I'm approaching this more as an engineer when I was transitioning from my large format analog desk to a smaller footprint digital desk was the lack of tactile interfacing on the digital paltform. Being able to manipulate a much wider set of controllers quickly, conveniently and easily was always important to my workflow. I'm not a guitar player either. I like how this has both a touch screen and rotary encoders, which letd you tweak things in real time while still engaged with the instrument, as you pointed out. Plus, I noticed XLR outputs, which could mean one less bit of gear to deal with on stage or in the studio by avoiding a direct box. I bet the unit has a "lockout" mode so you can disable the rotary encoders when you're playing and you don't to have things get altered when using the foot switches as foot switches. I look forward to hearing more.

I bought a Fractal FM9, the problem I see with QC is that all demos are metal and I play many different style. They always talk about the sound of the amp, but In the other hand there was like a recurrent comment in demos comparing Fractal and QC that was the feeling of the Fractal, of the dynamic range and a more real experience of the response of an amp, and now I have one, I am impressed with the feeling playing it, it really feels like a real amp. Also most the demos forgets to talk about the effects, and most of the famous guitarrists that uses Fractal, they use it for the effects. I read the manual and options of the two devices and I saw Fractal have much more possibilities for the same price in 2023, more effects, more amps and cabs, routing options and MIDI configuration i incredible. I am sound designer and musician so Fractal give me a lot more possibilities to go into detail. While deciding which device to buy I found that Fractal is always updating the firmware, and I read the log change file and found that they are not the tipical two or three things update, they really work on a list of updates bugs, add new things, new amps I have the sensation that they take a lot of care of the units and is normal, when you have customers like Vai, Satriani, Govan, Mayer, Fripp, Petrucci and a big list, there is a status they have to mantain. I bought the unit in Europe and and the person that sent the unit was supernice, and when I had a problem with the delivery company she was there interested in the process, a lot of companies don´t care about customer once they send the unit. So in 2023 I don´t think AxeFX is obsolete and they are even selling a lot of FM9 and FM3 that are the same unit as Axe III but with difference cpu and other limitations.

I had hd500. Switched to plugins and got WAY better sound and feel. I'm not saying hd500 is bad and it might of course sound as good when dialed correctly, but I got my sound from plugins so effortlessly compared to hd so that makes plugins (and quad cortex etc.) better.

I change everything via the app, if I had to make a change live on the front panel it would take me a moment to work it out. Those knob switches are actually pretty cool for a foot unit. I'll assume you have to go to an edit mode for that stuff to change.

The "A" mix has some high fizz that I learned to associate with digital equipment... or I'm just making a fool of myself :) That said, I think that Kemper, AxeFX and QC are all high end gear which provide great sounds, so I don't think it's useful to determine which is better. They all are. The two main aspects that make a real difference are the interface and the ecosystem. The QC has a clear advantage in term of interfaces here because it's the more modern one but I see some downsides, like the need to put the unit on the desk to tweak it and then on the floor to use it with all the cables attached on it. Yeah, it's a minor thing, but on the long run it could be a hassle to deal with. About the ecosystem, I think that those who bought professional Kemper profiles will prefer to stick with that unit to get the most out of the money they invested while those who bought Neural plugins will be delighted at the opportunity to use them without a pc. To each their own, I guess.

I like the user interface on the Neural DSP. I own some of their plugins and like them. I have the SLO and the Fortin Cali Suite. They are really good. Difficult to tame. However, I love my FM3. I spent less on it than the cost of the Quad Cortex, it also sounds amazing, it doesn't take up a bunch of space, and it is easy to use for live stuff. It also has a full library of amplifiers that I want to use. It has amazing effects and a lot of options (like adjusting the amp's voltage). Neural DSP doesn't offer the range of options I use. I am a little disappointed that we don't have the A/B comparison in this video, though. Would like to hear them in the mix too. I also like the Quad Cortex. It sounds really good. Can't tell which is the real amp and which is the sim in this video. I am pretty sure they nailed it. Nice work, to be sure. Their SLO sim is maybe less impressive. But, it still sounds really close. It is probably indistinguishable from the real thing in a mix too.

