Just want to say that the “Felix Fix” cured my freeze dryer! I was not able to complete a batch due to vacuum failures. In an attempt to resolve it, HR had me recalibrate my vacuum sensor to -120 mTorr, and sent me a new premium pump. This fixed it temporarily but after a few batches I was getting consistent vacuum errors again. Then came the Felix fix. When I took the vacuum sensor off, I realized immediately that I found the failure. The thread tape used to seal the vacuum sensor never made it to the threads and was crammed against the sensor base. Three wraps of mega tape and I was down to -10 mTorr!!! 😂. With that, I recalibrated the vacuum sensor to +50 mTorr and ran a “empty” batch successfully (I couldn’t before the fix). Afterwards I ran a “meal” batch and this was also successful!! Thank you for taking the time to make the video. You saved my HR Freeze dryer!!

Great instructional video! Thank you. We went through the "inadequate vacuum", "adding more freeze time" loop back in Sept, 2022. After more than 40 emails back and forth to 2 different techs at HR, they admitted my pump was bad, and just barely still under warranty. I mailed it to them, it was repaired and I got it back Nov 24, 2022. I've been happily freeze drying since....until.... Yesterday. The loop started again. You and Felix are a Godsend to all HR customers with a vacuum leak. I just heard about the "Felix Fix". Unfortunately, we had to figure it out on our own. Lucky me, my husband is an electrician. Keep up the support.

@@mirandasalas1747 Mine was doing the: "more freeze time added" loop, repeatedly. An HR tech supervisor told me that's an indication the pump is going out. Yet, still put me through the "send your log files, and all the "watch this repair video", "watch that repair video", which of course was not the problem. It was my second oil free pump (which I had paid for) and was still under warranty. If your machine is still under warranty, Insist they take it back, no cost to you. If they drag their feet, tell them that you are contacting the BBB and the Utah AG.. that usually does the trick. It's maddening. I would NOT do the felix fix, it could invalidate your warranty.

Thank you for this video! I just received a new HR medium unit and it would not pull a vacuum below 500 mTorr. After the repairs, and a new vacuum line like you are selling, I am hitting 147 mTorr in under 20 minutes. And I used a product called Nylog Blue on the JIC fittings, just get a bottle, Amazon sells it... So, $300, and a week later, I finally have this brand new medium Harvest Right Freeze Dryer working as advertised! What a nightmare, for this much money, these units should work right out of the box, and there is no reason they should not, as there is literally nothing to these machines. Poor manufacturing, and cheap parts. I bet the packaging costs more than the entire machine. Even the sealer, it needed to be repaired too... Really disappointed in this company. Bottom line, if you are not mechanically inclined, or do not mind waiting weeks or months to have a new unit repaired or replaced, I would recommend Alpine Freeze Dried Foods.

After doing a couple runs after doing the Felix Fix, I have observed that my oil is now staying super crystal clear. My assumption is that although my pump could pull a good enough vacuum to work with a small leak the small amount of moist basement air being pulling in would cloud up my oil and I was having to change/filter it often. This might be another tattletale sign of having a minor vacuum, almost undetectable, leak is if you oil keeps gets cloudy. I always dry my chamber between runs.

Thanks for the video. It's not so scary now if I have to do this. Both my machines are older about 2017. Only one major problem with each of them. My major main problems I keep having is with the pumps. I've gone thru 6 standard pumps with the oil going black with crud in it and the pumps not working any more, and HR not fixing them. So last year I bought 2 premium pumps and now one of those pumps the oil went black with alot of crud in it. I flushed it cleaned it out of all the black oil and crud. So far it's still working but the oil is no longer clear. HR says it's the food I'm putting in it but then why isn't the other pump affected? I do the same food in both of them. I went to this video cause the comment was repairing your pump along with the felix fix. But no pump fix. If I could just find some one or a video to repair my standard pumps i have just lying around I could have a back up. Thanks for the video. You guys are awesomely.

the clear hoses being a problem, does that apply to the drain hose as well? Because the drain valve is free floating any time it gets tugged on is causing side torque of the fitting where it connects to the chamber. After doing the "Felix fix" i will be taping the drain hose to the support brace to prevent that from movement on the chamber fitting

Donald, I honestly thought I was the only person servicing the machine on the floor. How do you like the Ryobi soldering iron? I have a soldering station I use all the time but I need a good alternative for cordless soldering. I have tried a few different butane irons but they perform less than adequately if there is even a breeze where working. Any thoughts you have to share about it would be appreciated. I'd also be interested in more information about the reason/need for the thermistor bypass operation and what that may resolve. There is a bit of confusion (in my case) about this part. I have seen comments that lead me to believe the part is a thermal circuit breaker but I also see it being called a thermistor, which to me indicates it is a resistor that changes value based on temperature. Can you advise?

