Has Breitling Ruined The Navitimer? | Watchfinder & Co.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

As a watchmaker, Breitling has changed its direction a few times over the years, trying-and in some cases failing-to keep up with the demands of consumers in an ever-changing environment. One thing has remained true through all of it, however, and that’s the Navitimer, the meat and two veg of the Breitling diet. It’s good, it’s wholesome-and now it’s been changed to something completely different. Has Breitling finally lost it?

In my opinion, yes. The Navitimer is one of the most unique looking watches. Simplifying its utility and aesthetic raises the argument, why not simply purchase a Daytona or Speedmaster if you want a similarly priced and simpler chronograph? I really hope the old Navitimer stays, until I can buy one at least.

The original Navitimer is going nowhere. These Navi 8’s have now been rebranded as the Aviator 8 range as they are modelled on the Aviator range from the 50’s and 60’s. A decision made last year..

100% my words good sir. The old Navitimer is one of my dream watches and, given the fact the others are watches like the A. Lange & Söhne Tourbograph Perpetual, the navitimer is probably the first dream to come true. I love the look, the functions and the history, all of which are in my opinion lost in the new navitimer. The new model still is a beatuful timepiece but the reason to buy it over another watch is lost.

Unpopular opinion..... The Navitimer is a relic of a time passed. I actually fly airplanes for a living and I need a watch that is clear and easy to read. The dial on the navitimer is just to busy to be useful. The “flight computer” bezel is useless in actual operation. If you want a Chrono the Speedmaster is much more readable and useful option. The simpler Breitling Premier Chronos appeal more to me.

Fernando Ramos generally it’s basic arithmetic with some mental math but nothing too complicated. The complex things that used to require a manual flight computer also known as E6B have a lot of use when doing manual flight plans but in the airlines we use much more advanced flight planning computers normally originating from our dispatch center. Weight and Balance and performance has also moved on from paper forms and load sheets to electronic as well. It allows us to do a lot more with performance, load planning and efficiency than we could achieve ever achieve with manual methods.

I would just buy the Navitimer for a collectible piece. Even though modern aeroplanes renders these time pieces obsolete, I find it appealing just because it belongs to an era when slide rule and flight computers are essentials for a pilot. It's a classic. I don't really purchase a watch to be worn all the time. I wear them alternately. The Navitimer is a great watch to be worn in the early evening or late afternoon when you are drinking coffee with your spouse or relaxing beside a swimming pool. If I am flying, will just put my tool watch on. A Casio will suffice. 😁

The first Breitling I ever saw was worn by a WWII fighter pilot. His name was "Jessie" and he used to hang out at Caldwell Wright Airport in Fairfield, New Jersey back in the late 60s and 1970s. If memory serves correct his name was Jessie McKeon, or something similar. Jessie wore a real WWII Navitimer. As a 17-year-old "line boy" who used to fuel airplanes at "Caldwell Wright" (now "Essex County Airport, KCDW, where JFK, Jr. departed) I often wondered how this WWII pilot was able to wear his WWII bomber jacket with perfectly ironed Khaki tan flight officer pants with spit-shined leather boots every day of the week. I heard he used to fly P-51s during the war. The slide rule function on the watch was designed to be similar to a mini-E6B navigator's circular slide-rule but without all the other bells and whistles. It worked. Pilots were able to use their watches to calculate their ground speed, time to the next checkpoint, and other functions the E-6B computer could do. Besides his reputation, the thing I admired most was his WWII vintage Navitimer.

