Harsha Bhogle on India’s New Head Coach

Спорт

I believe India will be better off having a young white-ball coach and an experienced tactician for Test cricket. Hear my thoughts on the successor of Rahul Dravid for the national team.

I would really like to see someone from outside of India to be India's coach, it gives the 3rd person perspective of the game, which is very important given the fact that Indian players don't play club cricket outside of India. Overseas exposure is very important specially if India wants to win more WCs. Indian cricket living in its own bubble is the last thing anyone would like to see. Edit 1: People here comparing every foreign coach to Greg Chappelle. Remember the WC last year, everyone was so optimistic that every cricket expert in India would just hold non stop rants on how mighty our team is and not acknowledging the problems beneath the surface. Not having allrounders was always a problem. Even in finals, all hindi commentators in first Innings said how foolish Cummins was to take bowling first. But aussies had the last laugh. Australian experts clearly have the intellect that very few in India have. Learning from them will never harm us. And stop comparing every expert from Australia to Greg Chappell.

Coach's duty seems to have changed a lot from what it was 10-20 years ago. See how John wright, Gary kirsten or even Greg Chappel did. They could make tweaks to the batting order, do experiments, sometimes they would send bowlers at the top of batting order to utilize powerplays like how irfan pathan used to come at 3, or train batsmen to bowl 3-4 overs to disrupt concentration of opposition, reason why sehwag yuvraj and raina used to give those overs in the middle. Agreed the chappel era had its downside, but things like these helped captains as well, they could save overs of their best bowlers like Zaheer Khan when required, plus it kept the opposition on their toes guessing the next move as well as entertained the audience with surprises. It was good for the game, it helped find newer things like trying different batsmen for opening, middle overs etc. See how Narine opening for KKR has so much impact. Now-a-days coaching job has just become select the playing 11 and the 15, provide captain with these many spin options, that many fast bowling options, these many wicket keepers, fill team hoping for matchups and then leave everything to players and hope for the best. The game has become very predictable in that sense, the oppositions already know what we have planned and they have counter plans. Coaching has just remained a yes man job now, provide captain with the attack he wants and hope they deliver on the day, only now these players can't because opposition teams have studied, analyzed and developed a plan for every single one of them. You will believe me when you see the famous 2021 BGT, how Australia planned and executed the first test, but they had no plans for new players that came in the later matches in that series like Shubhman Gill, Pant, Siraj, Washington Sundar, Shardul, Natarajan, Saini. So no matter what coach we choose, the results are going to be the same for white ball cricket, since everything about Indian team is predictable at this point. When they select a world cup team, each expert can predict almost 8 players correctly of the 11, tells you how each opposition knows about every strength and weakness of our team.

Mr. Bhogle you have complicated the situation more than solving it. 🙂🙂 As I said, everone is thinking about coach coach and not talking anything about, who's going to be next captain. Are Indian selectors so sure about the next T20I skipper, considering after this tournament Rohit Sharma is going to announce his retirement from T20Is (most probably)? If Rohit will leave T20Is who's gonna be next skipper? What is the future of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja as a T20I players post WT20 2024? And most importantly what about the ODI's? What is the plan ahead for BCCI as far as ODI's are concerned? Do they want a single captain for both ODI's and T20Is or are they willing to bring change in their policy by having two separate captains in white ball format (ODIs and T20Is). And what about test matches? How long BCCI thinks that Rohit Sharma can play even in Tests considering his form and fitness?

I think IPL should not be used as a yardstick for selections - neither players nor coaches. Its a great platform to showcase India's achievements or prowess but domestic cricket should always be used as the baseline. This will be the number one differentiator from all other nations. Also, successful coaches in domestic cricket (min 2 years) should be given a road map to transition to International levels. I don't see any recently retired cricketers even focusing on domestic cricket. Its time we strengthen the feeder system in India. We are in a great place surely but important to lay foundation for a more sustainable future.

Considering the next 50 over world cup i believe that the stronger personalities like rohit, virat are probably not going to be there. In fact that going ahead is going to be the big problem, when does rohit sharma exit, whether virat can play the next 50 over world cup. Who ever the coach will be is going to have to make some tough decisions (which will not be very popular) and is probably going to lead with a relatively inexperienced captain (at the world stage). I agree that it has to be someone who has to understand the white ball cricket very well and considers all angles so we avoid the tactical mistakes made in the last world cup final.

Thank you for bringing this view forward Harsha. Don't think two coaches for india (one for tests and one for white ball cricket) has been suggested by anyone else yet. Interesting point you bring about coaches - could it be that the younger players get onto serious cricket now much earlier than the previous generations and hence do not get to complete their formal education (like a Kumble, Dravid etc). Could it be hampering their coaching pedigree..

GG will be an Aggressive coach and someone who can help us win big tournaments with the Right mindset but i agree if we have Rohit & Virat we need a calmer Coach else it will create camps in the team...GG should be introduced after Rohit & Virat leave T20 cricket until then its very difficult to win the T20 World cup and Sorry but this year too i don't see us winning. Hopefully they prove me wrong here but you need to take bold decision like in 2007 when Sachin, Rahul and all the senior guys were dropped to have MS Dhoni as the young Captain.

Tom Moody fits perfectly into that overseas coach discussion because of his experience with Sri Lanka (which is also a subcontinent team closer to India in terms of cricketing culture and passion) and the fact that he was involved in coaching an IPL franchise for so many years with a majority of Indian talent, both current and next gen. One other aspect that Harsha himself brought up in one of his interviews in KZread with Tom or Nasser Hussain was the split coaching system. A coach can only guide you to do things in a certain way but doesn't call the shots on the ground. So split coaching might be something that can be considered because India has grown leaps and bounds in terms of the style of test cricket they play in the past 10-15 years, but the lack of intent or a backup plan if there was a collapse in a crunch situation which has brought the downfall in all ICC ODI/T20 tournaments post 2013 is the aspect that needs to be fixed almost immediately if not instantly.

How did Dravid do excellent as coach? Even if this team didn’t had a coach it should have achieved what it achieved just by sheer talent they have in the team. The problem is India has great talent by far the best in world but not producing the results it should produce. India has been playing safe from the word go basically selection of team, when reaching knock out stages. There is a fear of losing vs expressing the skills the individuals and team possess. India had a great leader in Virat for Test matches and he changed the culture from 2014 to 2021 that’s what the results show. But when it comes to ODI and T20 India has performed very poorly on world stage and Dravid did nothing different to change it he kept the status quo running. I thought Ajit Agarkar might be bold in his selection he too played it safe. India needs to change like it did in 2007 big changes and new blood and playing with freedom with ready to take risks without the fear of failure. Harsha trying to describe what characteristics a coach should have be milder and all that is just old school and not focusing on what is actually needed for the team who cares a coach is milder or aggressive or introvert or extrovert everyone cares about what actions are you taking to win Trophies everything else is BS. Just look at Australia two plus decades the mindset is to win trophies and no fear of losing come what may, ready to take big gambles and sometimes it pays off sometimes doesn’t.