  • @freezedryerrepairsupport

    @freezedryerrepairsupport

    Жыл бұрын

The soldering tool I have is battery powered so I would try something like this. So Harvest Right calls it a thermistor. From what I was told there is a couple of sensors that will work together to get mTorrs readying correct. I do know this should help with the huge temp jumps people are seeing as well.

At some point of the vacuum i have noticed the ice rings begin to disappear so i turned the freeze function off. mTorr went up. 2.When i tried the same process only with vacuum without the freeze - i got only 439 mTorr and it took around 1.5 hours to reach that level. Doing refrigeration instead of leak loc blue goo on threads. Nylog blue is a great thread sealant and doesn't harden. Note on refrigerant level, that unit is a capillary tube system. It is a critically charged unit that has to be weighed in precisely. Depending on ambient outside temperature, evaporator temperature the charge expands and contracts. Frost line to compressor will probably show after it's getting close to evaporator proper freezing temp. It's easy to overcharge that type of system and it can still frost to the compressor but will not actually achieve the -30 temp required. Frost just means the copper is below 32 and humidity is freezing on it. Lot of good info 👌

I see a bunch of factory Teflon tape on that fitting. Is there a reason you don't remove that fitting, clean the factory tape off and re-tape it like you did the other parts? Wouldn't it be a potential source of vacuum leak too? Thanks!

I'm getting a problem where the temperature sensor of the tray is reading like 130-140F when the machine is just sitting idle. I fixed it once with hitting the reset button on the back, but that isn't working now. Does that little sensor go bad? What is the thermistor bypass doing?

Hi Donald. I have a problem with my vacuum readings which I hope you can help with. My mTorrs never get below 2700-2900. The vacuum gauge I installed gets down to about -29 inHg which should translate to about 700-750 mTorr. I have a large 8 tray pharmaceutical dryer, ver 5.1.25Pd. I tried the thing with 4 taps on the upper right corner, then the leaf, but didn't get the screen you showed on your 56 minute video. So I am running about 2000 mTorr too high. Sure would like to factor that out. I've done all the vac leak fixes. I know the problem is in the software. Yes, I know that my horizontal oil free pump is worn out but that is a second issue. btw: Do you sell pump rebuild kits?

I have close to $300 invested in parts and repairs to this built in August of 2023 unit. I did all of the work myself, and it now functions as it should have right out of the box. Even the sealer, it was unusable, and I had to fix that too by purchasing the correct 5mm heat strips. I just ordered a new sealer direct from Impak as I do not believe the HR sealer will last very long before burning out its weak transformer. Now, let us pray...

So they *shouldn't* refrigeration systems are completely closed loops and without a leak should never lose a charge, but thats in a perfect world with no leaks ;) Theres always been talk that many of the units develop extremely small, slow leaks from the evaporator (wrapped around the drum). Its fairly hard to diagnose and according to HR impossible to repair. Mine is certainly one of them, weve "core sampled" for lack of a better term lol around the drum by cutting small holes in the foam insulation than using a gas detector, with hits coming from a couple specific places on the drum that coincide (ahah) with thinner spots in the ice rings that form on the cold trap. Anyways, long story short, I foamed the holes back up and about once a year I let the pixie fairies huff on some r410a and weigh in a new proper charge. It maintains proper performance, and its like 6oz of 410a or something, its on the plate, so even the little 28oz bottles you can get will give you multiple fills, and thats that, you have to deplete the system, vacuum it, then weigh in the proper charge, no way around it. That said, one of these days, when I have a second machine, Im gunna tear this one down entirely to try to repair the evaporator

how is this for an idea to test or confirm a vacuum leak? Take a 'good' machine, go to the test screen and run the vacuum until it gets down to 200-300mT. Then focus the camera on the screen and turn off the vacuum. I would assume on a good machine we'd see the mT slowly rise if at all, were on a badly leaking machine it would rise quickly. Hi Don, I recently bought a Harvest Right machine, and after seeing your KZread videos I am now very concerned about keeping it. I bought it in March of this year 2023, and did not set it all the way up as I needed to get a rolling cart, which my father built. So, I recently got it in the house, upgraded the electrical wiring, ran the "bread test" and the machine over heated, would not complete the drying procedure, and had to turn it off. I contacted Harvest Right and after trying their "software upgrade" which didn't work, they are having me ship it back to them in Utah. After seeing your issues with the company, I do not feel confident that I want to keep it, as I am not a repairman, and do not want to keep replacing parts that are defective or inadequate to run this machine. What has been your latest feelings with them, since you were not being reimbursed for service rendered? Thank you, Beckie

WHAT? I don't feel qualified to tear a machine apart. I'm thinking, Harvest Right needs a Maytag-type Repairman. This is a major appliance, and customer repair should reflect that.

It’s always a little bit scary when you try something new. This video is good because it gives us a peak as to the “mystery” inside the box. Once you remove the screws and actually see what’s inside, it makes it easier to understand how the thing works. Donald and Felix do a great job helping us to be participants in this whole journey! ;-) Good luck!
