Harvesting Garlic, White Rot, Radish Issues & Challenging Year Chat: AWATP 20-26 May '24

Tuesday 21 May - an early morning visit to the plot to open up a fellow tenant's and my greenhouse, and looking at our hardneck garlic as it's now ridden with rust and definitely going or gone over... so time to harvest! And with the very rainy weather we're due over the coming days it's best to get them out whilst they're dry... I'm back at the plot in the afternoon, though the rain due in 24 hours came very early, and I decide it's still best to get the garlic out, even if I need to do it in the pouring rain... though I am rather happy with the harvest! I decide to cut back the roots and the stems as with it being damp and these being wet this will help them as I want them to dry as swiftly as possible;
Friday 24 May - I hadn't intended to film today, then Georgie arrived and wanted cuddles, so... and I also look at how our chicory has been munched, as well as the broad beans and our carrot seedlings... I also check on how the garlic is drying in the polytunnel. I also wonder how our radish are doing... they don't seem to be bulking out. I also discuss how I think the year is shaping up and the challenges that quite a few of us growers are having this year;
Saturday 25 May - we have a guest coming over the weekend, though I was keen to get our modular-sown beetroot in, so I was at the plot pretty early again to do this job, and discuss what I've done.

    Lovely garlic haul Paul. Mine are still in at the moment and will leave them for a couple of weeks. Don't mention radish. Exactly the same, I don't know what I do wrong. Mine are half the size of yours so I'm waiting.......I've tried sowing in modules (like Charles Dowding), planting them in groups, sowing straight into the soil, spacing them etc etc.....nothing seems to work. Drives me bonkers 🤣I've also got voles here who are uprooting all my broad and runner beans. On the subject of slug pellets, I put safe organic ones down and they got eaten by the voles, apparently because they have molasses and apple by products in them. Happy days lol !!

    According to "googlay" the radish problem is due to either too much nitrogen, rapid onset warm temps or crowding.

  • @paulsavident

    @paulsavident

    Interesting... this bed hasn't been fertilised since mid-summer, and this is seed tape, so already optimum spacing I guess, BUT the temps have varied wildly in the poly for ages; sometimes 20° plus, but nighttimes less than 8°... 🤔

    Another great episode of Week on the Plot, Paul! ☺️ I've really enjoyed listening to you talk through your week with us. I'm sorry to hear that more of your veggies have been munched on. Wonderful about your garlic.😃 Excuse my ignorance but I'm not an experienced gardener, I was wondering on account of the white rot, will you need to treat the soil at all? I wasn't sure if this is something that could potentially hang around in the soil spoiling further crops. Lovely to see Georgie, again. He's adorable ☺️ I hope you and Richard have a super week. I shall look forward to more from the plot next week.🤗

  • @paulsavident

    The advice is that if you have white rot (onions, garlic... alliums basically) you simply stop growing them for seven to ten years, as the spires can hang around in the soil dormant for ages. 😳 If I did that I would never grow garlic so I'm careful to TRY and harvest when is best for the soil and me, rather than necessarily at the perfect time. 👍😊👍

  • @zoenorman9846

    @zoenorman9846

    Oh goodness, I'm really surprised to hear the spires can remain active in soil for up to ten years. I can totally understand why you wouldn't want to wait that long to grow more garlic. You had a successful batch of garlic this time so your method is working very well. Thank you for explaining. I'm learning such a lot from your channel. 🌼🤗

    What about the old sunken dish of beer to attract the slugs? Also just read this: Sharp grit, ash and bark can help to ringfence your plants, and most slugs will not cross over the barrier. I saw the same thing as Robin - below - about the nitrogen, etc. Good Luck this gardening season. My last two have been crap. ; )

  • @paulsavident

    @paulsavident

    I did think about the beer trick, though then you need to deal with the 'soup'... 😳 I haven't found that grit deters slugs, not bark which they seem to just glide over, though ash is a possibility BUT is not an easy to source resource these days sof central heating and non-burming. 🤔

    What type of radish are you growing, Paul? I learned the hard way that some radish varieties grow above ground instead of under the ground. They also need 6 hours minimum of sunlight to develop the bulb. Your garden looks great considering how much rain you've had. We all need warmer and sunnier weather.

    Could you grow garlic in pots/buckets the same way some people grow potatoes? Just in the sense that it would give you more control over what it's growing in to be able to reduce the risk of white rot? Radish aren't impacted by nutrient levels like some plants ie they put on more growth of leaves rather than "fruit" if the balance is wrong?
