the experience of the outdoors, capturing reflections of the world....not gear that most folks can't afford or want....Still, enjoy watching Thomas Heaton's images and talking about composition etc...

Hi Laura, It probably means this video was not made for you. But remember that Thomas probably need money for living like us and he’s in a position that companies benefit from his status. Only selling one of these because of this video is probably profitable for the company. We need to remember that no one forced us to watch!😉 I understand your comment, ✌️

Hassleblad and Leica should be absolutely no compromise brands, you pay the money but you get absolutely the best glass and cameras that are available, but they in a lot of cases fall short and it’s difficult to justify the money they are charging, that softness is unacceptable at that price point.

It s 1000€ médium format lens, very very cheap, but it s strange this lens has a great reputation to be super sharp

It took Thomas Heaton to post a video about shortcomings of the X2D for Hasselblad to drop firmware with the changes many users have been asking for months eg. crop ratios etc. Would love to see you have another go around after the changes!

A square aspect ratio crop would also be wonderful.

Thank you for the review, Thomas... As usual, Hasselblad is selling for 13.000 euros a camera that you can buy for half of the price as Fujifilm GFX100s. If you need to travel lightweight, GFX100s+35-70mm for less than 1300gr... Thank you Thomas!

I owned the X1D and purchased an X2D. I know many functions are missing from the X2D like crops, focus stacking etc, but I am confident they will be added through firmware updates. The 45mmP lens is compact and light, but the cheapest and lightest lens in the lineup, the 45mm f3.5 is a better lens but heavier. I think you borrowed the 55mm V lens previously and I think that makes a better companion to the 21mm and again is sharper that the 45P. I think the 45P was originally promoted as a lighter street photography lens, in that genre edge sharpness is less important

All of those functions literally just released in V2.0 today, including the desired live histogram. Unfortunately no live histogram from us x1dii users yet anyway

I would have loved to see you try the 135 mm but great video nonetheless! I’m planning on renting a similar combo on my next trip

I have always thought the same about medium format. I am sure it’s better IQ, but it’s not enough for me to deal with the other compromises. Just think how light you would be with a Nikon kit with just an UWA lens or 2 primes. I think most people would struggle to see the difference, especially at normal viewing distances.

Image cropping came in today, one day later, in firmware 2.0.0. And histogram. And better focusing, and..... BTW, the xcd telephoto with tc is amazing.....135 x 1.7....works really well. Tack sharp to the corner. 35-75 is tack sharp too. But they are about the same as a white f2.8 full frame 80-200 type lens...not horrible but you'd need to pick one lens perhaps to carry to equal those two small lenses. I suspect if you tested that body with the new firmware and their 135 with the 1.7 tc you'd be blown away.

Now then Thomas, if you parcel that kit up and send it to me, i will see if i can find the crop settings for you🤷‍♂️no need to thank me . Great work as usual by the way 👍

Pity you never got optimum conditions to put it through its paces a bit more Thomas. I wonder when the update to the Canon R5 is finally released if you will get an opportunity to try it out as I enjoy hearing your thoughts as you have a good benchmark with the z7ii at the moment as we’ve seen with your hands on with z8 and now the Hasselblad

The soft edges are most likely from the IBIS. People always zoom into the centre of the image to see if it’s sharp but that’s easy for a stabilised sensor to achieve, it’s the edges of the frame that suffer as the sensor moves around and stabilises. You’ll notice it in certain corners too depending on how the sensor is having to stabilise in relation to your movements. It’s one of the reasons a lot of folk preferr lens stabilisation instead.

35-75 is tack sharp with ibis "on" standard mode...so the lens is likely the issue...

Maybe the Hasselblad's IBIS has an inferior design. I haven't heard of this complaint from Fuji GFX users.

Ha ! The Firmware update for X2D has just been published this half hour so you do now have the camera equipped with some 'modern' shooting aids. Top of the list is that there are now aspect ratios so the Xpan format is available. A 65:24 jpeg using about 50Mp OOC is now easy to frame up in the field. There is also now a histogram in live view. Astonishing it didn't have one but it does now. You still can't have a horizon/level with a framing grid - its one or the other.

Lovely video as always! And looks like a great hike. The journey is more important than the goal and all that. But I must say I think that's a weird combo of lenses. Very close to eachother, and both kinda wide, not even a proper standard/normal lens. Oh well personally I still would consider trading my left kidney for a HB-kit. But I just don't think thats quite enough to buy one 😅

High end like this Hasselblad, or even a Leica are stuff of dreams. 100 mp is overkill and eats up so much storage space. When going on longer walks I choose between Z7II with 24-200 f4, and Fuji XT5 with 18-135mm. The Fuji saves a little bit on weight & still excellent quality.

