Hasselblad X2D 100C Review - A Road Trip Across England

Two years ago I first stepped into the world of medium format digital with the Fuji GFX system, and I quickly fell in love with the larger sensor. Ever since I’ve always been curious about the camera models from Hasselblad. So, when I got the chance recently to spend a few weeks testing their flagship camera, the X2D 100C, I thought, what better way to put it through its paces, than to take off on a multi-day road trip across England.

    I have the Hasselblad 907x. Great camera. But I find myself leaving it at the house in lieu of my X100F because one gets in the way, and the other doesn’t. I enjoy the 907x, but it’s definitely a first generation product. I’m hoping that what’s learned in the X2D can be applied to its successor.

    Kyle, my man! I've watched all the X2D videos out there as they rolled out over the last few month, some good some not so much. Interestingly, even though I already own the X2D and love it so much more than I did my X1D II (my X2D is my all-time favorite camera, because it inspires me to get out to explore everyday), I still watch anything new that pops up. I was quite pleasantly surprised to see this video from you and it is now my favorite of all of them, as your work most closely fits in with the subjects I typically photograph. Great work, Kyle.

    I think most of us want to see Hasselblad succeed and continue developing the mirrorless medium format cameras we all dream of. But, there in lies the problem, for most people this camera system is a dream. While I understand Hasselblad probably wasn't expecting to sell a ton of these cameras and need to make enough for R&D and to fund future projects, but they have to get the price point figured out. The kit you're slinging right there is a $15k kit (before taxes) and just makes it incredibly niche camera. I'm willing to bet even working professionals would take a big gulp before pulling the trigger on this kit. Unfortunately most reviews end the same way...its a beautiful camera but I can't afford it. I can't wait to see what Hasselblad does next and hopefully they can bring more people into the iconic brand. Great video as usual, Kyle!

    First video on the X2D that I really enjoyed. Love the images that you made with this camera. Did you do a lot of post processing on those environmental portraits or was it mainly about balancing exposure and contrast?

  • @KyleMcDougall

    @KyleMcDougall

    9 ай бұрын

    Thank you. Just balanced the exposure, and then I did just some 'film' presets on them, which I then toned back. The tough part about using a new camera system for a relatively short period of time, is that it takes a while to understand and learn how to work with the files. So there was some experimenting.

For myself, especially in the cold, e.g. when capturing northern lights, this is highly relevant.

    Did you find you got used to the focus implementation? (screen swipes, etc)? One of my concerns with this camera is the lack of joystick combined with lack of face/eye detect, focus-tracking, combined with focus-by-wire lenses if you switch to manual. I have the 907x, and find focusing on anything that moves really hard (harder than a Leica M, for example). Most of your work seems to have been either posed portrait, or static subjects where this is less of an issue. Thanks.

    What about AF point selection? I think the X2D is fantastic for a lot of reasons but the one thing that keeps me from getting it is that I've seen/read that to pick an AF point, you have to touch the screen. That might be okay for landscapes on a tripod, but it seems kind of wonky to do it that way while trying to do portraiture, street stuff, etc.

    With 7 stops of image stabilization it was a bit strange to see the tripod in so many scenes when you can probably show handheld up to at least 2 seconds if not up to 4. The beautiful images are appreciated…makes me think about upgrading from X1D II.

    I've been tempting to switch to Hasselblad from my Fuji GFX system because of the color. How do you feel about the color out of this camera? is it easier to post process? Anyways, really enjoy your content and love your grading of the video and your photos. Mind if I ask what preset you use with your gfx photos?

    You may want to wait out the next Fujikina (Sep. 12/23) for the announcement of the GFX100 v2. The sensor is supposed to have a number of improvements regarding colour and dynamic range, but keep the same resolution. I am doing a multi-year project photographing waterfalls and I can only zoom with my feet so much before I go over a cliff or back into a tree, so Hasselblad’s lack of zoom lenses keeps me from switching.

    I really did enjoy the colour of the Hasselblad and the simplicity of having the one 'profile'. The Hasselblad files seemed a bit easier to get to a point that I was happy with, but of course, the GFX files still grade very well, and at the end of the day, if you're tweaking to a personal style, they're probably going to look very similar, just like with all cameras.

On a different note, what is with photographers in the UK playing the same rambling background music? I thought I was watching a Thomas Heaton video for a minute? Cheers!

    I use a GFX 100s so am naturally curious about the Hassy. But no focus joystick? No Screen tilt? Makes no sense to me. The only thing that tempts me are the leaf shutter lenses for using flash in strong daylight. But that's not gonna make me part with 11-15k. For that money, I could buy a light that would overpower the ambient light at standard sync speeds.

    Yes, the vignetting is not best. However vignetting can easily be fixed in post, and as stated in previous comment, the priority may have been on developing a light and compact lens. However I did not notice any flaws in sharpness in the video. Did I miss something?

    You talk a bit about "color science" and how Hasselblad is different/pleasing to you. Are you using 'blad's software to process the RAW output? Or has 'blad given you DCP and/or LUT files that you load into LR or PS? I'm curious. Of course I'll scan your feed for this information, but in the event it's not there, I thought I'd ask. [Edit] I see that 'blads used to come with something called Phocus software and that the color maps are embedded XML. Is this what you are using?

    I've always wondered what the benefit was of using a medium format digital body. For film there was an argument, but for digital, with some full frame sensors pushing 60+ megapixels now, and with a variety of lenses that dwarf the offerings on medium format systems, is there really a point to own one unless your a dentist or you charging 10-30k a day to big brands to shoot their ad campaigns.

  • @zest.b6127

    @zest.b6127

    It’s not just about the resolution. Bigger sensors (whether digital or film) behave in a different manner in terms of optics and physics due to how they gather light. Depending on the end goal they can be useful or cumbersome, for someone like Kyle that cares about detail and render that fits the style. While to a street photographer or someone that tries to recreate a more painterly look the amount of detail could be a burden. To each their own, but one sensor size cannot replace the other.

    @@zest.b6127 But in the film days when you shoot large format you had access to movements, as far as I know there is no tilt shift lenses that exist for medium format systems. In terms of depth of field, the shallowest lens f1.9 according to their website. Which is probably the equivalent of a f/1.2 lens from nikon/canon/sony. I'm not disagreeing with you, but i still stand by my comment that if you are using a camera on this level, you either are charging 10-30k a day shooting ad campaigns for big brands or you are a dentist.

    I have personally found Hasselblad colour better than Fuji colour which can in comparison look a little cartoonish in some colours like reds and oranges. More natural. But Fuji colour has definitely got better in recent iterations. I feel that's the selling point over the Fuji. But the Fuji being more usable, modula, more lenses, working with capture one etc.

Everything that stood out to me is in this: electronic shutter when adapting lenses, lack of hard stops with the aperture ring, and the price. Other than that, for my way of working, it was great.