As a massive Breitling fan, I can't help but to turn my nose up at Georges Kern's changes. Yes, Breitling needs to change, that much is known to anyone who pays attention to the market, but I don't think that's the way to go. He's approaching Breitling the way he approached IWC and I don't think that's smart. He's destroying the brand's identity by changing its core watches and logo to cater to potential buyers (especially in the Asian market) that don't even take the brand seriously. You can't make everyone happy, yet he wants to please the Schneider era fans, the vintage fans and people who don't buy Breitlings. And by doing so, he's pushing away the customers that support the brand. Yes, more money is great, but at the expense of your identity and fanbase? I don't think so. Not only that, but he said he'd cut down the number of watches (something that I agree that needs to be done) but then Baselworld comes around and he launches some 10 new watches. This has to be a joke. If you don't think these are bad decisions, just ask yourself if Rolex would change its logo, launch a GMT-Master III without rotating bezel, and start making 44mm watches to cater to potential buyers.

  • @FacPhoto

Zonda I disagree and as an owner of 7 Breitlings, both old and modern, the brand was failing to move with the times. It needed to change and draw from its past rather than the horrible 90’s....with large jangly crap... It’s attracting more people with the Premier range and remodelled SuperOceans. The SO Heritage 2 is their biggest seller. The Navitimer 8 is in fact based on the historic Aviator range and has now been changed to the Aviator 8 - so this video is already out of date.

  • @TechPanzer

    @TechPanzer

    4 жыл бұрын

@@FacPhoto If you're a fan of the brand and you're liking the direction its heading towards then I'm happy for you. You're gonna enjoy it a lot more than I will. You're absolutely right, they needed to move on, but I don't think they're doing it right. I mean, ffs, they're still selling brand new watches with the old logo. This is like Audi selling a brand new R8 with a Auto Union badge. And big watches aren't a bad thing. Yes, they might not be popular anymore, but a lot of people can't wear 38mm watches. Not everyone has princess-like wrists, anything smaller than 44mm looks small on mine. I don't think the Heritage II was a mistake, it's a great watch and I'm happy it's Breitling's best seller. However, the Premier has a name and price issue imo. The name makes you think that it's some high-end Breitling line, but you can get those sub seconds-only versions for *less* than 4k USD. They should move the cheaper Premiers to the Galactic line and keep building the higher-end Premiers. And imo, the Avenger and the Chronomat are too similar. One of them needs to go. But I don't think they should always draw inspiration from the past. Just like with reissues, this makes it seem that all the good watches from that brand were already made and that they have no imagination to create new stuff. They need to reinvent, not reuse. And btw, I see that you didn't watch the video (at least not in it's entirety), because the "Aviator" name change is adressed.

I recall as a young pilot in the 1970s seeing advertisements in the AOPA magazine for a special AOPA made by "Breitling" which was similar to the WWI Navitimer. I recall the early versions of the watch having some reference to AOPA, but I'm not sure. But I recall very early 1970 AOPA magazines advertising "Breitling" watches on their pages as "aviation watches" similar to WWII watches.

I am guessing with calculators and apps no younger person knows what a slide ruler is. But if you are going to take away the true function and soul of a watch have the common decency to at least name a replacement something else. Oh how I wonder who will sponsor the Reno Air Races. I am guessing that the old Breathing AOPA watches will be worth their weight in gold and then some.

Not that I’m the most knowledgeable about watches, but just an anecdote. I’m a young guy, 25 going on 26, who’s been into watches since I was 16. The first watch I ever bought, after saving up for years and getting a big high school graduation gift from my parents, was a Tag Heuer Aquaracer. Why? I live by the ocean and occasionally dive, so I wanted something waterproof and reliable. I also wanted something simple. I looked at simple chronographs, but at the time even a tachymeter seemed a bit too busy. I actually remember seeing a Navitimer at my local watch store when I was researching what to get and was immediately turned off by it. “Too much going on,” I thought. “Too many lines, and intersecting circles, and tiny text I’ll never use.” Cut to now. In the past few years I’ve started learning my stuff when it comes to watch history. I’ve gotten into the vintage Japanese side of collecting, own a few tachymeter watches and even a World Timer from ‘73. And while I still don’t know if a Navitimer is for me, I can certainly appreciate the utility, history and craftsmanship that go into making it a powerful, wrist-portable computational device. The point being, I get that the classic look of the Navitimer could be a turnoff for the younger market, but this redesign strips away everything that made it stand out from the crowd. And it certainly risks losing out on the potential market of collectors who might’ve been building toward adding one to their collection

