I would personally take this list with a grain of salt. Any EC can at the very least turn into a very good college essay. Do what ECs you enjoy and are actually good at and also consider how strong your school is in that EC. my hs doesn't even have a science fair, while our student government is very involved and teaches a lot.

Honestly some of these reasons kinda dumb. College level courses at a local community college are free. If I went back in time, I would of taken less APs and more dual enrollment at a cc. Save money and time, most courses transfer over lol. Like you can still spend summers doing internships/research and whatnot.

yes yes yes! for example, i agree that NHS is very basic on its own. But if you lead cool initiatives in it (such as volunteering, fundraisers, tutoring, etc), it can sound great on an application to a top college.

Not sure how accurate the Model UN bashing is here. I talked to some admissions officers at UChicago, and they said they like to see model un on an application, and 13% of Harvard students participated in the club

  • @wollypolly

    @wollypolly

    10 күн бұрын

model un is a pretty base club, thereby many students take it; this could explain the high amounts of students taking it and being accepted (i do not think it is one of the sole/major reasons kids get in)

I am quite disappointed that they put Model United Nations in the lowest category, I mean, you can practice public speaking, debating, and writing skills, meet new people, thus showcase those skills through 'Best Delegate', 'Outstanding Delegate' awards. I've gone to countless MUNs as a staff, a delegate, or a chair, and I think one of my highlights of hs was muns.

Nearly any EC can be great as long as you're invested in it and if it provides you with a transformative experience. I joined a small local activist group and that ballooned into working on a campaign with the ACLU. Your ECs will go as far as you are willing to take them.

I disagree with the Model UN placing. Yes its not the best EC out there and yes many parts of it might feel formulaic(Speeches and resolutions in particular are all super formula based), but it really practices your public speaking skills, which can be useful in many fields. I don't think its the best simply because it doesn't really do anything better than something like a debate or mock trial club but it still practices some very vital skills.

Yeah, president of my Debate Club here who recently killed Model UN (literally we got 80% of the members from MUN to switch to Debate), I think both clubs are kinda ehh as far as admissions go. I think I learned way more from starting that than I did any of my other clubs (and I honestly probably wouldn't have even had the interview skills to get my internship without it), but I think for raw admissions it's definitely not the best

Tbh the opportunity cost is gonna be pretty low, so it's better than doing nothing (realistically taking an online diff eqs class is like a couple hours per week of your time and maybe a couple hundred dollars). I think the big thing is that you should never give up other opportunities that are potentially better for that---don't forgo an internship or something so you can take a college class---but it can't hurt you

as much as this is a fun video, friendly reminder that this tier ranking is just that. they made it for fun & to provide some info. it's not meant to be the end all or be all of ecs and honestly i would say just do what you want. the more important thing is that you work hard & try to stand out at what you do!! and you're never going to want to do that if you don't love ur activities. so just do things that you feel truly passionate about & work as hard as you can trust that things will fall into place. doesn't mean that you can't be strategic about how you do things but make sure you're doing what you truly want

Honestly, with those clubs like Hosa, FBLA, FCC,LAA it depends on the school and the student. My hosta chapter. For example, we did nothing so we had no idea about the national competitions and stuff like that. But my FBLA chapter they go to state competition, national competitions and international competitions, so it just depends on the chapter and the person.

Are you talking about A Levels? If so, I don’t think these schools have grade requirements like in the UK but from what I’ve seen from accepted applicants is they tend to take 4 A Levels and I’m guessing roughly 2-4 A*s and the rest As. Predicted grades are really important for your transcript. Not sure about the written work (I’m still navigating the US system myself). If you are also from the UK I’d love to talk through the process with someone with similar background so I can share my IG if you’d like that :)

I’m not sure how colleges in the UK work, but the U.S. has a holistic admissions system where you submit and application with an essay and questions that you answered. They look at the extracurriculars, courses, awards, clubs, etc. that you wrote about. They also get your transcript with all your grades and classes throughout high school. Admissions officers use these factors (and sometimes and interview) to decide.

What do they mean by NHS? (sorry i'm not familiar with the US school system)

NHS stands for National Honor Society, an organization that acts as a club in many different schools, mainly promoting leadership, volunteering, and academic excellence. It’s usually limited to students with good grades and behavior in school.

so what i'm taking from the comment section is, any EC is good, if, you know how to play with your words.

Hi Pritik and Rishab, I am a rising junior who moved to the United States from Myanmar the summer before sophomore year, and could not take any AP classes until now. I will only have 3 APs by the time I apply to college, any tips on how to improve my course rigor? Love both your videos btw 👍

Not Pratik, but why can't you take more APs? Is that because of the school's policy or personal choice? If it's the school, that won't count against you

^^^ also if you really wanted you could self study APs (take the exam without doing an actual course)

I think if your school didn’t allow you to take AP classes until now colleges will look at that and understand why but if not I’d recommend going to a guidance counselor to maybe see if you can take harder classes such as honors or more Ap’s.

i feel like a lot of this was personal and not as much from an objective standpoint. band isn't just about the instrument, it's also about the qualities that are attached to dedicated musicians.
