Wow that's depressing to know that this game and games like it make so much money through predatory physiological tricks rather than really engaging game play. :(

Casinos are actually more honest tapping the lizard brain because they do let some win money rather than just spend money. Apparently if you only spend money and cannot win money it is somehow not gambling!

Note that these mobile companies spend a huge amount of their budget on user acquisition - not marketing, pure purchasing of users. ~25% of that revenue was probably spent on it. They spent hundreds of millions. This is how these f2p games have worked for a very long time - going back to Facebook games. Once you can extract more revenue from a user than you pay to get them, you open the money spigot and go to the moon.

It's also how Google search ads work, and Steam "featured products", and everything else... The developers and publishers might make a hit but the middle-men ALWAYS win and get their cut, no matter what. Depressing.

No matter if TTRPG fans like it or not, the shift to focus on digital (licensing) seem to have been the correct one for Hasbro's financial income.

Okay... but what about their costs, both current and projected? Honestly, this seems more like a mirage of progress than anything. Hasbro really hurt themselves and strengthened their competition with blunder after blunder. Until they fix that, they will continue to struggle.

This is why Hasbro, and Wizards, are abandoning tabletop for vidya and NO ONE has a plan to fill the void that comes when Wizards pulls the pillar propping up that medium.

In the best case scenario Hasbro from this 2B gets 130M. This story reminds me how people was over hyping Nintendo's revenue from Pokemon GO. Of course in case with Hasbro IP ownership are simple, but they only get regular licensing fee.

The fact that you're surprised by this game is a good sign for you, as it means you're not exposed to the standard mobile crap. Worked 5 years in the mobile game industry, and every (upper management) decision was based on how to brainfuck the "players" into expending more while providing the thinnest slice of playability possible with loaded dice. Gamers making games they wouldn't want to play.

I wish this were true but the reality is this just subsidizes the next attempt to get 3 billion, if it "helps" any other "worthy" product (all things that the MBAs running Hasbro don't believe in) it's just a happy accident.

This is sadly not new, the VG Community has had to wrestle with these practices for a while now, these are predatory tactics used to target what they consider “whales” big spenders with compulsion disorders or gambling addictions. The Jimquisition has a long history of videos dealing and documenting these trends and predatory tactics

This also speaks to the stupidity of trying to turn WotC into a game based on the mobile model their CEO is so acquainted with. You can slap any IP on these things and if they capture lightning in a bottle, then they capture lightning in a bottle. These mobile game users are their own distinct audience, there's no intelligent reason to try to convert another paying audience to quit the product they like and become mobile game users. You just target mobile game users with your mobile games, and target your other customers with the products they like.