I do agree with a lot of the comments about the Navitimer DNA being lost. However, if you look closer, there are a few differentiating factors; The bezel for a start, the sub-dials are panda based which although common in a lot of watches still do not come with the overall package the navitimer has such as the B01 and of course the brand name Breitling. Going back to the so called panda dial, this panda dial does have some differentiation of its own. I do think it is a nice addition to the Breitling range giving access to a very old, romantic military chronograph design. I was quite sure that I would never feel the need to own 1 until i starting projecting my future collection with a traditional navitimer in it. I think this model will be a to go piece for second timers, second timers being those that have already purchased a Navitimer.

Short answer: almost. As long as a true-to-form Navi remains available, all is well. As soon as they move away from the timeless design across the board they're screwed

...as someone has prob realized, the new watch is a ringer for the Breitling Premier Reference 765, circa 1946, a three-hand, three sub-dial (3, 6 and 9) hand-wound in stainless steel case.

I like it very much. It's cleaner and better designed for general usability of the mere public. I have owned a good few Breitlings over the years and would like to again. Not sure which one, though I do like the Transocean range. This new 8 is a good move for the company and I wish it well.

They called the model Navitimer 8 in the beginning just for marketing, to attract peoples attention. As a decision of the last minute, and now they correct this and they rename to Aviator. I think both watches have space in Breitling line up, and this new watch is for the people who think the Navitimer has a dial too busy to use everyday, but like to have both in the collection.

They just bring back classic from Breitling's history with some subtle modern twist. Perfect move. Now Breitling is the strongest as I ever remember. I even see some new models from Breitling becoming iconic timepieces. It actually now makes sense to invest into more than one timepiece from Breitling. I am glad about Breitling.

I have an original navitimer and a B1. The navitimer is not only beautiful but it has function. I have been a commercial pilot for 30 years. In my day we were all taught how to use the navigation slide rule so we knew how to use the navitimer and I have done so for many years. Yes, I use all the new toys when flying today and it makes life easier and safer but I know I can revert to the simplicity of pencil and paper and the navitimer if I need to. It is comforting. I have no need of a Breitling that is not a navitimer. Calling a watch a navitimer without a slide rule makes absolutely no sense.

Kern has done well at IWC and I do like the direction in which he is taking Breitling. That clutter Breitlings used to be known for has become unfashionable just like digital watches with calculators, and the functions are of no use in the age of smart watches and smart mobiles. Decluttering is the way forward IMHO, I like the new clean lines.

The "old" Navitimer carried tradition and more importantly, something entirely different from the available chronographs. This new version is everything but that as it's a simple chrono. In my mind, keeping the Navitimer model name was a mistake as it no longer truly one. Perhaps "Breitling ChronoTimer" would be, unfortunately, better suited.

Breitling Navitimer will always be the three subdial chronometer with slide rule and tachometer. That is what makes it legend and a holy grail watch. Its powered by an inhouse engine where as the old ones likely were powered by a ETA/Valjoux 7750. There may be a smaller niche that likes the stripped down "8". But we want the old slide rule and tachometer equipped version.

Hi there, I recently purchased a brand new Breitling B55 watch from an authorised retailer in the UK. I straight had some issues with the watch, one digit was dodgy on the top screen and the bloutooth was acting up too. Went back to the retailer, they sent it to Breitling for repair. I got the watch back, now it looks all fine apart from one thing. When you first turn the watch on, you need to synchronise the time on the displays to the time shown by the hands. I noticed that I have to synchronise every day as the hands tend to fall behind a few seconds every day. Every second day it can add up to a minute or two so if I don’t synchronise hands will show wrong time. Anybody can help me in this please? Is this normal? Anybody has experience with the B55? Thank you in advance, Gary
