As an asian, it’s very frustrating how I work so hard in school - do assignments almost everyday, take rigorous classes, juggle clubs, leadership positions, volunteer, do after school stuff, sports, sleep so little, and all that is discredited because I’m asian and that’s how we’re expected to be

I'm sorry to hear that but affirmative action policies are designed to address historical and ongoing inequalities that have put certain groups of people, including African Americans and other underrepresented minorities, at a disadvantage. The goal of affirmative action is to create a more diverse and inclusive student body that reflects the demographics of society as a whole. It is important to note that admission decisions at top universities are not solely based on race or ethnicity. Admissions committees take into consideration a wide range of factors, including academic achievement, extracurricular activities, essays, letters of recommendation, and personal qualities. While having a strong academic record is certainly important, it is not the only criterion that is considered. Admissions rates at top universities have been decreasing in recent years. This is due in part to the increasing number of international applicants, particularly from India and East Asia, as well as the growing popularity of these universities among students worldwide, Harvard's admission rate was about 15% in 2003, now it's less than 5%. It is also worth noting that many applicants apply to multiple universities, regardless of their true interest in the programs offered, which further reduces acceptance rates. I recall watching a video of someone reacting to their admission results and saying "Brown doesn't even have my major but I applied incase I don't get into the any other Ivy". The goal of top universities is to select a diverse and talented group of students who will contribute to the intellectual and social life of the campus community. While affirmative action policies play a role in achieving this goal, they are just one factor among many that are considered in the admissions process.

Caltech is a great school and the amount of Asians enrolling there is around 44% because Caltech cares about merit. If Harvard and the other ivy League didn't discriminate against Asians, the enrollment would be around 40% instead of around 20% currently.

It’s actually 28% - that is not a low percentage when you take into account that Asian Americans only account for 5.6% of the population. Cal tech is higher but I wouldn’t be surprised if that has something to do with its engineering strengths and the popularity of computing science over law medicine generally. Also if Harvard or cal tech accepted only on academic merit they would have only valedictorians (and even then would end up rejecting some). That’s what happens when your acceptance rate is 4%. But that would pretty much suck for diversity, so Universities accept in a number of factors - considering how much benefit they get from minorities financial etc your probably more ahead in the stakes than you think. The reality is it’s all a scam. You get in on a bunch of criteria, race being just one - hell the fact that your not dirt poor can work against and for you depending on the year. Don’t make the uni you get into your personality.

I think many students try to rationalize rejection of their application from top school, because we tend to believe that there is some kind of rational formula behind admission process and that we can calculate our chance. However, it is not true, there is no solid rationale why some students are accepted while others are rejected.

I’m desi, so I’m not the same type of Asian you are. But I completely understand the frustration that ensues with working as hard as you can but still being denied a chance due to your heritage, something you have no control over. I really don’t understand why colleges limit acceptances for Asian applicants because we are some of the most hardworking and successful people out there, and no doubt contribute greatly to society. And you are absolutely right that you should never hide something that is integral to who you are and to your lived experience. If a college acts in such a sense, then they don’t deserve amazing people like you on their campus anyway. Encouraging diversity is great and all, but not at the expense of students solely due to their immutable traits. Interestingly, I know a family who actually spoke with a Harvard admissions consultant. They apparently said that if you are brown and want to go into premed, don’t even bother applying to Harvard because your chances are already exponentially low. I’m not sure if the same applies to East Asians, but all I know was that it was a tragically unsurprising attitude. Don’t lose faith in yourself though, you will have a fantastic time and shine at any college you choose to go to!!

Off-topic, but I hate that you have to specify “not the same type of Asian” because you don’t need to. Desis ARE Asians. I’m filipina, so although I am asian, people often think I’m spanish. This is something that I always hated as a child. It felt like I had to fight to be seen as who I was. Well, as soon as I got to high school and started applying for lab internships for research I got rejected because I was asian. My friends were brainstorming ways on how to appear less asian so they could get into programs and internships. Suddenly, my appearance and last name was something I could use to my advantage. But it still stung just as much. I’m not spanish, I’ve never been spanish. I was proud to be Filipina. But when being Asian put me at a disadvantage, I guess I just had to adapt to succeed.

but still, Ivy admissions are very subjective. I say this as an IITian in India who is considering applying for MS in US. We have a very tough objective type exam, and admissions are strictly based on its results. Of course this has its drawbacks, as it disincentivises high schoolers from working on research, and they instead just focus on rote learning and practice; But no one can argue with the fairness of this system. I think middle ground should be found.

I was watching a British show a few years back that was based in Oxford. The dean was telling two of the kids, “do you really think you’re special? Everyone here was the top of their class. You are just like everyone else, you are not special.” The AA action was kept in place to keep the Asian enrollment lower. It started to give Black Americans a chance for upward mobility. Asians were duped into thinking they were POC.

Ivy League kids achieve great accolades in their youth of whatever they are interested in. This often times comes in the form of of competitive arts which takes decades to groom. And this takes coaches and countless hours of private lessons discipline and mastery think of raising a young prince. This is the legacy lifestyle these schools expect. A royal type of upbringing and since you’re in a whole nother country you first had to survive then thrive there wasn’t enough time for your parents to learn the royal customs of another nation

Is the only reason I would get in affirmative action? I have all these people essentially telling me I’m worth less than an Asian no matter what. Why do y’all think you should automatically be accepted? Why do you think everybody else didn’t work hard? And why arent you more angered by all the rich, private school, trust fund baby legacies?

  • @LycheeCore

I’m so happy for you and congratulate your academic success, but it is important that we look at the general picture being that without affirmative action processes we would a much lower percentage of Hispanic/African American students accepted into high level universities. It is a fact that what college you attend can dictate your chances at economic mobility, and fact is that PoC are statistically more likely to live in lower economic conditions than white/Asians who have generally a higher economic condition due to decades of prior discrimination. I am glad to see you succeed, but it is important for universities to at least offer a proportional slots based on what percent of the population is what, it’s isn’t racism, it’s fixing decades of discrimination and hold backs that is caused by underfunded minority majority communities. I’m from souther Texas atm, a Majority Hispanic Community, but grew up in south Florida in a much wealthier county. I see the difference of how smart students are and what environments they come from and it is a fact that statistically students from higher income areas over preform students in low income usually majority-minority communities, with Affirmative Action we are giving good students in those areas who may not be able to reach the same number as those in higher end areas a chance to attend a better school and have higher upwards mobility. That doesn’t mean some Hispanic Kid with a 1.4 and all F’s will take the spot of a 4.4 GPA black person, much more that a 3.5 Hispanic with A/AB’s will have a better chance of attending a school where they can improve their standing

Great job embracing your culture.I'd say it's not your college that defines you, it's what you do that defines your college. You worked hard and if that's the case Harvard and Stanford should be ashamed.I do believe giving souch weightage to essays along with standardized tests is stupid though cause there's so much that defines you as a person even communication wise and that narrows the spectrum of deserving students that get in due to cultural differences as well.
