    There is no "complete confidentiality". Parents or legal guardians can demand records and information, though many therapists claim "I would never do that". Therapists and teachers and medical personnel are compelled to report suspected abuse under "mandatory reporting" laws, which exist to shield therapists from lawsuits for violating confidentiality when they report abuse to protect their clients. Even HIPAA provides some access to insurers to ensure that therapy which is being paid for was actually provided.

    The Butler lawyer seems to find it suspicious that a trader would confide in a therapist in order to "feel better about the risks he was taking." THAT'S THE WHOLE REASON HIS CLIENT HIRED HER! They don't want their traders to second-guess themselves when making decisions involving millions of dollars, so they have a therapist on retainer to help them deal with the stress of the job. Like Wendy from Billions, she's hired to make sure the traders can unburden themselves, work through their anxieties, and keep the firm running efficiently.

    So I think it’s weird that the opposing counsel had nothing to say in contest to his implications. Like “hey we aren’t trying to force this lady to lie” or anything they just stay quiet for the rest of his deal.

    One of the reasons why I would never see a therapist unless I was absolutely desperate. Everything you tell them can be leaked. Whether it’s by their own mouth or their notes. I’d rather deal with my issues privately and securely then trust a stranger.

  • @cardinalbob1

    @cardinalbob1

    I used to think that, but it takes a lot to get a therapist to be compelled to say anything about a patient/client and therapist is legally/medically bound to maintain privacy. I saw shrink once a week for four years and it was one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life. I only wish I had started 20 years sooner. It’s your life, but I ask you to do some soul searching and consider therapy when or if you need it. At a nearby university I was seen by graduate students getting their credentials under the supervision of licensed teachers and was charged on a sliding scale depending on ability to pay. 💰

    Easily Harvey - if Paula's justification is that she's doing her job and could go to jail otherwise, that's exactly the same logic for Harvey: he's doing his job, and his client could go to court otherwise. Plus, it was irresponsible of her to front a deposition without a lawyer of her own so that she could minimise the damage she did in her testimony, but she did it anyway. Put another way: Paula failed to protect her client, so Harvey had to protect him from her.

    She wouldn't lie because she plays by the rules. She's just upset when the same rules are applied to her under oath. Funny how that works huh? How can she be mad at Harvey for following his own duty to protect his client? Asking Harvey not to do what he did would be the same as Harvey asking her to lie under oath. Paula has no leg to stand on here.
