So about quidditch: each goal with the bigger red ball equals 10 points. The golden snitch equals 150 points AND ends the game. If the team is losing by more than 150 points, the seeker can’t catch the snitch even if he sees it. In the professional realm, one game can go for days.

Well, the Seeker can still catch the Snitch if they're over 150 points behind, but it won't win them the game. It just makes the loss not as bad. It does happen occasionally.

There are seven books (eight movies) and each one is a full year. The movies came out a year apart so the aging of the characters is natural. This book/movie is like in intro to the wizarding world and the main characters. The story matures and grows darker each year, and they are an emotional rollercoaster. You will love them!

The snitch ends the game and adds 150 points. So the team that catches it usually wins. But if your team catches the snitch when you're down by 160 or more points, you end the game and gain 150 points, so you still lose by at least 10 points. In that scenario the seeker has to stall and prevent the other seeker from catching the snitch without trying to catch it himself, until his teammates can reduce the point difference by scoring.

I didn't even know about Harry Potter when this film came out. I remember hanging out with some friends and one of them mentioned Harry Potter and I said I had no idea who that was, and she was "outraged" and insisted I borrow her DVDs -- at that time 5 of the 7 books were published, and only 2 films were out. By the time I finished watching the first DVD, I was totally in. And I ended up going out and buying all the books. So I saw the first 2 films before reading the books, and then all the other films I saw as they came out in the theatre, after reading the books. I love the first film. I had to laugh when Joe said he would try not to use the word "magical" to describe anything, because honestly that's how I feel about this film. It transported me to a world of imagination and magic and wonder. It made me want to go to Hogwarts (lol). It's just so charming and sweet and clever and I love the three lead kids. They're adorable at this age. Looking forward to seeing what you think of the films as they progress!

Everyone always seems to think Ron does not have to be on the Knight, but he does. Harry and Hermoine took empty squares, but Ron took the square with the Knight. Harry and Hermoine could not move until the game was over, neither could Ron, by taking himself off the Knight it would be the same as Harry or Hermoine walking away from their square before the game was completed.

They plan on spending one season per year and hopefully also going before and after the original books. J. K. I am impressed by your reaction. Thank you! Unlike many other adult reviewers, you are treating this movie with respect, and you really know what you are talking about. You even recognized some of the British actors. I had read the books when they were released, and I often asked myself how they would be able to film the difficult and magical scenes. When the first movie was released, I was in awe. It was brilliantly made. Of course, no movie could ever match my imagination, but it was marvellous. As the HP story progresses, it also gets more complicated. Don`t underestimate the information in the first movies, just because they seem to have been written for kids. The worldbuilding is necessary to understand later events. Taking some notes of the names of places, spells, objects, and people is recomandable. I am looking forward to going on the Harry Potter journey with you.👍

They could have done well if they weren't so poorly plotted and cast compared to the original series. The problem with the Fantastic Beast series was that they went for spectacular special effects rather than tight storytelling. The CGI tried to substitute for the story. It turned into a big, spectacular chaotic mess. Make it a good story, the fans would come back.

  • @fuzzzone

    @fuzzzone

@@llanitedave The whole Fantastic Beasts series is abysmally plotted, which I think is saying a lot when you consider how many plot holes exist in the Harry Potter series. Tight writing was never Rowling's strong suit, but FB was just hot garbage. As for whether or not fans would come back, I suppose that's an open question, JKR has burned a lot of bridges.

Just discovered your channel and you guys are a breath of fresh air! I appreciate the knowledge and great commentary while also respecting that this is was a kids franchise and not knocking it for how "childish" it starts as. I read the books and watched these movies religiously growing up so I'm nostalgia biased, but I really do think the fact that this series follows the characters through childhood and adolescence into adulthood, makes it the perfect family comfort series. Some things: You asked, "Why not just kick out all the Slytherins?" and it's not really a case of "if you're a Slytherin you're bad" as it is "A lot of people who are bad happened to also be in Slytherin". Can't really get rid of an entire House of kids just because they MIGHT be bad lol All 4 Hogwarts Houses have different value sets and none are particularly inclined for evil. Gryffindor is bravery and chivalry, Hufflepuff is hard work and loyalty, Ravenclaw is intelligence and wit, and Slytherin is cunning and ambition. Also, each movie covers a school year so summer usually takes place between films. And the movies came out MOSTLY on a year or so basis. The child actors matched their characters ages in the first couple movies, but by the end they were probably 3-4 years older than the characters, but it doesn't really matter by then because it still feels natural. It's basically a right of passage to do the official Pottermore Sorting Hat quiz and find out which House you belong too! So I hope you guys do that before the next movie or at some point, it's part of the fun. I am very much against JK Rowling's beliefs so as a major Harry Potter fan it's tough sometimes to revisit the series, but regardless it's an awesome franchise (books and movies) so it is what it is. Danielle Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint very much ARE these characters as well and they do such a good job at immersing you as the sets and costumes and filming do. Can't WAIT for the 2nd movie!

I've never been a big reader, but I picked up the first book when I was 32 when the paperback version came out because I kept hearing about how amazing the story was. I was instantly enthralled because the writing is just so clever. I hope you'll take the time to read the series and learn more of the underlying story that had to be cut for time. The movie adaptations are fairly true to the books but leave out some of the background that helps describe the reasons for Harry's situation. Each book/movie is fresh because new magical spells and objects are introduced, it's incredibly well done yet simple.

