I puchased a new pump and the mist filter was broken off when it arrived. Harvest Right was nice enough to send a replacement without making me return the broken unit. Harvest Right even sent out a new lcd display free of charge even though my unit is over 5 years old. Just wanted to share my excellent experiences with Harves Right! 😁

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was under the assumption (yes, I know...lol) that you 'should' clean the filter if it gets oil soaked but I trust your information because I know you actually do research things first. I thought that HR had instructions on cleaning the filter and WASHING it with water. I have a spare one. I did clean and wash one. I used an air gun to blow most of the water out. I then let it dry out for a week. It still works good.

Harvest Right has developed many procedures' in-house. It's unknown if their information came from their research or from the manufacture. In this case, I contacted Navac. Navac's direction came from the manufacturer. You took great care to insure the filter medium was dry before using it again. Imagen the issues if your filter was still wet when placed back in service.

Despite my better judgement, I let movers move our FD. I am about to conduct the initial tests and think everything will be fine, but they did spill a lot of oil out of my pump into my demister...should have drained it but didn't think they'd be turning it upside down. Am glad I watched this instead of the HR recommended video out of the manual. I ended up using paper towels to pull most of the oil out of the filter element - thankfully there wasn't too much, but still pretty annoying. As always, thanks for the excellent videos. What would cause my vacuum pump to smoke?

  • @louisianacooker321

Thank you for showing this. I have run five batches on my new unit and there has always been oil in the drain water. I changed and discarded the break in oil and now see bubbles in the site glass when the pump is running. Also, when the pump first starts up, the oil level in the site glass goes up above the upper level line for a few seconds before dropping back to a safe running level. I had thought it might be something wrong with the demister but now I am not sure. It will pull a vacuum and works fine but I wonder how much damage those bubbles are doing. I know cavitation will eat a pump up when the bubbles implode. I am going to run it in the test mode and see if I can talk to someone at Harvest Right. Any help would sure be appreciated.

The filter medium (paper), within the demister, is already saturated with oil from vapor from the pump, and will dip down back into the pump through a little check ball and hole near the threads. If you take the outside covering off you may be able to speed up the removal of oil. Oil and water don't mix and I would advise against washing the medium. Let any excess oil dip away.

Hi Phil. I did not use the FD with a premium pump for several months over the summer. Upon first use this early fall the pump ran very hot and there was a hot oil smell throughout the house, which has NOT happened before. (Thankfully no oil mist, as has happened before because I missed replacing a gasket after removing the oil mist filter.) We took apart the filter and noticed the oil had gummed up to a hard consistency in the hole where the pin and ball bearing is located. We replaced the filter with a new one, ran another batch through the FD and had the same problem with the hot oil smell. Could the oil have gunked up inside the pump like it did in the filter? If that is a possibility, can you suggest how I should address that possible problem? Thanks!

Milky color is generally water mixing with oil. Some of the moisture in your food is leaving the chamber and entering the pump. Your food needs to be rock hard frozen before the pump turns on. Here are some things you can do: Pre-freeze your food for 24 hours in a freezer. this is a big money saver. Lower your freeze point and add extra freeze time on your menu. You're not the only one with this problem. There are a few causes. Some simple and some more difficult. Here they are: 1. The internal vacuum pump, within the unit is made up into three sections and doesn't have gaskets. If one of those section is loose the vacuum can draw the oil through a tiny space and atomize the oil into a vapor. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ap56qcyEm7K9Y6g.html 2. Is your gas ballast valve (knob) open? Try running the pump with it closed. 3. Try a different Filter. Navac (Navacglobel.com) has one that will fit the pump. Part number P012005. Go to their website and find a local distributor. 4. Some will put a heavy sock over their pump filter. I hope one of these will help.

Wife wouldn't be happy with oil mist in the air. I used to work at a rental place and when people would rent an air compressor they sometimes needed a water separator to take water out of the air. I'm not an engineer, buy I was thinking if i put hard pipe (steel) off of where the mist filter is located to a water separator and then more pipe over to the mist filter, would it take more of the mist out? I know I'd need to make brackets to support everything. Plus I'd need unions so I could disassemble and reassemble everything. Just thinking outside the box. @@Philat4800feet Unfortunately all 3 of my basement windows are ones that tilt in just a little bit. The soil on the outside of the house is right at the very bottom of the window and the other one has a window well around it on the outside. If I opened them and tried to rig a vent to the outside, I may end up with critters getting into the house. I've caught mice in traps around the house. Other critters in catchem alive traps. And I live in town. The skunk was my scariest catch. The basement walls are lined with shelving. There is a space in the middle of the basement, that has cupboards as well and at the end of those is where I was going to set the freeze dryer. At the rental company that I worked, they used a Wilkerson inline water separator. It was just a canister with 3/4" Chicago fittings. I believe it just had baffling on the inside and as the air flowed thru, moisture would deposit on the baffles, flow to the bottom and then you could drain out the bottom. I'm hoping I don't get the dreaded mist, but if I do, I guess I could rearrange the basement. Get a 4" diamond core bit, drill a hole up high through the blocks and make a vent to the outside. That's a lot of work. My FD is ordered, I'll know in a couple of weeks.