Thomas, your going the wrong road with gear reviews. Everyone loves your channel for its photography

Have you tried the Fuji 70-300mm? It’s under 600g so it’s very easy to carry around. Combine it with the kit lens and your pretty much set.

@Thomas Heaton, you'd be happy to hear that Hasselblad has just released a firmware update that includes crop modes (amongst other things), so they listened to you :)

I decided to go the other way and make my gear lighter. I was using a big Nikon D 8 50 with a very heavy Tamron lens, and I love that combination, but I just couldn’t carry an extra body and lenses and all your gear that you need to carry when you go hiking so I downsize to a Fuji XT5 and honestly it is phenomenal and I’ve just had some prints done and they look just as good as the D8 50. You have to be a little bit more careful with dynamic range obviously because it is across in somebody please don’t buy into the hole. You need full frame for landscape photography because it is absolute bullshit you do not. If you know how to expose correctly and you are a decent photographer you can definitely use a crop sensor. I use a Fuji film XT5 and it has seven stops having body stabilisation and 40 megapixels, and honestly you can use a feature in light rain called enhance and you can based in image up to 160 megapixels if you really want to. So for your lighter, where’s the way to go and that’s partly because of my age, I’m 53 and active and I still want to get out and hike and get up those mountains.

The Hasselblad marketing department has dreamed up this kit solely because supply of the new series of lenses (XCD 38mm, 55mm and 90mm ‘V’ series) is almost zero. The new lenses are so much better…but good luck finding them.

I too was wondering what it is. At 9:12 you can see the logo. According to google lens it is a Peak Design Capture Clip. I really should get one of these for hikes. I wonder if anyone has experience with these? I've also been looking at the cotton carrier system but this one looks better.

Really nice, very interesting. I was wondering how does it compare to the GFX 100S (or even the GFX 50S II)? Can it be compare ?

The Z7 with the 24-200 and a latest gen smart phone for ultrawide shots is probably the ultimate light weight setup tbh. Would save ~750g on the Hasselblad.

Waist pouch, hip pack is usually what I search for when shopping for them for British reasons. 😂

X2D firmware 2.0 has crop in camera with variable opacity of the cropped image and it still preserves all 100 MPixels in the RAW file - FYI

If you don't mind vintage / manual focussing lenses, I guess you could find a lot of long telephoto options in older Mamyia (645) / Pentax / Bronica / Pentacon lenses...

so how many miles are added for the back and forth for the videos of you hiking?!

15:20 haha very subtle lol. Although seems odd to have (comparatively) so much 100C content but no GFX 100S stuff when it's the same sensor/ similar IBIS and you already have lenses.

I think Pentax have a 300 mm medium format lenses available with a 2x converter and for the weight the lens is 1.5 kg and the camera is 1.55 kg. It's a workout field kit or a stay at home kit.

The crop option has now been added.

Do you recommend and prefer the Hasselblad X2D 100C Medium Format Digital Camera Body or Hasselblad 907X 100C? Which two lens you recommend for travel and portraits?

In relation to the crop aspect ratio’s Thomas, I believe Hasselblad have just released Firmware V2.0 which includes these.

Lightweight Field Kit, get an Olympus System. Fraction of the price, way less weight and size and being Micro 4/3rds you can get amazing reach from shorter focal lengths. I love my OMD Em1 Mark iii. I take 2 lenses with me, 12-40 f2.8 and 40-150 f4 - f5.6. This gives me 24mm-300mm for my wanderings. However, I'm maybe just jealous that there are systems out there that will never be affordable for me. 🙂. Another nice video though.

Thomas, you nearly always shoot on a tripod, right? Is IBIS an issue at all?

Enjoyable video as always, though it does leave me with an open question: Is a 100MP camera even that useful? Scientific applications, perhaps? While pixel peeping on a monitor can be fun, I fail to find any serious, real world application for doing so. Most of my images are intended to be viewed in full, possibly after a bit of cropping/aspect ratio alteration. 100MP means that a 1x1m enlargement would have a linear pixel resolution of 0.1mm. Is that ... even useful, except for bragging rights? Most people's eyes wouldn't by far be able to resolve that from any viewing position, where the whole image could be enjoyed. A 24MP sensor would by comparison have a linear resolution of 0.2mm (again, if the image was square...), which is still more than you need. Or not? Full disclosure: Not a pro photographer by any means. 😊

Interesting that the field kit includes their older lenses and not the new ones that came out with the X2D albeit there wasn't a 21mm. Apart from price the draw back is not having the longer focal length. Fuji do a 250mm and a teleconverter for the GFX system, and that's the longest I've seen
