I think it would be more appropriate to recreate a s story with one vision of everything and designs, so it would not look out of place (Like just watch how Hogwarts changed throughout the the og films, you definitely feel a disconnect with that). Plus, they could add few things that would hint of things that were never mentioned in the books, but later on known in the Pottermore articles, which would make a picture much more whole. But again, this is 50/50, so HBO series can be even less detailed than films are.

I've been working on JUST the background story, characters and cities of my fantasy novel for half a decade now, so hearing that it took Rowling ten years for all that kind of makes me hopeful that my story will one day be read and enjoyed even by a few hundred people. That would be my dream.

God I’ve been doing the same thing since I’m writing a sci fi fantasy world with three dimensions that entwined each other and there is a group of people who possessed psychic abilities, they are monotheistic people and are a matriarchal society (it means that it’s ruled by women).

They tried that with the dune series but it wasnt as good. Yet Brandon Sanderson did a good finish off the wheel of time. If Rowling wont do it herself I think he could

So that makes: 8 Gryffindors 9 Slytherins 11 Ravenclaws 7 Hufflepuffs That leaves 5 of them unsorted. Just wanted to do this because the distribution, house wise, of these 40 was a question I always had. Kind of interesting to see Ravenclaw is the one with the highest number of students, and Hufflepuff the lowest. But for all we know, the remaining five could be Hufflepuffs, as Helga Hufflepuff wanted "the rest" i.e. the ones that weren't favourable to the other 3 founders

Yes but Oliver woods, seems that jk later changed him to not to be in Harry’s year, so there’s actually 39, but I headcanon that “Moon” girl to be another character, sorted into Ravenclaw.

I am a mother of five and I have written three books... and am knee deep in another...and I can assure you, naming the characters is just as hard as naming your own child. It's personal and it's forever. Naming forty characters would have sent me over the edge!!!😬😆💖

Major Facts because you want the names to be meaningful to character and relate to the story as a Foreshadowing tactic.

I’m grateful how patient she was, remembering and choosing name is really difficult. Her 10 years paid off, a masterpiece was created.

I’ve read so much HP fan fiction that I knew all of the character names that weren’t in the actual HP books and actually forgot they weren’t used in the books. 😂

Yeah same here. I thought for sure Tracey was in the books and Daphne, Nott and Zabini used more than they were. Fanfiction have really made those four bigger than they were in canon

I did some diggin, Goldstein is a distant relative to Tina and Queenie, but he is also a distant relative to Luna Lovegood, who went on to marry someone from the scamander family.

Fun fact: in the Dutch translation of the first book during the sorting ceremony it said Bella Zabini, because the translator didn't know Blaise was a male character since apparently the name Blaise can be used for both girls and boys. The sixth book revealed Blaise to be male, so for the translation of that book the name changed to Benno, a boys name.

For the German version they didn't change the name for the frist book but gave Zabini a female pronoun.

It's sad what fanfic does to your brain- I am shocked beyond words that Daphne and Tracy don't play a bigger role in the books because they're all over fanfic 😂

Puckle Is a mischievous or evil spirit... well I can see why jk rowling changed her name. Puckle definitely is the opposite of Hermione. Movieflame do you agree with that or do you have a second opinion?

Originally, Hermione’s middle name was to be Jane, but Rowling decided later that Hermione should not share the same middle name as Umbridge, so it became Jean.

I only know that name from James Puckle the inventor of the Puckle gun.

I always admire how much effort great writers put into their work and J.K. Rowling is no exception. But you'd think with this much effort J.K. Rowling could give us fans some new Wizarding World stories that are better than the Cursed Child and the second and third Fantastic Beasts films. I'm still hoping for TV shows about the Hogwarts Founders, Lord Voldemort's origins, the Marauders, Harry's career as an Auror, and the other magical schools.

Okay, so J.K wasn't really responsible for the Cursed Child being HORRIBLE. Jack Throne and John Tiffany are just lazy writers. As for the fantastic beasts movies, for the first J.K had someone help her turn it from book to movie. If the fantastic beasts 2 and 3 were books they'd work really well.

The screenplays for Fantastic Beasts are almost novels in description of all stuff.

I hope the upcoming tv show will have all of these characters in the background. They might add them some lines, storylines maybe, or even nothing, but it would just be amazing to have the full cast for all 7 seasons

*disclaimer* In the sorting ceremony harry would be in his first year, meaning luna didnt start hogwarts yet, so the last name "Moon" couldnt have benn her.

What I love about Luna's name is that she's still Moon because Luna is Moon in spanish ❤ it may not be her last name but it got her a really cool and cute name ✨🌙

These scribblings are common for most writers. We tend to keep notes and many of what we originally plan or think about the novel ends up not making sense as the piece comes together as a whole and develops. Tolkein originally had Strider be an experienced hobbit who knew the woods well, then as he wrote he kept his essential character the same but changed his background to be Aragorn, the true king in rags, without a throne. It changes the entire tone of the story. One of the most fun and interesting things about being a writer is no matter how much you plan, you always seem to discover things you never expected while you are writing, if you allow yourself to. And having the instincts and trust in the story to allow it to grow and develop into something stronger is important.