Something of note that I think you guys did pick up on but which I often see reactors miss/not carry with them to future movies. The reason Ron's mirror desire has him as quidditch captain, head boy, etc. has to do with his really deep feelings of insecurity/inadequacy both due to his lower class family as well as his position in his family. The Weasleys have 7 children- the oldest son was Head boy and works as a curse breaker (basically breaking curses at ancient sites to be able to bring gold back to the wizarding bank, so kind of a version of an archaeologist); the next son is really cool and works with dragons in Romania; then you have Percy, who had fantastic grades and was both Prefect and head boy; the twins, who may not apply themselves in school as much but are still quite smart in the areas they choose to apply themselves and who are very popular throughout the school; and finally you have the youngest Ginny who is the only girl. And between the twins and Ginny is Ron, who often feels overshadowed by his siblings and overlooked/unsure of himself, along with feeling immense insecurity about his lack of wealth. And this really plays a big role in his motivations as well as his character flaws throughout the books and movies.

In his defense, Gryffindor absolutely deserved to win first year. They all earned the points they got. BUT I agree, he could have added them in private as soon as all kids were conscious, rather than publicly humiliating Slytherin with this dramatic, “gotcha / psych!” announcement. Though I guess he wanted to confirm the rumors in front of everyone? Still could’ve done that without publicly adding up the points in front of everyone….

@@lexiburrows8127 true, but it’s like the one misaligned detail in the books. It’s literally never mentioned again. **** IF ANYONE ELSE IS READING THIS - SPOILER WARNING FOR BELOW CONTENT **** So much so that in The Order of The Phoenix, Sirius and Lupin explain how Lupin was made Prefect because Sirius and James spent too much time in detention to be considered for the post. Now, one could argue about how it’s eluded to that James matured a lot during his time at school, most credit given to how good an influence dating Lily was to him. She never cared for him when he was at his worst, and they didn’t start dating until seventh year after “his head deflated” and he “stopped hexing people for the fun of it.” Literally the only reason he was still at odds with Snape was because Snape never backed off, never missed a chance to curse James, and was basically a Death Eater by then. Because James and his friends in honesty were not bullies, they were the Fred and George of their time. Their worst behavior was reserved for the wannabe Death Eater gang at school in Slytherin house. So, after typing all that out, either (A) Rowling forgot she made Lily & James head boy & head girl since it’s literally never mentioned again, or (B) It’s a sign that James had truly matured enough by his last year to qualify for the job. ….And Snape is not the innocent bully’s victim that they portrayed in the movies, James and Snape reserved their worst behavior for each other alone. So I don’t think that qualifies him to be a bully as the treatment was mutual, even if James sucked sometimes as a 15 year old boy.

I love the original James Bond movies too !! What a shame that they clogged up the culture with just one piece of media, there’s a rich diversity to all art, Harry Potter certainly has its territory but these movies and stories would simply not EXIST without previous inspirations ❤

"Why don't they just expel those kids ..." that is, the Slytherins. Well, you've already identified one of the enduring mysteries of the Harry Potter universe -- the rather astonishing mix of determinism (the idea that some people are just born and raised evil, including in their education system), and a kind of shrugging off of evil, as if it's just a thing that exists naturally. It's hard to say whether this is an awful endorsement of moral and political apathy, or an admirable recognition that evil is a part of human nature and society that has to be faced but lived with -- not heavily policed or eradicated. Or, was it just a simplistic aspect of a simplistic YA novel's world-building that doesn't stand up to sophisticated scrutiny?

I think JKR thought it would be cool to have a group that might be more likely to turn bad but then kind of forgot that it’s still supposed to be a normal group of kids and wrote sentences like "every bad wizard was a Slytherin" (yet there’s the whole Sirius Black story) 🤣 Harry Potter is such a rollercoaster of very detailed clever concepts and very obvious plot and logistic holes

From the movies, I don’t remember the idea of people being BORN evil? There’s a difference between being “raised” evil and BORN evil. One is changeable and the other isn’t. Was there anything to suggest it WASN’T cultural? Down the line, there some magical elements are revealed to play a role in how a wizard might be born - but that’s on an individual basis, not a whole group. There are other issues that suggest determinism based on species or I guess magical genetics lol. But I don’t remember anything suggesting the idea that wizarding racism is anything other than cultural. Which means the wizarding world just incorporates a huge chonk of raging wizard bigots into their system.

@@NoelleMar You make a good point about "born evil" maybe not being a thing. I'm not wedded to that specifically being part of the determinism. But I can't help thinking about the Sorting Hat, While even it is more nuanced in its judgment than it appears on the surface, (leaning towards assigning Harry to Slytherin), people do seem to assume that it knows what you are inherently. They buy into the idea that certain people are just certain ways, and that includes evil -- which in the films includes being physically ugly and just comically mean, in case the point of there being definite "types" isn't driven home hard enough.

Because Slytherin's trait is not being evil, it's cunning and ambition. The movies just were more extreme for the dramatisism of it. And because every known evil wizard has come from Slytherin doesn't equal every Slytherin being evil. ✌🏼

The movies are great as a franchise, but they (other than maybe 1 and 2, and even those I’d argue miss the mark massively on characterisation) are terrible adaptations.

My love for the trans people in my life os far greater than any love i once had for the series. JKR has said that she uses the money she makes from the series to fund anti-trans organizations, and anti-trans bills in england have used her as an example. In the end, they're just stories, and not particularly well-written ones, full of casual racism (goblin bankers? Kingsley shacklebolt? Cho chang?). Im not willing to engage with a property that actively endangers real people just because i have nostalgia.