I've got a powered Kemper head, it was a total improvement over a regular amp for my gigs (mainly weddings) and recording. I love it. The Quad however to me has it beat on almost every level, except that it's too new to have 3rd party captures. I've got some fantastic profiles in my kemper from Tone Junkie, Micheal Nielsen and M. Britt etc. If those guys start doing captures for the Quad then I think it's only a matter of time before it becomes the de facto leader. If they somehow add an app so you can record and edit sounds without having to put the unit on your desk then it's a full victory for me. I think in terms of tonal accuracy they all do a brilliant job, so it's actually a less important selling point than the UI, size etc

I just bought an AxeFX 3 about a month ago and I don't regret it one bit. Fractal has been around for over a decade making hardware and doing firmware and software for that hardware. They are a small company but they have the experience to get it right. This is Neural's first hardware product ever, and I don't really have faith that they will be able to deliver a quality software and firmware experience to go along with it. They're an even smaller company than Fractal, and I've already seen / heard them touting features that will "be coming soon" yet don't appear to be on the release schedule for a very long time, for example the ability to control your QCT from your mobile device, save presets from your Neural plug-ins and import them to the QCT, list goes on -- and ultimately with products like this, it's the software and firmware and features contained within -- that will define how well it can actually perform. In terms of sound -- remember, these products are all using the same chips, and basically all doing amp modeling and IR processing the same ways, so they're all going to sound good, more or less, with differences here and there, of course, but in general, they're all going to sound very good. Back to software -- Fractal's AxeEdit software, for example, is the best in the industry IMHO. It's far from perfect, but it's definitely light years ahead of what everyone else has. Can you even edit the QCT from your computer? Or do you have to use the device itself? I know even Kemper -- after over a DECADE of being on the market, STILL doesn't have software that allows you to actually control the entire unit from a computer. Which is mind boggling, but it shows you just how much of a challenge it is these days on the software development side of things for these companies in the "hardware business" I also really don't see the point of putting a touch screen on a product that is designed to sit on the floor, but that's just my opinion. I would have much rather preferred no touch screen but the ability to control it from a phone or a computer. If they can eventually do both, I'll take another look at it for sure. It sounds great and all but I am more concerned about usability and features, because as I said -- all of these products sound really really great. EDIT: It looks like Neural has recognized that they promised all those features and a desktop / mobile app but they "didn't make it for the launch" -- lol. Exactly as I called it...These features were announced in fall 2019, keep in mind. So yeah, over a year and they couldn't put something together for the launch. TL;dr -- SOFTWARE DEV for hardware is very very hard.

AxeFX III user here :) I have 3 comments: 1) Yes, that user interface is kickass. 2) if you can’t get good album quality high gain and clean tones out of the Neural or the AxeFX or the Kemper or the Helix... just give up. 3) the reason I got the Fractal, and the reason it is still top of the heap for my use is that the effects completely smoke the competition. Short of the Eventide H9000. (Which is in a different class) it still far outstrips all the other rack processors on the market for guitar oriented effects. Oh, and digital gear isn’t obsolete because a new model comes out unless you are trying to be trendy. But I think we all know this.

The Axe3 has Performance Pages where you can put 10 Global and another 10 Per-Preset parameters on the main screen and adjust them with the 5 knobs under the screen for quick access. It was stated they will add this to the FM3 as well. So put Amp Drive, treble etc as well as Delay Mix and any other parameters there either per-preset or have the same options always with Global.

Now, I have a few go to's that I always use and that helps. Although midi switching works ok, it's just not perfect especially in live show situations. Recently I switched to the Styron iridium and discrete pedals and I love this setup. In the studio I record the DI as insurance, lol.

But that's what I'm going with. Big take away here is that both sound absolutely great and useable.