Rebuilding the pump? Think you forgot to mention how you broke it! We've solved one mystery of the odd oil filter, only to be followed-up with another mystery concerning an apparently broken pump! The manufacturer should have documented within the manual, the use of mineral oil and possible scenario of inhaling misting mineral oil, when considering placement of the freeze dryer. The only item mentioned within the user manual, something concerning placing the unit near a sleeping area without any explanation as to why. As such, why some or many opt for placing the freeze drier within the garage. Since I've already purchased expensive shelving for the kitchen, will likely have to follow through and pray the oil misting causes no problems, as us guys tend to sleep on the living room couch. According to the vacuum mineral oil SDS and health hazard category, should have likely mentioned this for older folks! Hopefully it's not as bad as running a 2-cycle chainsaw.

I understand your concerns. The SDS to consult would be the brand of oil you're using. If it's HR's oil, then it would be Robinair. SDS below: www.robinair.com/sites/default/files/documents/Vacuum%2520Pump%2520Oil%2520SDS%2520552184_0.pdf Section 4 has this statement: ...This material is not expected to cause inhalation-related disorders under anticipated conditions of use... Section 11 has this statement: Inhalation Avoid breathing vapors or mists. Section 2 states: This chemical does not meet the hazardous criteria set forth by the 2012 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR1910.1200). This means OSHA is not concerned with the use of this chemical in the workplace and long term employee exposure is not an issue. I don't think there's an issue unless you have COPD or other major health problems. Consult your doctor if you do. With all this said, I think you'll be just fine.

@@Philat4800feet Well, that is exactly what I concluded based on the information alone that the Harvest Right's vacuum oil (mineral oil) SDS claimed "Categary 5" health concern. (May have been one of the other generic mineral oil SDS sheets, cannot recall exactly.) Reading the footnotes on that section as specified within the section, seemed to indicate elderly or those with health concerns could possibly have a (breathing/sensitivity) problem. The reason why mineral oil falls into the Category 5 health concern, assuming from the foot notes, the product likely caused serious harm however was ruled-out from being within a higher category due to nonspecific other reasons. Had I known all this, I probably would have ordered/purchased the smaller unit, for significantly easier ability for moving/relocating as needed, as well as easier for placing upon a shelf! OSHA is work/occupational related safety related measures, similar EPA noise dBA/dBC scales, opinions/statements can likely be weighted towards the commercial sector, and/or vice versa. From what I know of OSHA, they tend to be far more strict. Reading further into the mineral oil SDS data/hazards, there are upper/lower limits mentioned. In my opinion, as I previously mentioned or joked, symptoms would likely be similar to using a chainsaw using 2-cycle gas/oil mixture, but having far less affect, as the chainsaw is burning the gas/oil, whereas the vacuum pump is slightly warming/heating the oil. Probably not a good idea for resting your head next to the vacuum pump while running, and I'm also thinking of placing a fan on the pump for slightly cooling the casing, without knowing the trade-off as now I'm pushing air over the pump filter condoning a slight negative air pressure around the filter. Shrugs... guess I'll find out if it stinks up my house soon though... This reminds me of the toy train smoke, but again, the toy train stuff is designed to smoke, whereas vacuum oil is far likely not designed to reach smoke point.

HR service is the worst I have ever dealt with. Three job tickets, on the same problem and they failed to respond all three times.

@@Philat4800feet I really need the wiring schematic for the module terminals on the back (Screen attaches). Two black wires off the vacuum switch connect to male spade connectors, there are six on the module. The small white plastic plug with fine wires from the vacuum switch plugs into a printed circuit board, the circuit board is numbered with four female plugs. Only one plug is needed. I need to know where they reconnect to. Here are the numbers of the machine. BOM. AL21012016 TS. SER# =117AL1TS-11406-TL. Can you direct me to this schematic by chance? No luck on the net. This all started with a vacuum leak in the pipe teen on the vacuum chamber. I put thread tape on the leak, but since I'm not sure where these wires go, the vacuum reading never changes, no matter where I put the wires. Thanks