I saw the documentary with the original notebook of the characters. I was planning to go back, pause the video and investigate the names, but you did it for me and much better. Thank you!

I guess since Draco is Latin for Dragon, I presume Spinks was meant to represent Sphinx.

After the characterscharacter’s name, there are some symbols, the first column might be gender, the third one is obviously their house. But I’m not so sure about the second one. My theory is that they are blood status.

To backup my theory, some pure blood characters have star with circle around, some half blood characters only have the star, and some characters that born from Non-magical family have the letter N. My theory can also be wrong since some does not work by the rule but characters can also be changed by JKR in the writing process so who know.

@@lightofwisdom17 I think you are right with your theory. Hermonie looks like a square with an N, Justin Finch-Fletchley also as a square with an N. And all the Slytherin I see have a circle with a star. Of course some characters changed, but I think your spot on with your theory.

Interestingly enough, there was actually a Hufflepuff called Kevin in the books (specifically, Goblet of Fire). His name, however, was Kevin Whitby not Kevin Entwhistle

This was a really interesting Deep Dive into the original 40. I'm working on some novels myself. I've already done alot on the worldbuilding, the background of my main character, and several side character backgrounds that I want to Implement as well.

I think Quirrell has the potential to have an interesting story of them struggling to get by with the knowledge of their father being tide to Lord Voldemort.

I'm writing a comment because you asked me to. I'm a 72 year old woman from rural central NY. When the first Harry Potter books were written I dismissed them as children's books. Then I saw the first 2 movies and liked them but I knew I'd never read the books because of the amount of details in the books. But of course I realized eventually that all that detail is very important to understanding the story. The more I watched the more questions I had. I really became a fan after experiencing Harry Potter at Universal. That's where you come in! I can't tell you how much your videos have helped me to connect all those complicated dots. This video has opened so many new perspectives! There is a play, Puffs, which is based on Harry Potter but not affiliated. And the main trio of characters (all hufflepuffs) are named Wayne Hopkins, Megan Jones, and Oliver Rivers. And there’s another character named Sally Perks. I truly wonder if this is somehow where their inspiration is from

I played Snape! [and some others]. I doubt the computerised version of the list wasn't available back when the play was written, which means Matt & his wife must have looked at that blurry footage of Rowling's notebook and named their three main characters after that!

There were stars next to a lot of the original 40, as you can clearly see at 2:30. As far as I know, the stars didn't represent the religion of the characters but their blood purity. I don't know if Anthony Goldstein was always meant to be Jewish, but the star isn't any proof.

Names like Wayne Hopkins and Megan Jones were actually used in the Spoof Harry Potter play called Puffs! So in a way these characters were brought to life

Some interesting coidences: Queenie Goldstein and Tina Goldstein, and then we have an Anthony Goldstein Hepzibah (idk how to spell her name, the one Who Tom Riddle manipulated to get Slytherin's locket and Hufflepuff's cup) Smith, and Zacharias Smith (The annoying hufflepuff), and then we have a Sally Smith Since they are technically Cannon, are they related? (I think the Smith thing is more likely tho)

J.K confirmed on a tweet that Anthony Goldstein is a distant relative of Tina and Queenie. As for the Smith characters, there’s no confirmation of they being related, but I personally think that it’s very likely that they are, given the fact that the Wizarding population is way smaller than the Muggle population, so if two or more wizards share the same surname, it’s almost certain that they are related, especially if they are geographically close.

If JK were smart she would let some authors take a stab at the Potter-verse like it's done for the Star Wars books. Hell, I'm not sure if anyone here has ever heard or Norman G. Lipperts but he's a fan who made an entire work of fan fiction (like 5 or 6 books) of James Potter. The man had a whole site dedicated to the Potter-verse called Elder Crossing I think. James Potter & The Hall Of Elders Crossing was a fantastic work of art even if it was fanfiction. She could have sanctioned that to be cannon to the rest of her work buy she chose not to. It sucks because the expansion of the Potter-verse could be epic with her blessing. But maybe she's got some kinda Tolkien-esque thing going on that we don't know about and she's bidding her time before unleashing it on us.

I know that sounds silly and self-explanatory, it’s like asking if water is wet or does fire burn lol But since we know the famous goblin-made silver sword can destroy resilient magical artifacts like Horcruxes due to the basilisk venom it was imbued with, could getting a simple cut in combat or accidentally poking the tip or slicing a finger on the blade to admire how sharp it is kill a human in a minute like normal basilisk venom would?
